Muhammed Zafar Iqbal (Bengali: মুহম্মদ জাফর ইকবাল) is one of the most famous Bangladeshi author of Science-Fiction and Children's Literature ever to grace the Bengali literary community since the country's independence in 1971. He is a professor of Computer Science & Engineering at Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST). Before that, Iqbal worked as a research scientist in Bell Communication Research for six years until 1994.
Birth and Family Background:
Iqbal was born on 23 December 1952 in Sylhet. His father, Foyzur Rahman Ahmed, was a police officer. In his childhood, he traveled various part of Bangladesh, because of his father's transferring job. Zafar Iqbal was encouraged by his father for writing at an early life. He wrote his first science fiction work at the age of seven. On 5 May 1971, during the liberation war of Bangladesh, the Pakistan's invading army captured his father and killed him brutally in the bank of a river.
Education:
Iqbal passed SSC exam from Bogra Zilla School in 1968 and HSC exam from Dhaka College in 1970. He earned his BSc in Physics from Dhaka University in 1976. In the same year Iqbal went to University of Washington to obtain his PhD and earned the degree in 1982.
Personal Life:
Iqbal married Dr. Yasmeen Haque in 1978. Yasmeen is the Dean of the Life Science Department, Head of the Physics Department, Provost of the Shohid Janoni Jahanara Imam Hall and a researcher at SUST. They have two children - son Nabil and daughter Yeshim. Yeshim translated the book Amar Bondhu Rashed (Rashed, My Friend) written by her father. Iqbal's elder brother, Humayun Ahmed, was the most popular author and film-maker of Bangladesh since its independence. Humayun died after a nine-month struggle against colorectal cancer on the 19 July 2012. His younger brother, Ahsan Habib, is the editor of the satirical magazine, Unmad and one of the most reknowned cartoonist of Bangladesh.
Academic Career:
After obtaining PhD degree, Iqbal worked as a post-doctoral researcher at California Institute of Technology (CalTech) from 1983 to 1988. He then joined Bell Communications Research (Bellcore), a separate corporation from the Bell Labs (now Telcordia Technologies), as a Research Scientist. He left the institute in 1994 and joined the faculty of the Department of CSE of SUST.
Literary career:
Iqbal started writing stories from a very early age. Iqbal wrote his first short story at the age of seven. While studying in the Dhaka University Iqbal's story Copotronic Bhalobasa was published in a local magazine. But, a number of readers at that time felt that the story was based on a foreign story. To answer this allegation, he later rewrote the story and published the story in collection of stories named Copotronic Sukh Dukkho. Since then he is the most popular writer both in Bengali Science-Fiction and in Juvenile Leterature of the country.
Other Activities and Awards:
Zafar Iqbal won the Bangla Academy Award, the highest award in literature in Bangladesh, in 2004. Iqbal also played a leading role in founding Bangladesh Mathematical Olympiad. In 2011 he won Rotary SEED Award for his contribution in field of education.

আমার বন্ধু রাশেদ সম্ভবত বাংলা ভাষায় লেখা সর্বশ্রেষ্ঠ "মুক্তিযুদ্ধভিত্তিক কিশোর উপন্যাস"। মুক্তিযুদ্ধের ইতিহাস, রোমাঞ্চ, আত্মত্যাগের বিবরণের পাশাপাশি পুরোদস্তর একদল কিশোরের দুরন্তপনা আর এডভেঞ্চারের উপাখ্যান- যেখানে ইতিহাসের আড়ালে এক মুহূর্তের জন্যেও গল্পের আবেদন ফিকে হয়ে যায় না।
আর বইয়ের শেষে এসে চোখ ভিজে ওঠেনি, সেই কথাটা কেউ জোর করে অস্বীকার করতে চাইলেও অবিশ্বাস্য ঠেকবে!

