Tired of looking for love Amy Anderson decides that an astrological dating agency is the only way she is going to meet the man of her dreams. Star Fish follows Amy’s hysterical search for her ‘sole mate’ as she dates her way through the twelve signs of the zodiac. So who will finally woo Amy? Will it be Ted the Arian photographer with a passion for ice skating, or maybe Laurence, the Libran IT whiz kid who likes to get behind the wheel of a fast car? Or, how about Capricorn Christopher, the owner of Starr & Son, the dating agency? You’ll be kept guessing until the very last page!
I have no freaking clue what the heck I just read. It gets 2 stars because it was entertaining (and a big enough train wreck) that I finished it.
I hated Amy. Could not freaking stand the character. She was a drunk, plain and simple. She relied on zodiac signs throughout the entire freaking book and since she is of the fish symbol, referred to herself as a fish in almost the entire book. I get the use of zodiac signs and astrology in books, this was overkill. It got to the point where it was beyond annoying. Also, she put absolutely nothing into these relationships before she fell into bed with the guys (usually a result of drinking). She would then realize what she was doing, declare she was going to "shape up" only to fall back into the pattern.
I hated the ending of this book. There was no character development on the guys part (I won't say who it is so as not to give it away) and I was left thinking "really, that is how that train wreck ended". It ended fast. You think your going to get more and see how it all works out, nope. Just a hug on a beach and a proposal (again - you don't know who it is).
I hated the ending. I was rooting for another character, but ya know what, kind of glad the selfish, drunken Amy ended up with who she did. Who I was rooting for deserves a nice girl.
I did like some of the side characters. The UK terms didn't bother me and in fact, I loved a lot of them (being a huge fan of the BBC, it didn't even take me time to figure out what was being said).
This book was just a disappointment, which is sad. There was a good storyline in between the drunken parties and the falling into bed drunk with guys. I think the author could have focused more on building up the story line and less on jusat having the chick party and this book could have been a 3.5-4 star book.
When I saw this indie book advertised I got very excited. I always try to mix in indie books in pile of to-read reading material and this one seemed just the thing to break up the literature. Amy has struck out in the dating scene in every way imaginable and decides it's time to call in a professional. As an avid reader of horoscopes she chooses Starr and Sun dating agency, one that is perfectly in-tune to her astrological charts, as it sets you up based on star signs. Amy decides she's going to date her way through the stars until she finds the sign that's the perfect match for her Piscean self.
I have to admit I enjoy light hearted chick-lit. It's not good literature, I won't even try to defend that, but a cheery fluff-novel with some romance mixed in is good for the soul every now and then. Unfortunately that's not even close to what you get with this book. Amy may say she's looking for her soul-mate but what she's really trying to do is sleep her way through the zodiac, taking all of her dates (well, the ones she finds attractive) into the bedroom just hours after meeting them. She even breaks up with and relentlessly mocks one of her dates who refuses to sleep with her after only going on two dates. She then repeatedly sleeps with a married man who lied to her about his identity the first time, and once on the grave of his dead brother...during the wake. As if that isn't enough to make you hate this supposedly "lovable heroine" she also throws over the rest of her lovers for her currently married high school sweet heart (who, of course, lies about his marital status) and throws over the only decent character in the whole book.
While this kind of moral depravity might make for an interesting book May's writing style does little to make up for her character's flaws. The first half of the book May switches from first to second person narration for no particular reason (except maybe lazy editing) and a few of the chapters seemed to be in the wrong order (especially chapters 19-21). That, paired with numerous spelling, grammar, formatting, and editing errors made this book difficult to get through. Even overlooking the proofing and editing errors May's writing leaves a lot to be desired with a primary character you can't help but hate and secondary characters that are nothing but stereotypes.
This book has a funny, intriguing premise and I was looking forward to a lighthearted, comedic read only to be totally and completely disappointed.
I love romantic comedies that have a heavy dating element, and the idea of trying to date your way through the twelve signs of the zodiac really amused me, even though I am not sure that I believe in astrological compatibility.
The first thing that struck me about Star Fish, was Amy and her base similarities with myself. We are both pisces, we are both single and had I read this book a month ago we would have been the same age, so I automatically felt an affinity with her.
As a result I thoroughly enjoyed meeting her friends, and seeing her hilarious dating antics. She even finds a dating agency that matches people based on star sign, so all she has to do is pick the men, and see where the fates take her.
