The problem I saw here is a common one that I've seen in books where romance drives the plot -- how do you keep a story and its characters interesting once the couple becomes, well, a couple? Once the anticipation of the hookup is over, how do you hang on to the reader's interest? What kind of obstacles, what kind of drama will you create for them? Some authors gots what it takes to keep things going in a way that works and some just...don't.

I really liked the first part of this book (childhood friends to lovers storyline, my fave!), and I found myself being rather impressed with this author who I've never heard of before. She worked the sexual tension like a pro -- the playful banter, the underlying chemistry, the growing insecurity, anxiousness, the butterflies…it was awesome! The will-they-won’t-they dance was choreographed beautifully, things built tantalizingly slowly and it was absolutely delicious. I enjoyed it all immensely and really, I was thinking this would be a solid 4 star read for awhile there.

And then, the moment finally comes – they hook up. They are together, they are in love, it is rainbows and ponies and ice cream.

And cheese. Lots and lots of cheese. Blech. Seriously, I was caught off guard with how suddenly the writing turned to crap. The sexy times where cringe-worthy, the dirty talk was laughable (I seriously laughed a lot.) And as a couple, Robbie and Luc were utterly bland and had ZERO chemistry.

And then there was that problem I mentioned above. That BIG problem. I can picture myself as the author at this point – I’m looking at my computer screen and thinking, “Oh crap! I barely have 100 pages! I can’t call this a novel and sell it as such with just 100 pages! It needs to be at least like...twice that long! What do I do now???”

I’ll tell you what she did now. She filled the remainder of her story with shit. Stinky, stinky shit.

So okay. There's the cheating. (I'm not gonna spoiler tag that cuz it says it in the author's note right by the blurb.) But you know what? That wasn't even the problem for me. You know what the problem was? When I reached that part in the book where I was supposed to feel angry rage towards our flawed hero...I didn't. I felt annoyed in the way that it happened , but I wasn't angry. I wasn't hurting for our heroine, and I wasn't feeling sick about the infidelity.

Because I just didn't fucking care.

You're gonna turn your characters into depthless paper cut-outs then this is what happens. Deal with it. The cheating didn't even feel like real drama, especially with the way it was practically glossed over as the REAL obstacle in their relationship came to the forefront:

This ended up being such a stupid book. I don't recommend it.

I know this book has a lot of controversy surrounding it, especially with the cheating story line, that is what drew me to it. You might call me crazy I like the angst of the cheater plot and the heart break it brings, but usually I like my cheater plots to have a little justification such as; they weren't together at the time, misunderstanding, evil other woman, the H or h jump to the wrong conclusion and therefore it isn't actually cheating. Plus there has to be remorse, big groveling and forgiveness. I have found many books on Amazon discussion, "Don't Shoot Me" for my cheater plots and have loved many of them.

Besides the cheating this story had a lot of elements that I usually love: lots of hardships growing up that break your heart, H&h are orphans together, the tough mean boy becomes protector the vulnerable younger girl, friends to lovers. All of these elements together did not work for me this time. It started out great, but I grew to dislike Luc and I couldn't stop it and I felt Robbie became weak.

This is the most cheating I have ever read in a book and it didn't sit well with me. I know the author was trying to justify it, but I didn't buy it...it was to after the fact.

That all being said I will keep looking for my OW, Jealousy, cheater books because I do enjoy them once in awhile, but this one just didn't work for me.

Reread December 2023

Robbie and Luc met when they were twelve years old...both ending up in foster care for different reasons. Luckily, they got to stay with the same foster parents for four years and that helped cement a lifelong bond. Little does Luc know but Robbie has always loved him.

My heart went out to Robbie right away. It was so sad what she had to go through. And then she meets Luc. I loved seeing their interactions as they grew up. It was really sweet how Luc always took care of Robbie and when you look back on things, you see that Robbie was always taking care of Luc as well.

Another book that needs a warning: That killed me but you know it's going to happen. And later on when you get more information, well, I'm still not okay with it. Luc still knew what he was doing even if things were "fuzzy" and what happened to using a condom?? When I went back to reread some things, I came upon this line:

"For the first time in weeks, he felt alive and vital."

Well, that was only the week after Robbie went to San Diego so that makes things even worse. I do get the abandonment issues but he needed to talk things out with Robbie.

Payten?? what a witch!!! Ugh...I don't think I've ever hated a character more!! Everything you could think a character would do, she did and that made things unrealistic. It was just too extreme. But thank goodness, she came to a happy ending.