অসম্ভব সুন্দর আর মনে দাগ কাটা এই উপন্যাসের পাঠানুভূতি প্রকাশের পূর্ণ ক্ষমতা বোধহয় আমার নেই। যতক্ষণ পড়ছিলাম, যেন বুঁদ হয়েছিলাম বইটিতে। আমি ঢুকে গিয়েছিলাম বইয়ের ভিতর। নিজেকে কিছুক্ষণের জন্য রাশেদের বন্ধুমহলের একজন ভেবে নিয়েছিলাম। জাফর ইকবালের কিশোর উপন্যাসকে আমি কারও সাথে তুলনা করতে পারি না।
মহান মুক্তিযুদ্ধে শিশু কিশোরদের অংশগ্রহনের অনবদ্য দিক ফুঁটে উঠেছে জাফর ইকবালের "আমার বন্ধু রাশেদ" উপন্যাসে। গোপনে রাশেদসহ একটি কিশোরদল মুক্তিবাহিনীকে অস্ত্র সরবরাহ করে। পাকিস্তানের ঘাঁটিতে আঘাত হানার জন্য একটি ম্যাপ এঁকে দেয় এই কিশোর দল। তাদের ছোট ছোট ছেলে ভেবে পাকিস্তানিরা তাদের সন্দেহ করে না। কিন্তু বেশিদিন তারা সেটা পারে না। একসময় ধরা পরে যায়। যুদ্ধ যখন ভয়াবহ পরিস্থিতি ধারণ করেছে, তখন সকলেই পালিয়ে যায়। পালায় না কেবল অকুতোভয় কিশোর, উপন্যাসের মূল চরিত্র রাশেদ।
রাশেদ এক নির্ভীক কিশোর। তার বাবা মানুষটা কেমন যেন। ছেলের একটা ভালো নামও রাখেনি সে । রাশেদের নাম রেখেছিল লাড্ডু। লাড্ডুর স্কুলের বন্ধুরা তার নাম দেয় রাশেদ হাসান। রাশেদের বাবা ছেলের খবরাখবর রাখে না তেমন। ছেলের পড়াশুনার ব্যাপারেও সে পুরোদমে উদাসীন। বাবা হয়ে সে অল্পবয়স্ক ছেলের সাথে রাজনীতির গল্প করে। রাশেদ রাতে-দিনে মিছিলে ইয়াহিয়া খানের বিরুদ্ধে শ্লোগান দেয়। সে মুক্তিবাহিনীকে সাহায্য করে। মুক্তিবাহিনীর সাথে দারুণ সম্পর্ক গড়ে উঠে রাশেদের। রাশেদের কর্মকাণ্ড দেখে উৎসাহিত হয় তার বন্ধুরাও। উপন্যাসের আরকটি গুরুত্বপূর্ণ চরিত্র শফিক ভাই অপারশনে গিয়ে মিলিটারিদের হাতে ধরা পড়ে। অকুতোভয় রাশেদের নেতৃত্বে তার বন্ধুরা কঠিন এক অভিযানের মাধ্যমে মুক্ত করে আনে শফিক ভাইকে। সবশেষে

