Muhammed Zafar Iqbal (Bengali: মুহম্মদ জাফর ইকবাল) is one of the most famous Bangladeshi author of Science-Fiction and Children's Literature ever to grace the Bengali literary community since the country's independence in 1971. He is a professor of Computer Science & Engineering at Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST). Before that, Iqbal worked as a research scientist in Bell Communication Research for six years until 1994.
Birth and Family Background:
Iqbal was born on 23 December 1952 in Sylhet. His father, Foyzur Rahman Ahmed, was a police officer. In his childhood, he traveled various part of Bangladesh, because of his father's transferring job. Zafar Iqbal was encouraged by his father for writing at an early life. He wrote his first science fiction work at the age of seven. On 5 May 1971, during the liberation war of Bangladesh, the Pakistan's invading army captured his father and killed him brutally in the bank of a river.
Education:
Iqbal passed SSC exam from Bogra Zilla School in 1968 and HSC exam from Dhaka College in 1970. He earned his BSc in Physics from Dhaka University in 1976. In the same year Iqbal went to University of Washington to obtain his PhD and earned the degree in 1982.
Personal Life:
Iqbal married Dr. Yasmeen Haque in 1978. Yasmeen is the Dean of the Life Science Department, Head of the Physics Department, Provost of the Shohid Janoni Jahanara Imam Hall and a researcher at SUST. They have two children - son Nabil and daughter Yeshim. Yeshim translated the book Amar Bondhu Rashed (Rashed, My Friend) written by her father. Iqbal's elder brother, Humayun Ahmed, was the most popular author and film-maker of Bangladesh since its independence. Humayun died after a nine-month struggle against colorectal cancer on the 19 July 2012. His younger brother, Ahsan Habib, is the editor of the satirical magazine, Unmad and one of the most reknowned cartoonist of Bangladesh.
Academic Career:
After obtaining PhD degree, Iqbal worked as a post-doctoral researcher at California Institute of Technology (CalTech) from 1983 to 1988. He then joined Bell Communications Research (Bellcore), a separate corporation from the Bell Labs (now Telcordia Technologies), as a Research Scientist. He left the institute in 1994 and joined the faculty of the Department of CSE of SUST.
Literary career:
Iqbal started writing stories from a very early age. Iqbal wrote his first short story at the age of seven. While studying in the Dhaka University Iqbal's story Copotronic Bhalobasa was published in a local magazine. But, a number of readers at that time felt that the story was based on a foreign story. To answer this allegation, he later rewrote the story and published the story in collection of stories named Copotronic Sukh Dukkho. Since then he is the most popular writer both in Bengali Science-Fiction and in Juvenile Leterature of the country.
Other Activities and Awards:
Zafar Iqbal won the Bangla Academy Award, the highest award in literature in Bangladesh, in 2004. Iqbal also played a leading role in founding Bangladesh Mathematical Olympiad. In 2011 he won Rotary SEED Award for his contribution in field of education.