Lizbeth was my favorite character. She was just too funny and such a great best friend. I loved when she did this:

“Were you eavesdropping?” “Hell, yeah. Spying too!”

I'm glad how things worked out for her and Conrad (who was also great by the way).

All in all, a great love story even with a few unrealistic moments. And if your version doesn't have an epilogue, she posted one on her website:

♥ “Let me show you, Robbie,” he murmured, his kisses raining down between her breasts. He got on his knees and looked up at her. “Let me show you how much I love you.”

I have never in my life been more weird-ed out. And really kind of sad.

The couple was…wrong-ish. Even thou the hero was made out of some good stuff, I liked the heroine more from the very start.
I know he was tricked. I know he was set up. I know he was adamant about not being interested in anybody else and I know he would have never made the first move without what the other woman did.
I know.
And I sympathize. For that.
But I do not for all the other times. I wanted to make myself forgive him, but every time he picked up the phone and not told the OW no, every time he went to Payten after he talked to Robbie, he just became a little more irredeemable.
I am not even having this much of a problem with his care after Payten lied she was pregnant. I can understand a man not being able to distinguish how to care for a child separately from its mother. I do. But I don't see it as the cause for Robby leaving him again. I see it as an extension of a problem. That problem being his connection to Payten.
Even if it was fabricated in the beginning, even thou she prayed on his weaknesses, the bottom line was-most of it were his decisions. He played house. He went along with the sex. Nothing with the OW was a one time occurrence. It was a full fledged relationship AFTER he finally hooked up with the love of his life and DURING his relationship with her. I don’t care how lonely he was. I don't care what and why. And I don't even care if he hurt. Because this showed how he lashed out when hurt. Even if the hurt was self-inflicted. And I can’t see him as completely redeemable. The author wanted him to be. This is why she made his first step in to adultery a forced one. But I am just sorry. His cameos told me about his connection to Robbie but I just saw the way he used whipped cream with some other chick that practically moved in with him. On the other hand, he found dating the love of his life foreign and strange because he never did it before.
Well, after reading it all, I still do not have the wish to stick around and find out what more bad decisions he can make. And being such a bundle of weird thought processes and insecurities he is going to fuck up again. It may not be cheating, but something is bound to happen. And something is again going to be coming first instead of Robbie.
So…I wish this story did not have a happy ending. Because there are flawed heroes and there are people you just can take back.

This book reminded me of ‘Doing the right thing’ by Barbara Elsborg. Only that author made me smile when the heroine found true happiness WITH ANOTHER HERO.
This is just a story about falling back on to second best because of something that was between you. Yes, some loves are strong forever. But this just reminds me of women that stay with their high school boyfriends. Not out of love, but because they think there is nobody else out there or maybe they wont find him in time for the whole nine yards of children and white picket fences.
All this said, the book was written well and entertaining. I am bumping back stars because of the hero that could not explain his actions for real and did not grovel.
(sliding a engagement ring on a girl in a coma is just not enough. Especially if the coma patient is in the hospital because the crazy person you cheated with tried to kill her)
For those who like broken loves with second chances and all around drama in their love stories, this is the book for you.

P.S. The uber, over the top villainess was just weird. We can say crazy, and we can say 'Wow! Look out, here comes Predator-only with a tutu!' On the other hand, I wish I read a book with reversed roles, with a crazy villain that nobody can see trough. There are some semblance of this in other books but never does the heroine….you know…cheat. I am tired of all heroines being chaste. The one in this story included.

My Thoughts:
Simply...I LOVED THIS BOOK. Ms. Palliata did such a beautiful job transforming Robbie and Luc's relationship through their tween, teen, and adult years. The transitions were simple and smooth and the reader was able to clearly understand and appreciate the depth of their emotions and the strength of their relationship as it developed over time.

I will not go into the details of the story because I want future readers to be pleasantly surprised...and you will be. Robbie and Luc are such interesting and complex characters, as is their relationship. Their relationship was very reminiscent of those of the H/h in Fifty Shades of Grey and Beautiful Disaster. Make no mistake, this is not a copy and paste deal. Palliata did not just transfer the concept of their broken relationships to her characters. No, what she did was far more interesting and unique...with a twist. Boy, with a twist.

I found the primary characters were extremely likable. I bit my nails for them up to the very end but was rooting for them the whole time. They desperately needed a HEA. The secondary characters supported the story very well. The villianess was truly vile and detestable. I absolutely hated her. She was very well written.