খুব সম্ভবত মুহম্মদ জাফর ইকবালের লেখা সর্বশ্রেষ্ঠ উপন্যাস। দীর্ঘ ছাব্বিশ-সাতাশ বছর আগে প্রথমবার পড়েছিলাম '৯৪-'৯৫তে (৯৪'র ফেব্রুয়ারি বইমেলায় প্রকাশিত হয়েছিল), যখন ক্লাস ফাইভ-সিক্সে পড়তাম আর ইবু-রাশেদ-আশরাফ-ফজলুদের সমবয়সীই ছিলাম... এতগুলি বছর পর প্রায় মধ্যবয়সে এসে আবার পড়লাম। এই দীর্ঘ সময়ে কিভাবে কিভাবে জানি মনে একটা ধারণা গড়ে উঠেছিল যে ছোটবেলায় পড়েছিলাম বলেই বোধহয় কাঁচা আবেগের বশবর্তী হয়ে বইটা এতো ভাল লেগেছিল আর বারে বারে নস্টালজিয়ার রঙিন চশমায় ফিরে দেখা, বর্তমানের পরিণতমনষ্কের পাকা চোখ দিয়ে পড়লে হয়তো অতটা ধাক্কা দিতো না। আজ পড়ার পর মনে হচ্ছে ব্যাপারটা তা তো না-ই, বরং উল্টোই বলা যায়। পরবর্তী বছরগুলিতে মুজাই'র ক্রমান্বয় পুনরাবৃত্তির গৎবাঁধা গল্পের ভীড়ে হঠাৎ পুরনো প্রকৃত মাস্টারপীস পড়ে নতুন করে অনুধাবন করলাম সেই লেখাগুলি কতটা পিওর ছিল, কতটা অরিজিনাল ছিল, কতটা হৃদয়গ্রাহী ছিল। যার প্রতিটা বাক্য প্রতিটা শব্দ প্রতিটা অনুভূতি যেন এসেছে লেখকের কলম থেকে নয় মনের গভীর থেকে। মনে হচ্ছিল আমি নিজে যেন আর এখনকার এই খিটখিটে আধবুড়ো বড় মানুষটি নেই, সেই প্রথমবার পড়ার কালে ইবু-রাশেদদের সমবয়সে আবার ফিরে গেছি, তাদের পাশে থেকেই মুক্তিযুদ্ধের অদ্ভুত সুররিয়ালিস্টিক সময় ও জীবনটা ছোটদের অবাক চোখে দেখছি, অনুভব করছি। হাসপাতালের কমান্ডো মিশনের সময় লিটারেলি দেখি ইবুদের পাশাপাশি আমার বুক ধক ধক করে লাফাচ্ছে রোমাঞ্চকর উত্তেজনায়, অথচ আমি জানি কী ঘটবে কীভাবে ঘটবে তারপরেও! পুরো বইটিতেই ওই অবাস্তব বাস্তবতার রুদ্ধশ্বাস দম বন্ধ করা প্রবল উৎকণ্ঠা। আর সবকিছু ভালোয় ভালোয় মিটে যাবার পরপরই শেষের অবিষ্মরণীয় অপ্রত্যাশিত সমাপ্তি... এতো বছর পরেও একইরকমভাবে হাতুড়ির আচমকা আঘাতে যেন বুকটা আবারো ভেঙে টুকরো টুকরো করে দিলো, চোখে পানি চলে এলো। হয়তো কিশোরদের জন্য লেখা নিছক একটা কিশোর উপন্যাস, তবে নিঃসন্দেহে আমার জীবনে পড়া অন্যতম শ্রেষ্ঠ উপন্যাস।
শফিক ভাই গভীর রাতে নূর মুহম্মদের বেকারীর ছাদে আমাদের লাইট মেশিন গান কেমন করে চালাতে হয় শিখিয়ে দিতে লাগলেন। সারাক্ষণ আমরা ফিস-ফিস করে নিচু গলায় কথা বলছি, কিন্তু তবু বুঝতে পারি হঠাৎ করে শফিক ভাই আমাদের সাথে আর বাচ্চা ছেলেদের মতো কথা বলছেন না। এমনভাবে আমাদের সাথে কথা বলছেন যেন আমরা তার সমান। যেন আমরাও বড় মানুষ।
সেই অন্ধকার রাতে আমি আর রাশেদ হঠাৎ করে বড় হয়ে গেলাম।

The story covers a boy's life named Ibu - the narrator's life in 1971 in Purbo Pakistan - the time of our liberation war. In seventh grade, a transfer student has arrived in their class with a soaked admission form.
The boy does not have a name. He calls himself "Laddu" and claims his brother's name to be, "Chamcham", as they were named after sweets.
The class teacher - Mojid Sir says the students to write their favorite name and bring it on the day afterwards. And after a lot of complications, The boy is named Rashed. Ibu and his group of friends are acquainted with Rashed, and soon they are best of friends.
Ibu's story mainly revolves around Rashed - the boy who has always remained a mystery to everyone. Rashed is the main protagonist of this book. He has a weird life - he goes to...

This book has made me cry, laugh like a lunatic and smile.

I want to say only one thing. Rasheds never die, they don't. Because they, *points to your heart* live there; they're immortal.

খুব সুন্দর। মুক্তিযুদ্ধ কে কেন্দ্র করে লেখা। এর আগে সিনেমা দেখেছি, অনিল বাগচীর একদিন। আজ এরকম একটি গল্প পড়ে শেষ করলাম। মুক্তিযুদ্ধে শিশু যোদ্ধাদের অসীম সাহসের গল্প। বুকের ভেতর খালি লাগছে। বেঁচে থাক মুক্তির সব যুদ্ধ। বেঁচে থাক রাশেদের মতন মানুষরা। দেশে থাক ইবু, আশফাক।

কিছু কিছু বই আছে যেগুলো সারাজীবন পড়া যায়। এই বই তেমনই একটা। গল্পটি মেইনলি ইবু তার ছোটবেলার স্মৃতিচারন করে তার সন্তানের কাছে। গল্পের মূল চরিত্র রাশেদ নামের একটি ছেলেকে ঘিরে যার পিতৃ প্রদত্ত নাম কিনা লাড্ডু ! পরবর্তীতে সে স্কুলে ট্রান্সফার হয়ে আসলে তার ক্লাস টিচার তার নাম করন করেন রাশেদ। সেই থেকেই তার নাম হয়ে যায় রাশেদ। রাশেদ খুব দ্রুতই সবার সাথে বন্ধুত্ব করে ফেলে, অনেক প্রানবন্ত ছেলে সে। এই গল্পটি এমন এক সময়ের যখন দেশের অবস্থা টালমাটাল। একসময় যুদ্ধ শুরু হয়ে যায়। ইবু, রাশেদ, আশরাফরা সরাসরি যুদ্ধে যোগ না দিলেও পরোক্ষ ভাবে সাহায্য করতে থাকে মুক্তিযোদ্ধাদের। এমন অনেক কাহিনী উঠে এসেছে বইটিতে।