এক ছটফটে ও দুরন্ত কিশোরীর উপাখ্যান হল 'বকুলাপ্পু' কিশোর উপন্যাসটি। তার দুরন্তপনার কোন সীমা নেই। মাছ ধরা, সাঁতার কাটা, গাছে ওঠা, এমনকি প্রয়োজনে মারপিটও করাও, ফল স্বরূপ বড়দের বকুনি খেতে হয় তাকে।
নীলা ।বড়লোক বাবা-মায়ের একমাত্র মেয়ে নীলা। এক দূর্ঘটনায় মাকে হারিয়ে মানসিকভাবে অসুস্থ হয়ে পড়ে।বলতে গেলে বেঁচে থাকার ইচ্ছাটাই তার মরে গেছে। তবুও বকুল আর বকুলের পোষ মানা শুশুকের মাঝেই নীলা খুঁজে পায় বেঁচে থাকার অদম্য বাসনা। মৃত্যুকে হার মানিয়ে সে আবার বাঁচতে শেখে। টুশকি নামক শুশুকটার জন্য তার গভীর ভালোবাসা সৃষ্টি হয়। আর বকুল হয়ে ওঠে প্রানের বন্ধু। আর এই টুসকি যখন চুরি হয়ে যায় তখন টুসকিকে বাঁচানোর জন্য দুই বান্ধবীর প্রানের আকুতি নিয়েই মুহম্মদ জাফর ইকবালের অনবদ্য কিশোর উপন্যাস “বকুলাপ্পু”।
নীলা ।বড়লোক বাবা-মায়ের একমাত্র মেয়ে নীলা। এক দূর্ঘটনায় মাকে হারিয়ে মানসিকভাবে অসুস্থ হয়ে পড়ে।বলতে গেলে বেঁচে থাকার ইচ্ছাটাই তার মরে গেছে। তবুও বকুল আর বকুলের পোষ মানা শুশুকের মাঝেই নীলা খুঁজে পায় বেঁচে থাকার অদম্য বাসনা। মৃত্যুকে হার মানিয়ে সে আবার বাঁচতে শেখে। টুশকি নামক শুশুকটার জন্য তার গভীর ভালোবাসা সৃষ্টি হয়। আর বকুল হয়ে ওঠে প্রানের বন্ধু। আর এই টুসকি যখন চুরি হয়ে যায় তখন টুসকিকে বাঁচানোর জন্য দুই বান্ধবীর প্রানের আকুতি নিয়েই মুহম্মদ জাফর ইকবালের অনবদ্য কিশোর উপন্যাস “বকুলাপ্পু”।

ছোট্ট একটা সুন্দর উপন্যাস। একটা সিনেমা কি টেলিফ্লিম হলে ভারী হিট হত। তা আর আফসোস এর কথা কি বলি!

বাবা মা আর মেয়ে নীলাকে নিয়ে সুখের সংসার, ছিল নীলাদের। ছিল কারন রোড এক্সিডেন্টে মারা যায় নীলার মা। বাবা আহত হলেও বেঁচে যায় শেষ পর্যন্ত। নীলা সুস্থ থাকলেও ভীতরে ভীতরে মারা যায় সে। অন্তত সবাই তাই ভাবত। নীলা বাচার আগ্রহ হারিয়ে ফেলে। ধীরে ধীরে মৃত্যুর দিকে আগাতে থাকে সে। দুনিয়ার সব কিছুর প্রতিই তার অনাগ্রহ। হঠাত করে একদিন লঞ্চ দিয়ে ভ্রমনের সময় দেখতে পায় ভরা নদীতে গাছের মগডাল থেকে পানিতে লাফ দিচ্ছে একটা মেয়ে। অবাক বিষ্ময়ে কঊতুহল অনুভব করে সে।
বকুল। গ্রামের দুরন্ত মেয়ে। বাচ্চাদের জন্য বকুল আপু। বকুল+আপু=বকুলাপ্পু। ১২/১৩ বছর বয়স। এই বয়সে গ্রামের সবার বিয়ে হয়ে গেলেও বকুল এখনো পড়াশোনা চালিয়ে যাচ্ছে। সেটাও সে কতদিন চালাতে পারবে সেটা দেখার বিষয়। নদী ভাল লাগে তার। প্রায়ই নদীর ধারে বসে থাকে সে। মাঝে মাঝেই সে দেখা একটা লঞ্চকে। সাদা ধবধবে রাজহাসের মতন লঞ্চ। সেই লঞ্চের বারান্দায় একটা ফুটফুটে মেয়ে। তাকিয়ে তাকিয়ে দেখে সে মেয়েটাকে।
টুশকি। শুশুক। বকুল নাম দিয়েছে তার। বকুলের গ্রামের পাশের নদীতে থাকে। একদিন বকুল দেখতে পায় টুশকিকে আহত অবস্থায় অর্ধেক ডাংগায় অর্ধেক পানিতে পরে আছে সে। বকুলের সেবায় সুস্থ হয়ে যায় সে। তারপর বকুলের সাথে বন্ধুত্ব গড়ে ওঠে।
ভালই কাটছিল সব। একদিন কে যেন টুশকিকে ধরে নিয়ে যায়। এখান থেকেই কাহিনী এগিয়ে যায়। তিন জন প্রধান চরিত্রর ইন্টারাক্টে কাহিনী এগিয়ে চলে।

