The Slave Master's Son

Rate this book
The 1800s for Black Americans was a time of forced servitude, anguish, heartbreak, and strength of faith. John, a wealthy Richmond, Virginia slave owner’s son, and Hannah, the Negro daughter of a protective and loving mother, grew up as playmates, sharing their lives and dreams. Soon a sweet and tumultuous love affair began that grew so strong John would risk everything before relinquishing it. With his reputation in jeopardy, Hannah in his heart, and a father and country firmly against him, John must overcome obstacle after obstacle, some involving incredible violence and cruelty. Along the way he discovers shocking family secrets, buried for years. This historic romance raises the question – Can the love between a beautiful, young slave woman and a wealthy, Confederate slave master’s son endure the prevailing ideology of their time?

Forbidden love and redemption

Another great story by Ms. Laveen! She always takes us into the heart of her characters by the end of the story you feel as though you know these characters inside and out. As usual I was sorry to get to the end of the story. As the reader I'm so invested in the story and feelings of each character of course I don't wanted to end. We learned that when you truly love someone you're willing to endure quite a bit in order to be with that person. Even if it means that love according to the laws of the land is illegal you're willing to break the law to be with that person. The story also had an element of redemption. A selfish father found redemption at the end of his life. And those that he wrong in the past found forgiveness. Like I mentioned before I'm sorry The story came to an end but it was a good end. I totally recommend this book to you.

I Need A Sequel!!

Interesting story, but I feel like there is more to it... I really need a sequel for closure. I want to know if Mary, Jonah and Sarah were able to tell Master Stewart how they felt to be abandon. Did Hannah and John jr. have more children? There are so many questions I need answers to, but I still enjoyed the story immensely.

This story was heartfelt from the start. Hannah and John knew they belonged together since they were kids but their love was absolutely forbidden. I was surprised how John immediately fought for Hannah even though she was a slave. He even refused to let anyone bad mouth her and he never downplayed his feelings for her at any time. Their secret moments were so sweet and their struggle was so heartwarming. There were a lot of gut-wrenching moments that made me love this story so much. This is a book I could re-read and the subject matter is something that I will definitely read more of. Awesome book.

Obviously this story is a bit problematic considering the whole slave/ master relationship. However, I let go of that as the story went on. This story is extremely drawn out. Once once plot line ends another pops up and the story continues. It gets a bit ridiculous. So it's not terrible, but it's not a great love story either.

I am rating this book on the good side of 3 stars. technically its a 3.5. This is one of Tiana's earlier works. I remember seeing this book a few years ago and she spoke about her research on writing the book.

Honestly, I am not sure how to really feel about this book. For many slaves, slavery was very harsh but then I learned that some slave owners had made sure that their slaves were clothed and fed and treated them with the some dignity. After all, these humans had to work hard for them and they couldn't just die. It was expensive. Every white person in this book, seem to have some sort of decent treatment towards black people. I guess every slave romance novel is filled with the "horrors" of the past but this book was an interesting tale to say the least. John and Hannah grow up as best friend oblivious to their stations in a life. The relationship turns more serious as the two get older, igniting a love affair that was forbidden.

Honestly, the story got better once John and Hannah moved. By the time this happened, the book was halfway over. I think I would have liked the majority of this book to be about John, Hannah, and the family while living in New York. So you know I was upset the way the book ended. Since the story was published a while back, I guess I can get rid of the hope that the family's story has continued. This is why I gave it only 3.5 stars.

Of course I will continue to read Tiana's work.

Wow!

This woman knows how to weave a tale!!

My word....the beautiful way a childhood friendship (unseemly at that time) developed into a love that defied their times.

Hannah, strong yet so innocent....she had a fierce sense of a person's true character but she let you believe otherwise. I feel John, although white and free, was sheltered by his father that he was somewhat more innocent that Hannah.

I loved John's quiet strength though; the way he corrected that shady doctor was poetic but Hannah... she went full on mama bear against Gayle! Loved it so much....that was a powerful scene!

Thanks for the recommendation, Lair!!

I enjoyed this book I love this author , the things that happened in this book were tragic and full of love. I always have a hard time when I read a book about slavery but I really like the fact that this book is about love. Hannah and John were in love even when they are not supposed to be and that love endured in this book. I wish to read more about John's sister's and brother one more book please Tiana Laveen.

I really enjoyed this book. Yes I have read many books about slavery, but this one captured my heart. I admired John's character. He was willing to lose everything for love. Unlike his father, John didn't care about upholding an image. I also liked the character of Hannah. Even though, she was a slave she was feisty, talented, could read and write, and sing. John Sr. tried everything in his power to keep John Jr. and Hannah apart even though he was in love with a slave him self. Thank you Tiana for such a powerful story!