the book of a lifetime I think, I have watched the movie in a small age and I think the book is so much better than the movie itself.
Amar Bandhu Rashed tells the story of a boy rashed and how he joined the Bangladesh liberation war and how his friends helped him during that time. The book is filled with enthralling plots and many emotionally touching scenarios. I can not express in words how much of a roller coaster ride it has been, reading the book I felt as if I was standing with rashed and seeing everything from his point of view. good feeling are often never transported into words properly, so I don't want to articulate the exact emotions and how it made me feel, but this book has a deep meaning, for friendship, patriotism, treason, country, freedom and sometimes of life if considered from an open view, not as a war fiction, and I love this book now and will forever.

আমার সবসময় মুক্তিযুদ্ধের গল্প পড়তে ভালো লাগে। আমার বন্ধু রাশেদ বইটি আমার পড়া সেরা একটি বই। বইটি মূলত মুক্তিযুদ্ধের উপর লেখা একটি বই। সেখানে রাশেদ তার বন্ধুদের নিয়ে মুক্তিযুদ্ধের সময় অত্যন্ত সাহসিকতার সাথে মুক্তিযোদ্ধাদের নানারকম সাহায্য করে। বইটি
যে পড়বে তার চোখ দিয়ে জল বেরোবেই এবং সেটা আমি নিজেই পড়ে বুঝতে পেরেছি।

I can definitely understand why this has such high ratings and good reviews, my enjoyment was limited simply by the fact that I just don’t click with war literature idk man whether it’s fiction or non-fiction something about it just makes me unable to be properly engaged. Every time after finishing I just go “right, that happened” and there is just no strong feelings involved whatsoever.

এই গল্পটার প্রতিটি চরিত্র অনেক জীবন্ত মনে হয়েছে। প্রত্যেকটা সাইড চরিত্রগুলোর জন্যও আমি টান অনুভব করছিলাম। খুব কম গল্পই এমনটা করতে পারে।

জাফর স্যারের বই সবসময়ই আমাকে ইন্সপায়ার করে। তবে আমার বন্ধু রাশেদ আমার কাছে সব দিক থেকেই একটু বেশি স্পেশাল। ছোটবেলায় এটাই প্রথম বই ছিল যেটা আমাকে দেশপ্রেমের আসল ধারণা দিতে পেরেছিল। রাশেদের চোখে আমাকে দেশকে ভালবাসতে শিখিয়েছিল। আর অ্যাডরেনাল রাশের কথা না বললেই নয়। রাশেদ, ইবু, ফজলু আর আশরাফ যা করেছে তা কাল্পনিক হলেও যে উম্মাদনা ওরা সঞ্চার করেছিল আমার মধ্যে তা আজও আমাকে উদ্দীপ্ত করে।

লেখিকা খুব সহজ ভাষায় মূল বইটি অনুবাদ করেছেন। মূল বইয়ের ভাব, হাস্যরস, দুঃখবোধ প্রায়ই অপরিবর্তিত ছিল। কে অনুবাদ করেছে দেখতে হবে না? হাজার হোক, জাফর ইকবাল স্যারের মেয়ে বলে কথা! ইয়েসিম থেকে মৌলিক কিছু রচনাও আশা করি।

I didn't think I'd enjoy this book this much! Going to try to review this someday. If I can't, just hear that Ibu's growth was great, Fazlu and Ashraf are amazing, Oru Apa and Shafik Bhai are gems, and Rashed will become the stuff of legends.

