Some time in the 1980s, I found a couple of books from the We Were There series in our local library. These books were old enough already that they were difficult to find even at that time, but I loved them. I have always really liked historical fiction that helped me to feel like I was on the spot when things happened long ago. I have found just a few reprints of these books for our library, and read a couple of them this week. This one seemed to tell the story of the Lewis & Clark Expedition pretty accurately, although I can’t remember if a boy by the name of Tom was along—he may have been invented for the story. This book is good for a quick introduction/overview of the expedition.
I read every single one of these as a child, time and time again; as an adult I have sought them out as treasured mementoes of my childhood. These books, the adventures and places they took me and the history I learned from them; they WERE my childhood!
They can be hard to find, but THANK GOD publishers are beginning to re-publish many editions from the series and believe you me I am buying them in book form AND on my Kindle.
If you have children or nieces and nephews, BY every book in this series and give the gift of adventure, education and appreciation of literature!
My rating is based on a nostalgic 1963 (3rd grade) love for this book and the series it was a part of. I had a wonderful third grade teacher and I read quite a few of the "We Were There .... " books. However, the characters in these books would most likely not be embraced by today's youth. For that reason, a rating of * or ** is probably more appropriate.
