Most Eligible Bachelor

Rate this book
Magazine columnist Chantelle Sah doesn’t celebrate Valentine’s Day—not since her fiancé’s betrayal three years ago. After botching her first assignment as a feature writer, she’s more than willing to put in a hard day’s work this Valentine’s Day; even if it means going on a date with gorgeous construction Tycoon, Lord McKenzie, and opening herself to an onslaught of all things love.

When Lord—his given name, not a title—sets his sights on Chantelle, it isn’t just work he has on his mind. But even he couldn’t have predicted the magnetic attraction between them when they meet, nor the evening ending with more than an interview. Now he has to convince Chantelle that their one-night stand wasn’t a mistake. Can he win her love without revealing a secret from their night of passion, which could prove fatal for both their hearts?

Empi Baryeh is the award-winning author of Most Eligible Bachelor (Book of the year - 2017 Ufere Awards). She writes sweet and sensual African, multicultural and interracial romance, which happens to be her favourite genres of romance to read. Her interest in writing started around the age of thirteen after she stumbled upon a YA story her sister had started and abandoned. The story fascinated her so much that, when she discovered it was unfinished, she knew she had to complete it. Somehow the rest of the story began to take shape in her mind and she's been writing ever since. She lives in Accra, Ghana, with her husband and their two lovely kids.

When I first noticed the book I totally sighed because I’ve seen this plot a hundred times. I took a chance though for the simple fact that it takes place in Africa and that really intrigued me. However, while I really did enjoy the book there is a lot of typical plot. Sadly, it did lack originality until you get to the characters. Don’t get me wrong you have the typical egotistical, handsome, leading man and well Chantelle is every bit the typical jaded female but the chemistry and vulnerability given to these two characters pulled everything together. Through the journey of the book you start to think of these two as people you can relate to and would have a kinship with in real life.

I read the initial version of this book when it first came out years ago. I’m happy to say that it was as interesting to read the second time, this time with a few additions. I loved the touches of Ghana that Ms. Baryeh added to the story to give it an authentic feel. My favorite aspect of the book was the scorching heat between Lord and Chantelle.

Just like when I read the book the first time, Lord is still one of my favorite book boyfriends, too bad I have to give him up to Chantelle because they belong together. I’m looking forward to the stories of the other Men of Distinction.

Lovely sweet love story with a satisfying ending. My only peeve is that the location of the story is ambiguous. I wanted to see more of the Ghanaian culture to make the story richer. The writer didn't show this in detail. In fact, I was surprised when I eventually discovered the story was set in Africa. Would have been 5 starts is a little of the African culture was demonstrated

Most Eligible Bachelor is one of the most enjoyable books I have read in a while. Set in Ghana, the story of Chantelle and Lord is most engaging; from their first encounter in the nightclub and throughout their various interactions in the book. The love scene (in the same nightclub and YES at their first encounter, lol) was hot enough for the storyline and the chemistry between the two characters flowed wonderfully throughout the novel. Empi's style of writing is unfussy and she captures your attention from the get go.

For a debut novel, Empi Baryeh hit the groung running and succeeded in weaving a wonderful love story between two very strong characters, which made for a quite enjoyable read.

It is quite refreshing to read a romance novel based on African characters and based in an African setting as opposed to the usual mills and boon characters.

This will definitely not be the last from this writer!!

While I really did enjoy the book there is a lot of typical plot. Sadly, it did lack originality until you get to the characters. I really wish the author had taken a little more time on the details. The plot could have been slowed down and a lot more been put into the fact that this book is placed in Africa and not just any Africa but a thriving Africa. We so rarely see this that it would have added flavor to the book to have expanded on it. All together though this was an enjoyable chocolate read that’s recommended to those with a sweet tooth.

This was a beautiful story. I loved how Lord has always gotten the woman he wanted until the only woman he wanted didn't want him. Chantelle had been hurt badly by her ex. She was deceived in the worst way. And when it seems Lord deceives her as well, she runs. I loved this story and how it took both of them to work through everything.

Good Book

I really enjoyed reading this book about Lord and Chantelle love journey. Lord called Chantelle out when he told her that she was one of those women who had been hurt before and was afraid to love again for fear of having her heart broken again. Chantelle's ex-fiance Martin died while cheating on her and the pain from the betrayal caused her to miscarry. I like how Lord actually dated Chantelle without sleeping with her again to show her that she was different from the women that he dated in the past. I'm glad that even though they had a major argument that they worked though it and made their way to the alter. I hope to find out if she's having twins and what they had in the upcoming books. I can't wait to read about (Don)Adonis Aggrey-Finn, Alpha Mensah-Woode, and (JQ)Jackson Quaye.

