[Series Review] Okay, first: EWW. Photos of eensy micro-organisms magnified zillions of times reeeeeallly creep me out. Especially when they, apparently, inhabit my body. EWW.
Now. Microscopic life forms, both harmful and helpful, are described in this Rookie Reader series from Scholastic. Cells, bacteria, viruses, fungi, protists, and more are introduced via brief, large-type text and color photographs. A “words you know” spread--a sort of picture glossary--and an index appear at the end. Although the uninteresting cover photos do little to attract readers, the titles offer a limited but solid introduction to microscopic life for early elementary students. Classroom teachers may find them useful additions for units on hygiene, plants, and health.