বকুল+আপু=বকুলাপ্পু!
গ্রামের ছেলেমেয়েদের কাছে বকুলাপ্পু নামেই পরিচিত ১২-১৩ বছর বয়সী এ মেয়ে। মেয়ে হয়েও তার চাঞ্চল্যতার জন্য মায়ের কাছে যে বকা শুনতে হয়,তা থোরাই কেয়ার করে সে। বরং ছেলেদের চেয়ে সে সবকিছুতে এগিয়ে।
সারাদিন গ্রামের এ প্রান্ত থেকে ওই প্রান্ত পুরোটাই তার দখলে।
প্রচন্ড সাহসী মেয়েটা নদীর ধারের উচু হিজল গাছে থেকে লাফ দিতেও ভয় পায় না,যেটাকে কিনা বুড়ির কুসংস্কারের ভয়ে সবাই দূর দিয়ে চলে। বকুল অবাক মেয়ে। নদীর ধারের এক অসুস্থ শুশুক কে সে সুস্থ করে তোলে, পরবর্তীতে শুশুকের সাথে তার খুব ভালো বন্ধুত্ব হয়, তার নাম সে রাখে টুশকি(শুশকি-টুশকি)। বকুলের সংকেত পেলেই টুশকি চলে আসে নদীর ধারে। টুশকির সাথে সে নদীর ভেতরে ঘুড়ে বেড়ায়।
অন্যদিকে,সমবয়সী নীলা একটা অ্যাকসিডেন্টে তার মাকে হারায়। অনেক চেষ্টার পরও এই ট্রমা থেকে সে বের হতে পারে না। বড়লোক বাবার একমাত্র মেয়ে আক্রান্ত হয় এক ধরনের মানসিক রোগে, যে রোগ হলে ব্রেইন ডিসিশান নিয়ে নেয় যে সে আর বাচবে না। সত্যিকার কোন অসুখ না হয়েও তা একজন মানুষকে ধীরে ধীরে মেরে ফেলে। মেডিকেল সাইন্সে যার কোন চিকিৎসা নেই। এমন পরিস্থিতি নীলার বাবার সর্বোচ্চ চেষ্টা থাকে মেয়েকে ভালো রাখতে। একদিন লঞ্চে ঘুড়তে গিয়ে নীলার চোখ আটকে যায় অনেকটা দূরে, নদীর পার ঘেসে হিজল গাছের মাথার ওপর তারই বয়সী একটা মেয়ের ওপর। বাবার কাছে আবদার রাখায়, নীলার পরিচয় ঘটে, 'বকুলাপ্পু' নামক এক সাহসী কিশোরীর সাথে।
তারপরে গল্পটা মজার।
বকুল খুব সহজে আপন করে নেয় নীলাকে,নীলার পরিচয় ঘটে গ্রামে অনেক না জানা, না দেখা অনেক ব্যাপারের সাথে। সে জানতে পারে বকুলের টুশকির কথা,তার সাথে বকুলের বন্ধুত্বের কথা। জীবনটা একটু ভিন্নভাবে ধরা দেয়ে নীলার কাছে। নীলা ধীরে ধীরে জীবনে বেচেঁ থাকার তাগীদ অনুভব করতে শুরু করে, যার ফলে মিরাকল ঘটে যায় নীলার জীবনে। সে সুস্থ্য হয়ে ওঠে এবং স্বাভাবিক জীবনযাপন শুরু করে।
বিদেশ/শহর যেখানেই থাকুক বকুলের সাথে চিঠি আদানপ্রদান চলতে থাকে নীলার। ঘটনাক্রমে বকুলের টুশকি চুরী হয়ে যায় তাদের নদী থেকে, যেটাকে শহরে ধরে নিয়ে যাওয়া হয় শুশুকের খেলা দেখানোর জন্য। এ খবর জানার সাথে সাথেই বকুল শহরে রওনা হয় এবং নীলা ও নীলার বাবার সহায়তায় টুশকি কে উদ্ধার করে।
বকুলাপ্পু একটি কিশোর উপন্যাস। বন্ধুত্ব,জীবনের প্রতি ভালবাসা,প্রানীর প্রতি ভালবাসা, মা-মেয়ে/বাবা-মেয়ের ভালবাসা এবং প্রাণী সম্পদ রক্ষার ব্যাপার ব্যাপারগুলো বেশ শিক্ষনীয়!