Eh, in the minority here because it was boring and I had to DNF. I felt like the relationship was moving way too quickly. I stopped reading it when Chantelle went to meet Lord's family 30% of the way through. She knew the family five freaking minutes, but the whole family loved her and thought she was awesome already. And when one of his nieces called her "auntie" and asked if they were going to get married during this first meeting (when Lord and Chantelle had only known each other two weeks), I had to stop reading because I was rolling my eyes too hard.

Note: I won an e-copy of this book from the author. Honest thoughts follow.

Starts out nicely enough but goes into a kind of coma soon after. Sure, the interview setup isn't a favorite, but there've been times it works for me. Rarely, but still. So, really, I wouldn't have minded continuing, but the hero is impossible for me to read any further. At the very least, this would definitely end up a 1-star read for me even if he gets redeemed at the end, and I'd rather just move on now.

I could give one reason I can't stand the hero, but why settle for one when there are three epic moments that made my blood boil?

First, a PSA: there's a difference between coercion and persuasion. And I have issues with those who coerce their love interests in a professional setting. Doesn't matter if it's just a little pressure; that it happens at all is enough to set me off. Here, the hero refuses to go ahead with a scheduled photo shoot unless the heroine is present, just because he wants to see her. Excuse me, is that supposed to be sweet? It's not. It's disrespectful of and undermines her profession and those of the ones who work with her.

Second, and this is worse, believe me: , and he doesn't tell her. He hasn't, still, even after five chapters. Oh, I'm sure it will be a major conflict later, but are you freaking kidding me? Not only does this arse of a hero undermine the professional, he also totally robs her of her very agency as a woman, period. I've given it five chapters, a quarter of the total length of the book, and still no peep about this tiny little detail. An accident is one thing, but willfully keeping the knowledge from someone who would suffer the repercussions the most? Unforgivable.

But wait! There's more. Third time's the charm, after all. Since I waited for #2 to be brought up, I had the misfortune of getting another dose of the hero's brilliant personality. There I was, enjoying the dancing dimension of the story, but he had to go and spoil it. Of course.

Hero: Are you up for a death drop?
Heroine: No.
Hero: I won't let you fall. Trust me. Do you?
Heroine: No. (And no, heroine, that you kinda want to doesn't count here.)
>Hero does it anyway, although a "less daring version".
Hero: Not bad, right? Do you trust me now?
Heroine: No.
>Hero does it anyway, again, because why the hell not, right?.
>Heroine loses footing and almost falls.
>Hero gets mad.
Hero: Why didn't you trust me?

Why? Why? Hahaha.

That he realizes the error of his ways immediately after in this scene no longer matters to me. Not after all the red flags. Hero has broken my trust three times. and he hasn't even earned it once. So, no, hero, I don't trust you. You've never given me, the reader, a single reason I should even consider to.

I trully enjoyed reading this book. Empi really brought the romance jump off the page. Though I thought their lovemaking came fast too fast for my liking, they barely met for business, it all worked out in the end. Chantelle is a very hard to get woman that comes across Lord who media portrayed as a playboy and who didn't do a damn thing to stop those picutres in the tabloids and gossip. He just let everyone have a field day guessing who is his next lady of the day. While he planned to get to Cnanetlle the enire time. She's so jaded at times it made me shake my head in dissbelief. She doesn't think she was worthy of love after her shaimleslly failed relationship that cost her her first baby. Yes, she's been burnt, and now she's afraid to open to anyone. And whle she is working hard to denay any attraction to Lord, her heart had other ideas.I also liked that Lord's family is portrayed as rich, powerful and influential but they still were loving people, mom who likes to cook and take care of her already grown children, dad who like his bbq, one wouldn't mix them with snobbs of society. I expected to find them being served with domestic help like stiff servants in white gloves.
There were some great visual and descrptive passages of the houses and interiors, I'd love to see some more of the scenery as to the landscape since this takes place in Africa and I think readers would love to see it on the page. I'm also very glad to see there is a modern Africa not just the hopelss destitute we see on TV on World Vision and UNICEF.
Great work, Empi. Looking forward to reading your next book.

Love Begins

This is the classic boy meets girl; girl and boy fall in love, but with a twist....a baby! I hated Lord when he allowed his ego to protrude and did not to contact Chantelle when they discovered she was pregnant, they argued, and they broke-up. His uninhibited profession of love for her on live TV made Him my hero again. They finally got it together and found there way back into one another's arms for a lifetime.