We are introduced to all manner of men, in a variety of creative dating scenarios. Some of them I liked a lot more than others, and then there were the absolute nightmares but of course they had the most sexual chemistry with Amy.
I also loved meeting Amy's huge group of friends, there is a good variety of personality types within them, and generally they are all great. They are all supportive in different way's of Amy's dating mission, and during the course of the book we learn about their romantic journeys too.
Each chapter starts with a horoscope, either for Amy, or a potential date, which sets the tone for the chapter. I really enjoyed Amy and all of her quirks, although I noticed a distinct lack of frogs in her smelly pond, even though she seemed to like her frogs and her pet cat!
In a book that features ice skating, weddings, go karting, incredibly ugly rich men with speech impediments, horse racing, embarrassing incidents and all manner of other antics, I was very amused the entire time, and really enjoyed the experience of reading Star Fish.
I got this eBook when it was available as a free download from Amazon. I also read and reviewed Working it Out by the same author.
Straight away I liked Amy and her friends – oh how I love characters who are a little bit crazy! Amy’s cat was also a great part of the book, I loved the idea of having a male cat called Penelope
When Amy joined a dating agency which specialised in setting people up according to their star sign I just knew there would be some laughs ahead. I found myself looking forward to getting to the man with my husband’s star sign to see if the character would be anything like him (it turned out that there were some similarities actually).
The thing that really stood out with this book was how much I laughed out loud, my family thought I had gone mad because I was literally crying with laughter at one point (a scene involving a restaurant toilet and yoga, keep an eye out for that part).
This book never failed to surprise me, I just couldn’t predict what would happen and was guessing right until the end. A shocking twist in an airport hotel, another in a curry house and then later on a devastating occurrence were just some of the events that added to the excitement running throughout the story.
There were a few sexual scenes that I felt fitted the storyline and weren’t out-of-place and all this led up to a lovely ending although I was kind of hoping for a different outcome.
This was a fast-paced and fun book that held my interest throughout, a fab one-day read!
Good book, interesting characters, my favourite has to be Liv as she was full of joy. I liked Brad and Sean too, Had sad and happy moments. Look forward to Nicola's next book.
I really don't know why I finished this, I guess the optimist in me thought it could only get better. It also needs proof reading, I had to reread some sentences to make sense of them.
'Star Fish’ is a complete chick lit, easy reading, comedic read. You can tell from the blurb that it will be a fun and ‘escapism’ type read. The type of book that takes you out of the stresses and regularities of your days, and excerts some excitement where you can go dating with Amy. You can follow the fun dates, the hot dates and the incredibly cringy dates. Dating her way through the star signs and getting peeks of the guys and Amy’s horoscope was a mixed up bag of laughs and fun. Along with Amy and the blind date guys that she met, we also see a lot from Amy’s friends. Of course being fun chick lit, there is a gay best friend which boosts plenty of fun, sympathy and great friendship with.
I’m not sure if the Author researched what is typically the characteristics of each star sign, but I’m not sure I believe all that really anyway. It did take my interest though, how each star sign was characterised, particularly my own…… just out of general interest you know!
“Scorpions are passionate and intense beings, filled with desire. They are secretive and complex. Don’t try to get too much out of them or they’ll become suspicious and leave. They are particularly resourceful characters”.
Well, whether these are true or not, the descriptions fitted with each guy of that particular birth date, and that is part of what made the book fun.
Another fab book by Nicola May, British humour and chick lit fun all the way. I loved it.
This book was all over the place. It felt like it was supposed to be funny but the main character was so unlikable. The side characters, aka her friends, were much better and seemed to be too good for her. Then those awkward sex scenes would pop up and they were so cringey and out of place. The ending was about what she deserved for her behavior all through this book. I am so glad that it was a fast read so I could leave that world behind quickly.
I didn't really enjoy the storyline. Too many characters and Amy seemed to fall for the worst men. Not sure she ended up with the right one either. All a bit silly.
Another great book from Nicola May. Lots of laugh out loud moments. Good character portrayal - you really care about what happens to the main character, and hope that she gets her ‘happy ending’.
I loved the idea of this book. A woman using a dating agency to date her way through all the signs of the zodiac. Firstly, I thought it was a totally novel idea, not a major fan of star signs myself, but a really good way to narrow down the massive amounts of same old dating profiles out there. Secondly, I am totally on board with any kind of books that revolves around Internet dating or a dating agency, it's a minefield of bad dates out there, if there can be humour found amongst that minefield, I am all for hearing about it!