Excellent story!

Update 4-19-12
So, with some prompting from readers, Ms. Palliata wrote an epilogue to Robbie and Luc's story. It nicely summed up their relationship and resolved outstanding issues that may have caused angst among some readers. In it we see growth in Luc and complete trust in him from Robbie. Simply, it was outstanding!

With mixed reviews I wasn’t sure what to expect. What I got was a compelling story that pissed me off but I wasn’t able to stop reading. I hate romance built on misunderstanding but there was no way around it. It however was worth the read. I don’t regret it.

RATING EDITED TO INCLUDE ADDED EPILOGUE

I really liked the first half of this book and STRONGLY HATED the second half... except for the epilogue which was wonderful.

Luc and Robbie meet as foster kids when they are placed in the same home together at age 12 and they grow up first becoming friends and then eventually in their early 20s, lovers. But then in waltzed a (literally) psychotic blond bitch of a lawyer who single-handedly completely and utterly f*cks up pretty much every aspect of their life (we're talking ). I have no problem with books with obstacles being thrown in for the main couple. But this was just too much for me. And I draw the line at . BUT the author added in an epilogue that did redeem a lot of Luc's actions in my eyes especially since

My original rating of 2 stars has been adjusted to 2.5 because despite everything, Robbie and Luc did love each other a lot. Luc especially was pretty messed up by his childhood. But for a hero character, it went a little too far into the messed-up side of the line for me. But I did absolutely love the first half of the book, I loved Robbie and Luc together. I loved seeing them grow up and grow closer as they got older.... But with the way the second half of the book panned out, I'd want to give that part 0 stars. I just hated the total f*cking up of their lives.. The added epilogue did help a lot with the sting of the second half of the book, but it still didn't sit completely right with me.

All this aside though, the author has a wonderful writing style that just sucks you right into the story and makes you keep wanting to turn the pages even if all you really want to do if throw your book/ereader at the wall and/or reach in and throttle the characters. I didn't like the plot of this book, but I'm still looking forward to reading more of her books.

Lets put it this way, if her writing didn't make me feel so strongly for the characters, I probably wouldn't be as mad at them lol

**4 1/2 stars**

Talk about an angsty/emotional romance! I've always told my GR friends that i love a book with all sorts of emotional ups and downs as long as i get my HEA in the end to make up for the HELL an author puts me through and Jolyn Palliata did not disappoint on either count!

This book felt like a mix of a few favorites...it had the sweetness of The Sweet Gum Tree (when they're growing up together, Luc takes Robbie under his wing, even when they're older, he's still always looking out for her!)...A Beautiful Disaster (Luc is def. a grouchy alpha male that borders on being a jerk and doesn't sugar coat things for anyone..except to Robbie, of course..~sigh~)...and How To Kill A Rock Star (all the emotional drama that ensues when one of them makes an AWFUL choice and the horrible repercussions that follow from that stupid stupid decision!!!)

I sort of knew going into this book what might happen and normally that would make me shy away from ever reading it but i was still curious enough that i wanted to experience it first hand and i'm soooo glad i did! In my honest opinion, if an author is able to make the reader feel all the heart wrenching moments as if they're their own, have their heart racing in anticipation of what's to come next, whether it be from the romance or the suspense, even if she's able to make them feel the anger...and boy was i ANGRY!...that is a sign that an author has done her job...and done it well!

Anyone who is looking for a book packed with lots of emotion, lots of drama, a little bit of suspense and a really sweet romance should definitely check this book out!

Robbie Byrne and Lucian Anthony Cintrone (Luc) come into each other’s lives when they are both 12 years old. Robbie becomes a part of the foster care system when both her parents die in an accident traumatizing her for life. Luc, who has been a part of the system for far too long after being abandoned by his parents is the rebellious sort, the one who uses cuss words in every sentence and has an attitude a mile wide.

Over the years, Robbie and Luc’s relationship grows, the crush that materializes on Robbie’s part from the time they both turn 14 which escalates and grows as time progresses. Though Luc might not want to acknowledge the attraction that flares between them from that very tender age, he is not as immune towards Robbie as he might like to think he is. Jealousy and possessiveness all foreign concepts to a man like Luc are emotions that hit him hard when it comes to Robbie though Luc does a swell job out of keeping himself at arm’s length time and yet again.