গ্রামের ছেলেমেয়েদের কাছে বকুলাপ্পু নামেই পরিচিত ১২-১৩ বছর বয়সী এ মেয়ে। মেয়ে হয়েও তার চাঞ্চল্যতার জন্য মায়ের কাছে যে বকা শুনতে হয়,তা থোরাই কেয়ার করে সে। বরং ছেলেদের চেয়ে সে সবকিছুতে এগিয়ে।
সারাদিন গ্রামের এ প্রান্ত থেকে ওই প্রান্ত পুরোটাই তার দখলে।

সুচেতনভাবে আমার পড়া স্যারের প্রথম বই। ক্লাস ফাইভে থাকতে পড়েছিলাম, আমার এক কাজিনের কাছ থেকে ধার করে এনে। পড়ে বেশ মজা পাই। ফলে পরবর্তীতে তার লেখা অসংখ্য বই পড়তে থাকি।

I stan বকুলাপ্পু . বকুলের সাহস , নীলা আর তার নিষ্পাপ সরল বন্ধুত্ব , আর টুশকি ..কি অসম্ভব সুন্দর সবকিছু .

ভালো ছিল তবে এটা নিয়ে দীপু নাম্বার টু এর মতো কোন সিনেমা বানালে ভালো হতো। আমাদের দেশে শিশুতোষ সিনেমার সংখ্যা কম।

চন্দ্রানদীর তীরে ছোট্ট গ্রাম পলাশপুর। সেই গ্রামের মেয়ে বকুল। পিচ্চিরা বকুলাপ্পু বলেই ঢাকে তাকে। সে গ্রামে অন্য সব মেয়েদের মতো না। সে ফুটবল খেলে। ছেলেদের ল্যাং মেরে ফেলে দেয়। গাছে চড়ে। তার মতো সাহসী মেয়ে খুব একটা নেই। গ্রামের দুরন্ত মেয়ে বকুল। অন্যদিকে ধনীর দুলালী পরীর মতো দেখতে মেয়ে নীলা। মায়ের মৃত্যুর শোক কাটিয়ে উঠতে পারেনি সে। ভয়ংকর এক রোগে আক্রান্ত হয়ে যায় সে। আস্তে আস্তে মৃত্যুর দিকে এগিয়ে যাচ্ছে নীলা। বাবা সকল চিকিৎসা শেষ করে এখন অলৌকিক কিছু ঘটে যাওয়া প্রতীক্ষা করছে। এক সময় বকুল আর নীলার মধ্যে বন্ধুত্ব হয়। এভাবে গল্প এগিয়ে যেতে থাকে। গল্প নিয়ে আর কিছু লেখা ঠিক হবে না। খুব ছোট গল্প। আমি বই এর অর্ধেক বলে ফেলেছি। বাকিটা পড়ে দেখতে পারেন। গল্পের ৭০% আমার কাছে খুবই ভালো লেগেছে। হৃদয় ছুয়ে গেছে বলা যেতে পারে। শুশুক নিয়ে চলা গল্পটা ভালো লাগেনি খুব একটা। এই জায়গায় এসে জাফর ইকবাল এর অন্য উপন্যাস গুলোর মতোই হয়ে যায়। যাইহোক ভালো গেছে গল্পটা।

I am re-reading the books I read when I was a child. This was one of them. My friend was the one who suggested this book at that time and I was grateful to her.
This book is about two twelve-year-old girls who became best friends. They were opposite from each other yet their innocent love for one another was really heart-warming. I enjoyed it. It was well=written with an adorable plot.