I have to admit that I wasn't a major fan of the main character in this book. I disliked her impatience and her indecision. At some points in the book, she didn't give the men even half a chance to impress her, and yet in other points in the book, she was completely blind to the fact she was being taken for a ride. Well either that, or she could see she was being manipulated and just carried on regardless because, well, at least she had a date! I know it can be tempting to grasp on to any shred of positivity when you are in that dating minefield, but I really wanted to take Amy and ask her what on earth she was doing either dismissing this man too soon, or dating him for far too long. Perhaps though, this was the reason that I found this book so involving, you can't not be engaged with a character and want to jump into a book and give her a stern talking to.
I really enjoy Nicola May's writing style. She doesn't go into unnecessary details about characters or settings and really gets into the storyline in a light and breezy way. The tales in this novel were highly amusing at points, if a little frustrating at times. It was quite a short novel, a very quick read, and some extra time spent on certain story lines wouldn't have damaged the book at all. This, however, is my only criticism, and a desire for more writing, more storyline, can't be bad can it?
I think that anyone who is single or has ever been involved in this kind of dating, whether it be through an agency, online, or set ups from friends, will totally appreciate the stories within this novel. It was really quick read and so perfect for those choosing their holiday reading. The writing style is easy, and it is full of amusing quirky characters. Whether you like Amy or not, you cannot be helped from getting involved in her story and her quest for her true astrological match!
Liked the premise with the blind dates, interesting story. I found Amy a bit much - getting streamed at men who did her wrong - meanwhile behaving even worse herself (throwing herself at a married man on his wedding day etc). I didn't really like the way her character behaved and the constant use of the word "minger" grated on me a little. However, this was a free kindle download, so no real grizzles. This is the third I have read of Nicola May. As a freebie, they are not bad. Light and quick reading that you can pick up and put down without losing the plot. I think Nicola has potential as an author and I admire that she has got these out there all by herself. I wish her characters were a little less promiscuous, but I guess she is trying to set her books apart from other chick lit writers, and she has succeeded.
Tired of looking and being unlucky in love, thirty-two year old singleton Amy Anderson decides to join a dating agency. Amy’s plan is to go on different dates with men from each sign of the Zodiac. My hopes this will help her to find her soul mate.
What follows are a series of hysterical dates and situations. Can Amy a dreamy Piscean plan find her the man of her dreams?
This is a brilliant book by Nicola May. The book is a real laugh, written in a nice fast witty pace, as we follow Amy on her quest to find her Mr Right. With some great characters, steamy scenes and just a touch of sadness that does slightly alter the pace and emotion of the story, but the book soon returns back to humour and all in all is a fun chick lit story that is worth the read.
This book just didn't do it for me. I felt that I was reading a rough first draft that needed some major editing. The author told instead of showing and there were moments where I wasn't sure quite what was going on.
While I flew through the first part of the book, I became bogged down at the end with everything that the author was trying to cram in. In addition, I found the main character to be annoying. Partway through the book I thought she was going to redeem herself and grow as a character but she didn't. Instead she just falls back into the same old patterns and habits. I found the end to be disappointing as well.
Piscean Amy sets out to date a man from each of the twelve zodiac signs when she joins a dating agency. She meets far more Mr Wrongs than Mr Rights but there are many fun moments for the reader along the way.
I didn’t always agree with Amy’s choices and of all the book’s characters, my favourite was Brad, her gay friend, who was one of the two genuine men in her life.
If you like chick lit, you’ll enjoy this one. 3.5 stars.
It's a good enough story, with nice short chapters so you can squeeze in "just one more" without feeling like you need to stop mid chapter to sleep or whatever. However, it could benefit from a proof-reader - there was one instance where it switched from first to third person, and a couple of times a "sole-mate" was referred to instead of a "soul-mate".
Overall, it was an entertaining read with a couple of giggles, but I had to deduct a star for the poor grammar.
This bit of Brit Chick Lit should appeal to Bridget Jones fans. Amy is about to turn 33 and she still hasn't found her soul mate. She decides to apply to a dating service. This particular dating service matches people by astrological signs and Amy is hoping to find someone compatible with Pisces. She finds an array of mama's boys, religious fanatics, and scammers. This book has some funny parts and anyone who has experienced the dating game should be able to relate to it.