When both Robbie and Luc hit 22 years of age, that is when things turn around and all the pent up longing and sexual attraction that fairly sizzles the pages practically explodes giving one of the best against-the-door-smexing scenes I have read in a long, long while! Luc makes every scene come alive with his dark and broody nature of which I just simply could not get enough!

Things take a turn for worse when a woman who has her sight set on attaining Luc as her own enters the picture and manipulates both Robbie and Luc well enough until she drives a wedge through their relationship that seems an impossibility to heal from until towards the very end.

Though Jolyn Palliata is a totally new-to-me author, this was a book that I couldn’t possibly think of putting down once I picked it up. The words flow smoothly, the characters totally invade into your heart and the story just grabs you from the very start until all I could think about was Luc, Luc and Luc some more! I found myself thinking about Luc’s character at odd moments, something that happens to me only when a story has managed to totally bewitch me in all aspects.

There is an element of infidelity and cheating on Luc’s part in the story. For some readers, I am sure this would be a total turn-off when it comes to the world of romance because they want everything to perfectly align in their hero and heroine’s world. But for me, I have total respect and love for an author who pushes the boundaries and safe-limits when it comes to writing romances and I loved the way Jolyn managed to give the story that extra punch by creating Luc the way he is and bringing him truly to life by making him true to his character.

Now some might think based on that statement that Luc is not the hero material. But you couldn’t be further from the truth. There are so many endearing traits to him that I just can’t help but sigh over him even now. Luc might be a bit of an asshole, rude and taciturn when it comes to dealing with the rest of the world, but when it comes to Robbie, he is a totally different man. It takes one who sits on the sidelines and quietly observes him to see the difference, the nuances of the expressions that cross his face whenever Robbie enters the room.

The way Luc wants to take things slow, to romance Robbie and give her everything that her heart desires was such a lovely aspect of the story and Luc’s character. He definitely enters uncharted waters when it comes to romance and love but that doesn’t stop him from wanting to give Robbie those things and more! And when it comes to breaking Robbie’s heart, he does it in the same style as well, with no holds barred, giving me the deepest sort of grief throughout those couple of chapters.

You can’t read A Modern Love Story and not be captivated by Robbie. She is the type of heroine that you fall in love with and never stop even after you are done reading. Selfless and giving is what she is all about and I loved her to bits from the very start. Her total understanding of Luc and where all his issues stem from gives her that extra edge and the way she totally and absolutely melts in Luc’s embrace just made me sigh every single time!

The only thing that made me bring the rating down by 1 star was the fact that I felt that the last couple of chapters focused more on the ‘villain’ rather than Luc and Robbie and that didn’t sit that well with me. And the lack of an epilogue is very much felt when you reach the end and want to see and witness the happily ever after of a couple that goes through some pretty rough and tough times to finally come out as the winners.

I would highly recommend A Modern Love Story to anyone who can take romances that pushes your comfort zone. If you love a hero who is uber-alpha, possessive to the max with the ability to melt you with just one searing look, you need not look any further than Luc himself! Trust me, he is definitely all that and more!

Rating=4/5

THIS STARTS OUT OKAY, BUT THEN IT GETS CRAZY

Luc and Robbie were both foster children, and spent many years living with a great couple the Lawsons. Even when they became adults they remained close. Robbie (she's the girl) has always been in love with Luc, though he seemed oblivious to that, and Robbie didn't want to push it and lose what they did have.

Then about 40% in Luc starts to realise what Robbie means to him. He is part owner in a bar, with his best friend Conrad, things are coming together for him. His business is doing well he has Robbie. Then suddenly everything in the story goes crazy. Payton a high powered lawyer meets Luc for five minutes and decides she wants him. She's prepared to do anything to get him, and I mean anything.

I started to wonder if Luc actually had any brains whatsoever, why Robbie bothered with him was beyond me. His behaviour was unforgivable IMO. It's a massive turn off for me when the hero cheats. I lost all interest after that. I don't mind a bit of angst, but this far exceeded that. So what started out okay just got too ridiculous with all the melodrama and outlandish and unbelievable events that moved the story forward.