Surprisingly good. It is a very unconventional love story that makes me think of Georgie's Beau another book like this that I like. It presented factual parts of slavery like how black and white children were often raised and nursed together etc. and put a unique slant on the rest of the secret free blacks and former slaves and white owners/former owner relationships. I enjoyed how both sides of slavery and this romance were written. I do not want to give to much of the plot away but it started out a bit slow and jumbled but I am glad I stayed with it because it was quite a sweet romance.

A True Love Story!!

I loved this book. It's a true testament that love conquers all. John was able to build a life with Hannah & not fall into the same mistakes that his father made. There are no color barriers with Love!!

I did not expect to love this story as much as I did. Went in thinking it would be a classic trashy harlequin romance and it was not that at all. The love between John and Hannah is absolutely beautiful and pure and made my heart flutter- highly recommend it.

The Slave Master's Son

I did not think I would read thus book because if the title, I have had it a couple if years! But the author who wrote thus book I also knew it was going to be a "Best Seller"! The couple was so rich and in live, their live defied all reason! While reading you can almost place yourself in the story and time! Hannah was a remarkable young lady and never wavered for her lover and partner! This book only even now love can come out on top! A great read between the two is truly a love story! John was different, this dark man proved his love for Hannah! THE power of money can become one of love!

A Remarkable Historical Read

I did not know what to expect when I began reading this book. Especially, since this is my first experience of reading a book by this author. From the beginning page in chapter one to the last page in chapter 26, I was sold on this story. Tiana Laveen, shows that love does not have color or status attached to it. As I read The Slaves Master's Son, I connected with the characters and was consumed by their experiences. This story was thoroughly told and very well written. This is a phenomenal read that will not disappoint.

Heart wrenchingly beautiful
Damn this book was just simply beautiful. I was about to turn another page before I realize that it was the end. I really didn’t want this story to end. Despite the time period where blacks and whites weren't allowed to love each other freely, John and Hannah never let that stop them from expressing their love for each other. I’m happy that John fought for what he wanted even when the odds were against them. Their love story was simply ahead of its time. I do hope Jonah, Mary and Sarah got the closure as well as new beginning they seek.

Nicely Done

Overall, this book was a nice and semi-thrilling read at times. I really enjoyed Hannah and John’s relationship. I especially loved how John was a changing (white) man of his time. He did the right thing for Hannah. Lastly, I thought the ending was a little bit of a cliffhanger, but I can kinda guess what was going to happen.

I feel a bit torn with this book. I feel the narrative could have been better, but it also tackle a subject that’s hard to tackle. I’m not sure it did it in the best way. I think the relationship between Mary and the protagonist father, the slave master, never really was resolved. I never felt that daddy dearest actually regretted all he did, and he still got redemption.

Interesting story. Not what I expected. A story which starts near the end of slavery and follows the story of the slave masters son and his love/hate relationship with his father. Tiana writes in such a way that you wonder if her story’s were based on truth but this is something we’ll never know

I have no idea why I insisted to finish this book considering the amount of periods I took while reading… the romance was lacklustre and I was so so bored especially after they reunited (which happened in the 50 percent mark)I couldn’t care less about the plot..

Beautiful love story

Having more than my fair share of historical romance from author Beverly Jenkins.... I jumped at the opportunity to find more authors willing to take on the particular genre and subject matter... They were times I loved John and other times I was disappointed in him... I felt like he should have fought harder and made his own his decisions early on with regards to that sham of a marriage .... But he more than made up for it... Your heart hurts and breaks for Hannah and her mom Mary when other details about their lives are revealed.... The chemistry and live between John Hannah was a beautiful thing to watch they had to face adversity and ignorance both strangers and family.... I probably would have beat up on Gayle a little more for what she did .... It was nice to see Master John slowly change his ways and he's forced to deal with them demons that he allowed to roam freely in his heart .... The author does a great job of weaving together a beautiful love story but doesn't shy away from the harshness and cruelty of slavery .... Wish more authors were willing to tell more stories like this.... Another great job by T Laveen!!!

Long winded and inconsistent.

Started out interesting; however, it got a bit inconsistent and tedious. The growth of Hannah was inconsistent in that she was unable to appreciate her husband taking care of problem of finding her son in a time that a person of color would be killed or lynched or having their marriage invalidated. The character behaved as though that aspect of life was beyond her understanding? Really? The author tends to get preach, even if what is being said is legitimate, makes the reading tedious and boring. The author has to find a way to break up the soliloquy and keep the reader engaged. This story needs much work.