এই বইয়ের কাহিনী নিয়ে বানানো মুভিটি দেখেছিলাম অনেক দিন আগে। এবার সরাসরি বইটি পড়লাম। খুবই চমৎকার একটি কাহিনী। বাংলা ভাষায় শিশু কিশোর উপযোগী এ রকম আরো অনেকগুলা উপন্যাস লিখা দরকার।

চলুন আজকে এমন একটা বই নিয়ে কথা বলবো যেটা থেকে আসলে আমার বই পড়ার যাত্রা শুরু হয়েছিল। আমার পছন্দের বই গুলোর মধ্যে এটি অন্যতম । জাফর ইকবালের লেখা 'আমার বন্ধু রাশেদ' উপন্যাসের শুরুতেই দেখা যায় ১৯৭০ সালের কোনো একদিন স্কুলে একটি নতুন ছেলে এসে ভর্তি হয়। সে দেখতে যেমন অদ্ভুত ছিল তার নামটাও ছিল বেশ অদ্ভুত। সে নিজেকে “ লাড্ডু” বলে পরিচয় দিয়েছিল কারন তার নিজের কোনো ভালো নাম নেই। তাই শ্রেণিশিক্ষক তার নাম দেন 'রাশেদ'। এই রাশেদকে নিয়েই বইয়ের গল্প। ধীরে ধীরে সে ক্লাসের সকলের বন্ধু হয়ে ওঠে। ১৯৭১ সালে মুক্তিযুদ্ধ শুরু হলে পুরো দেশ যখন বিপর্যস্ত হয়ে পড়ে, তখন বইয়ের গল্পকথক, রাশেদ ও তাদের অন্যান্য বন্ধুরাও প্রত্যক্ষ ও পরোক্ষভাবে জড়িয়ে পড়ে সেই যুদ্ধে। তবে শেষ পর্যন্ত কি হয়েছিল? তারা কি পেরেছিল শত্রুর বিরুদ্ধে লড়াই করে বিজয় ছিনিয়ে আনতে?
র্সবশেষে একটাই কথা বলবো এই বইটা শেষ হওয়ার পর মনে হয়েছিল, “ ইস্, আমি যদি রাশেদ হতাম “ !!!

কী অদ্ভুত অনুভূতি! এতো সুন্দর গল্প! রাশেদ ভালো থেকো ওপারে।
আমার বন্ধু রাশেদের মতো সব বন্ধুরাই হোক। যারা বয়স থেকেও ভারী ভারী সিদ্ধান্ত নেবে। উচ্চতা থেকেও উচ্চ অপারেশন করবে। একটা দেশ গঠনে, একটা জাতিকে মৃত্যুপূরী থেকে উদ্ধার করবে। সবাইকে সুখী করে একসময় নিজেকে বিলীন করে দেবে।
দারুণ বই এটা। ভালোলাগা মনে থাকুক। লিখে দিলেই তো শেষ হয়ে যাবে। তার থেকে এটা জিইয়ে রাখি মনের ভেতর।

The first time I read this book, I was 10, maybe 12 years old. And I have been reading this book periodically every couple of years. I already know what happens where, and I know every little detail of this book. Growing up, I wanted to be Rashed/Ibu, it shifted from time to time. But I definitely wanted a friend like Rashed. (I have now! After all this time) But now, after all these years, I don't know whether I can be Ibu or Rashed or Shafiq bhai or I wanted to be with Toru apa! This time I felt like an outsider. I was reading the book, I was imagining all the scenes, but I felt like I am watching everything from a third-person perspective! Maybe I grew up or maybe my ideologies differed far away from the ones portraited in this book. Whatever it is, I know one thing for certain now. There is no other book of this caliber. Am I biased? Maybe! After all, this box is basically, "What did you think?". Will my perspective shift after years?

রাশেদ was a new kid who quickly became friends with ইবু. Things were going great for them until the liberation war started. রাশেদ loved his country so much and always kept himself updated with the country's politics and news. When the chance presented itself to help the freedom fighters achieve their goal (getting rid of the militaries from the village as well as the country) and save the life of someone they were close to, রাশেদ didn't hesitate to step in. So did ইবু until his family fled from the village.
The friendship between রাশেদ and ইবু was so precious. রাশেদ was an extraordinary kid who despite his fears, did not hesitate to jump in and fight for his country. He was intelligent, and brave and proved his loyalty to his country. He proved the fact that age didn't matter when it came to doing the right thing and helping to achieve what one believes in. Respect!
I really enjoyed the plot, characters, world-building, and writing style. Loved it so much.

জাফর স্যার এর অনেক বই আমি পরেছি ............তার মধ্যে এই বইটা পড়ে মনের জায়গা দখল করে আছে............হয়তবা আমার নাম রাশেদ বলে........................ অনেক সময় এই বই এর গল্পের কথা মনে করে নিজেকে অনেক বড় মাপের মানুষ মনে হয় ......আনেক ভাল কাজ করার জন্য অনুপ্রাণিত করে......... ধন্যবাদ জানাই জাফর ইকবাল স্যারকে............