Wow...what a trainwreck that I could not stop reading. Started sweet in the first half then OW was brought in and boy was she evil. She paid someone to pretend to be the h's long-lost uncle to get her out of town. All bc she wanted the H. And the H cheated...there were many explicit scenes btw H/OW. But no worries, we are supposed to forgive him bc OW confessed to having drugged him so he would lose his inhibitions. Yep, the writer is blaming drugs for his excessive cheating with OW. Then...evil OW fakes a pregnancy to keep H/h from being happy. H finds out (OW is infertile so no way the bitch is preggers) says he's thru with her, h finds out about the fake uncle, she goes to OW's house alone who is laying in wait to kill her!!! Turns out OW is truly psycho as she had killed her own father previously!!! H arrives to save the h, then HEA...total trainwreck. H was great in the beginning until all the cheating...still unsure if it was all due to drugging by OW but whatever. The h was likable and forgave him. Read if you like crazy cheating stories.

This author dares to venture where most authors would never dream of traveling: deep into your darkest fears and horrors while in a relationship. She brings them to life in 3D-IMAX and forces you to face them head on and in your face. This book will take you from giddily in love to insanely infuriated & homicidal in the matter of a page or two...not that you don't see something coming, but not THAT. Having said the above, all is not lost. Far from it, for we find out that, as in real life, things are not as they seem. Desperate people take desperate, pitiful measures to get what they want. Add unlimited monetary resources to that desperation and you get Payten. But never fear, because, as it should in real life (but often doesn't), true love conquers all! I really enjoyed this story, and loved the emotions and situations it invoked. Everyone should read this and take the expedition this author has created. Thanks Jolyn!

I have never—EVER—finished a book with absolutely no idea how to rate it, until now. I am waffling back and forth and decided on breaking the book down into parts and averaging to get my rating. Let’s see where this takes me.

Characters: 5 stars. Robby and Luc are two of the most well developed characters I’ve read. I loved the back story (probably my favorite part of the book). I feel like I know these characters inside and out. I get their motivation for everything that happened. I understand their feelings and I felt everything right along with them. Even when I hated Luc (believe me, at times you will hate him equally as much as you love him) I understood how he could have made the mistakes he did (doesn’t mean I liked it though).

Romance: First half of the book: 5 stars. The first half of the book is probably one of the sweetest love stories I’ve read. I love that Robby and Luc knew each other from the time they were 12. I love how Luc looked out for her (the incident when she was 16 is when I fell in love with him). They were two lost kids who had tragedy strike so young and had only each other to rely on.

Second half of the book: 1 star. The second half, the romance goes to shit. The drama that takes place in the last 40% of the book is intense. It’s extreme. It’s painful to read at times. If I was rating the book on the dramatic aspect I would give it 5 stars. However, it took away from and completely overshadowed the romance at the end. I still wanted the two to get together, but I was so angry at Luc. What he did devalued their relationship for me and took away from the sweet romance that was developed earlier.

Writing: 5 stars. The book is definitely well written. I’ve read another book from this author as well (it was a 5 star read) and I definitely like her writing style. Not only that, the book is engaging. I promise you will not get bored. The storyline that evolves will evoke so many feelings as you read: grief, happiness, disappointment, happiness, anger, frustration, more disappointment, anxiety, and then back to happiness again. It’s a roller coaster ride, and definitely interesting.

So, averaging the ratings from each part leaves me with 4 stars overall. If you are looking to read a straight romance, no drama, then this is not the book for you. I will say one thing; it definitely isn’t a cookie cutter contemporary romance. If you want a gritty, emotional, dramatic story where the love is tested to the extreme, but eventually wins out in the end, then you’ll love this book.

3.5 stars.

This was actually a book I couldn’t put down. The writing wasn’t top notch but the storyline was excellent! The relationship between the leads was very sweet. Watching them fall in love from childhood to adulthood was fragrant to watch. Then out of nowhere comes the sick and twisted other woman who did whatever it took to get her paws on the hero and succeeded to some extent, so expect cheating if you are interested in reading this book. That took some of the sugar away from all that sweetness! It is definitely not a boring book I’ll tell you that. I love books like these that keep you on your toes throughout.

The reason why this didn’t make it to 4 stars is the writing itself. I feel that the author has potential because she knows how to tell a story but she needs a little more experience. The writing veered to amateur. It's not so bad that it can't be read, but it definitely needs improvement. If she gets better at writing I think this author will be a big hit if she continues to tell compelling stories like these that has emotions running.

Another thing that was really annoying to me but probably won’t bother other readers is the fact that in almost every other sentence the Lords name was being used with a curse word attach to it. It was very distracting to me as a reader because it offended me. I know it was my choice to continue reading it, and I did, so I can’t say much there, but I wanted to warn anyone else that might find that offensive. All in all though, this book was a page turner.

A Modern Love Story is one of my all time favorite cheating hero book.

Okay, it's been a while since I read this- but I remember staying up so late to just finished it. It sucked me in right from the beginning. This was another book that I have a love/hate relationship with. It triggered a lot of emotions in me that after reading it- I felt so drained!

Robbie and Luc's story was amazing. I loved seeing them grow up and discover their feelings for one another. The sexual tension kept me on the edge. Both characters are likeable.

Luc was great until he cheated. lol. As much as I love a cheating hero, I was mad when he did it! My mind was shouting "nooooooo!!!!"

I disliked Payten so much. She's the perfect villain! What a psycho woman and I don't think I've disliked a character as much as I disliked Payten. Ms. Palliata did a wonderful job on creating her and I have to admit that if not for Payten, the book itself would be ordinary.

I give this a 5 stars. If you're looking for a good love story with cheating hero, steamy sex, angst and suspense- I highly recommend this!

WOW, WOW, WOW... What an absolutely fabulous book! All romance fans need to read this story, you won't be disappointed!

It is the story of foster kids, Luc and Robbie, who are thrown together in a foster placement having both experienced distressing starts in their young lives, and having moved around from placement to placement. They spend several years with each other living with the 'Ls', the foster family where their relationship begins to grow. Over the years they become so close, and like family to one another, but don't realise (to begin with) that their love for one another actually runs much deeper than just friends.

This is a most beautifully written story that shows the adversities and challenges that confront this young couple in their lives, and how they manage to overcome them. It highlights the ups and downs of learning to trust and respect each other, and that no matter how severe troubles might be love and determination can conquer all. It talks of obsessions, hardships, happiness, lust, longing, all those angsty things that might plague relationships, but all of those feelings are portrayed in an insightful way that leave the reader wanting more.

There were times when I felt like I just wanted to 'whap' Luc round the head for being so stupid, but the author always seemed able to make the reader see both sides of a story and have the character redeem himself. It was great to get into the head of Luc (and the other characters) a bit and I really seemed to be able to feel what they were going through most of the time. The characters are so likeable, and I felt really connected with them and drawn into their world.

There were lots of interesting twists, and some that I still didn't fathom out until really near the end! There was a great balance of 'world building', character setting and development, that just made the writing flow effortlessly. The secondary characters were also interesting, I hated the evil 'baddie', and loved the supportive friends Lisbeth and Conrad (how about writing their story Jolyn LOL)? If I had any criticism it would be that the ending crept up too soon, an epilogue might have been nice, but maybe that's just a 'need' I had to find out more as I got so attached to the characters LOL!

All together an amazing read that I thoroughly enjoyed and would recommend to all romance fans.

Hate to leave mainly negative reviews about a book, but there is little for me to work with here! Characters that are not very likeable, even though Robbie was kind, she was too kind! Saying she could not cut Luc the cheater out of her life! She was too spineless as well agreeing to lunch, and getting back with Luc so easily! I didn't mind loud mouth Lizabeth because atleast she had a backbone, but she soon lost that when she forgave Conrad and made a case for Luc! Luc was just an asshole plain and simple, him saying 'I love you' a handful of times makes up for nothing! He has an affair, then had the cheek to be defensive when confronted by Robbie and insulted her, calling her basically a desperate whore and never apologised! But oh wait it's not his fault at all because he is beingdrugged! Ha ha please what an afterthought to throw in that was! It is like the author realised she wrote a completely unredeemable and unlikeable hero and realised she had to throw something in to make him unaccountable for his behaviour. The drugging idea does not work. Am I meant to believe that a grown ass man who was seeing a woman for months in different circumstances was drugged every time, and did not notice? Come on. Also, the drugging does not explain him speaking to the OW on the phone constantly, keep letting her into his flat and work etc. He would have been sober many times and never got rid of her, so this idea does not work. His affair went on for months! He was not drugged all the time, he had sex with her sober, was in contact with The other woman constantly and always let her into his flat! He was a joke he treated Robbie the apparent love of his life like crap, was so self centred, talked to the other woman like rubbish consistently, but when he had the chance to prove himself he couldn't break up with the other woman because her dad died, as if he was so sensitive! What a crock! Please avoid this book! This is not a love story! It's a guide on relationships and people to avoid, with dickhead heros and spineless, wishy washy heroines!

This book put another twist on the typical love story, by giving it a childhood romance spin. It brought about the questions that come with other long term romances. Can friends become lovers and still be friends? Can long distance relationships really work? Is there a reality when it comes to childhood romance that really looks into forever?

In this story Robbie becomes an orphan when her parents are killed in a rockslide while the family is on a road trip. When the state cannot find her family she enters the foster care system. Fortunately she enters a wonderful foster family. Her foster parents, although only living with her for four years become a second set of parents to her. When she enters their home she also meets Luc, their foster son. He helps her survive and learn to live with the realities of being a foster child.

When tragedy strikes the happy foster family they are split up. As teenagers in the system they have the typical difficulties, but manage to handle things well together, as they live near one another and go to the same school.

Luc drops out of high school to get his GED and work so that he can become independent and better help Robbie.

Due to her horrible foster parent situation he helps her leave her foster home at 18 and gives her the support she needs as she transitions to college. Robbie and Luc remain friends through the entire process with an underlying sexual tension.

As the two become adults their love for one another really grows and their attraction to one another blossoms into full fledged lust. Because they don't want to ruin their relationship and because they care for each other so much they take a long time to realize the reality of their attraction and become a couple.

The book lost me after this point. I really became disappointed as the author added a strange murder mystery twist to the story with a character who murders her parents, drugs and seduces Luc, cons Robbie, and tries to kill Robbie. Although the idea of this strange twist didn't seem terrible, it just didn't seem to fit with the rest of the story.

Although the book wasn't horrible, it seemed to take a good first half of one book and connect it with the second half of an entirely different type of book.

Nice read. Really enjoyed this author and will be looking for more of her work. It didn't quite make 5 stars, but it was close. I took off 1/2 star because the author went a little too fast in places where I felt she should have slowed down and explained more.

Wow some craziness

When Robbie is 12 she is in an accident and her parents die. She is out into a foster home with Leah and Lawson. This is where she meets Lucian. They grow close and Robbie falls in love with him, he's a little slow coming too.

Move to when they get older they end up getting into a relationship and unfortunately a psycho lawyer wants Luc and goes to great lengths to assure that happens.

We all need a feisty friend like Lizbeth and even Conrad. All I have to say is don't believe all the low ratings, give it a try.

First half: 5 STARS!
Second half: 3 STARS!
Overall story: 4 STARS (3.5 STARS)

The beginning of this novel was absolutely spectacular. The first few chapters introduced different significant moments in Robbie and Luc's lives, from ages twelve to twenty. Instead of detailing every second of Robbie and Luc's childhood, Ms. Palliata covered the most important moments, focusing on the important roles that they played in one another's lives. When we first meet the characters, Luc is a foul-mouthed hellion and Robbie is a shy, scared little girl. They are complete opposites, but they share a unique connection and they form a bond stronger than steel.

I absolutely loved the first half of this story. It was emotional, comical, romantic, and most importantly, realistic. It reminded me of one of my favorite novels, That Boy by Jillian Dodd. At the halfway mark, I was fully prepared to give this novel a 5 STAR rating.

The second half of this novel was good, but it wasn't as good as the beginning. It was entertaining, but it was also over dramatic and unbelievable. After Palliata introduces the characters backgrounds, she catches up to present day time when Robbie is twenty-two-years old. For me, this is where things started to go downhill. At first, it seemed like Robbie and Luc were finally going to get their acts together and find happiness, but then crazy drama and outside forces a.k.a.psycho Payten intervened.

Payten. On one hand, Ms. Palliata did a wonderful job creating the perfect villain. Heck, I don't think I've ever disliked a character as much as I disliked Payten. The little home-wrecker got to me. She made me angry; she put me in a bad mood. I think it's a pretty powerful thing when a character can affect your mood to the point that you want to punch things. I didn't enjoy being in a bad mood, but I did appreciate the fact that I was affected because I cared so much about the characters and the story. On the other hand, Payten's behavior was over the top, too freaking crazy for words. Her behavior made a realistic, relatable story unrealistic and unrelatable. In my opinion, she brought this story down a little. I think I would have rated this story much higher if she would have been a little less crazy.

Another thing that lowered my rating for this novel was the ending. I'm not saying that it's a bad ending. I'm not saying that it's not a happy ending. All I am saying is that I was disappointed. After all of that crazy drama, I wanted more. I probably would have rated this novel higher if it would have had an epilogue.

I gave A Modern Love Story by Jolyn Palliata 4 STARS (3.5 STARS)! A Modern Love Story was an addicting story full of drama, romance, and suspense. I recommend this novel to mature young adults.

-XOXO

This book started off quite sweet & romantic - but gradually transformed into a melodrama with very soap opera-ish ending (SPOILER ALERT!!!! Don't read if you don't want it spoiled for you). I mean how many books can you read where the hero realizes he can't live without the heroine only to have her almost dying in his arms - and then comes the moment of epiphany & tears...

Anyway, so we have Robbie (honestly, giving her guy name was just weird - I kept forgetting ROBBIE / ROB was the heroine of the book) & Lucian/Luc, who are foster kids with the same foster parents. They grow up together and while they've always loved each other, neither chooses to acknowledge this (and save us load of reading time). Both patiently wait for the other to take the first initiative, which is kinda chickenshit (load of swearing from the hero so pardon my comparatively tame language) if you ask me.

So after 10 whole years of pining for each other, and sleeping with random people (I might be a prude, but if I always knew that certain someone was my significant other & I was totally in love with him/her, I doubt I'll be sleeping with / losing my virginity to inconsequential people - maybe that's why it's a "MODERN" love story!), they finally decide to put us out of our misery.

But they can't just get together & live happily ever after so soon - so we get a villain (a rich, highflying lawyer) who sees the hero (a bartender / part bar owner) only once & decides that he's hers. Even though he's so rude to her... And you won't believe the lengths & expenditure she goes through to get him; if I had that much money, I doubt I'd go on a murderous spree just to snag a bar-owner - no matter how hot he is.

Blown away! Awesome romance! Another favorite from Jolyn Palliata!

Description:
After the death of her parents, Robbie Byrne is put in foster care where she meets her exact opposite, Luc Cintrone. Abandoned as a small child, Luc is a foul-mouthed rebel who takes it upon himself to be her defender, whether she likes it or not. And she is fairly confident Luc will eventually see things her way…one way or another

My Thoughts:
It is hard to critique a book that pulls at your heart, makes so mad you want to toss the book against the wall (poor ereader), makes you want to pull out Peyton's hair and slap her silly, makes you want to hug and yell at the hero at the same time. Beneath all this is a depth of love rarely reached. This totally unpredictable book has more twists and turns than a roller coaster. The originality of the story and characters who you not only sympathize with but get to the point where you are empathizing with them. This writer was new to me with this book and I certainly hope she writes more, her talent should not be hidden. Look out Ms James there is a new kid on the block.

A solid 5 stars and I can't wait to read more books by this talented author!

First off I want to say that this book tugged at all my emotions; sorrow, empathy, laughter, ANGER, lust....Robbie loses her parents at the age of 12 in a rock slide and enters the Foster system. There she is lucky enough to be placed with the L's and meet Luc, another foster child. This sets up a lifetime spent in each other's company. I love the way Ms. Palliata sets the scenes in the years until the children become young adults. Jumping every two years to show how their relationship is forming & growing.

The first half of the book had me completely in love with both Robbie & Luc. The second half is where all the angst begins and I can't remember the last time that I was so angry at characters in a book that I literally wanted to KILL someone or someones. WELL DONE Jolyn that you made me feel so much about people who DON'T exist. I loved Lizbeth - what an amazing friend Robbie has in her. I would recommend this book to everyone.

All I can say about Payten

Spare yourself from an overly anxious read and extreme eye rolling from an unbelievable story. This one will drive you crazy. OTT angst. Living in a foster home at 12 yrs old Luc/Robbie grow extremely close and have a bond of friendship/love that grows. They finally admit their attraction 10 years later, act on it very briefly only to be torn apart by the chick with an evil plot to destroy their relationship to have Luc to herself. This is where I started speed reading because psycho Peyton's antics are ridiculously unbelievable (drugs, murder, etc). All I wanted to know was when it would end and were Luc/Robbie going to get any real time together? The answer, sure, at the last page of the bk. I can't fathom all the great reviews for this bk when there are so many other worthwhile reads. Skip this one.

Ugh...I felt like I was watching one of those movies on Lifetime. Let me tell you, the cheating aspect didn't bother me at all, it's pretty much why I picked up the booked.

But what I got was a whole lot of crazy. I like to think I can suspend my belief in books like no other...I mean I love fae and vampires...can't spend my belief much more than that. I have to say it though, this book was beyond dumb. The characters...terrible. The only one I could feel anything for was the crazy bitch Payten. Her character really shined through.

Luc and Robbie...no. I didn't believe their love for a second. Um, if you're even half way curious about the book, I'd say try it out. You might end up liking it way more than me.
