Saksalainen Walter Moers (s. 1957) on kirjailija, sarjakuvapiirtäjä, kuvataiteilija ja kuvanveistäjä, jonka omaperäinen maailma lumoaa kaikenikäiset. Rumo Ylämaailmassa – Pimeyden ihmeet 1 ilmestyi suomeksi syksyllä 2005.

About the author

Walter Moers was born in 1957 and is a writer, cartoonist, painter and sculptor. He has refused to be photographed ever since his comic strips The Little Asshole and Adolf were published, the latter leading him to be declared persona non grata by the political right in Germany. Walter Moers lives in Hamburg.

oh walter moers, i adore you.

revisiting rumo after almost 20 years feels so good. i remember preferring the first volume but this time around i liked this more, even though i liked the first one a lot as well.

rumo is a wonderfully grumpy dude who beneath all that grumpiness and violence is driven by his heart, love and friendships. the netherworld is wonderfully bonkers world and the horrors i vividly remember hating and being disgusted by as a kid were not quite horrible now, but this book really does not lack violence. it’s definitely not a children’s book.

great characters, imaginative world building, very wild plot. i really enjoyed my time in the netherworld.

Moers is my all-time favorite in the world and of course I got what I wanted! Rumo Alimaailmassa continues perfectly the series and gives it a grand final. Rumo ends up in a village full of just Wolpertings and finds himself at home and even falls in love. But, our hero is too shy and thus decides to make a casket for his love to prove his feelings. During that adventure the people from Hel abduct all the Wolpertings to Overworld to be slaves and fight on a death arena. Rumo decides to save them all, but as you know Moers, it's never going to be what you expect. There's death, blood and glory! Maniacs, soldiers and crazy kings! Everything you could hope for when it comes to dark and odd adventure that's really not for kids and is at the same time. The end fight is something out of this world and Moers gives life to everything in detail and so well you cannot put the book down.

The language is perfect once again and the Finnish translation is miraculous. My only thought was that perhaps this could've been one book or the books could've have more plot in them. Or! Even better, more books to tell even more stories! I would've wanted to know what happened to Smeik and others during Rumo's adventures. I'm so happy and amazed we have Moers' books in Finnish, since they are out of this world and we never get so perfect books here like these. I'm eternally grateful for Moers' stories and I'd love to read more! MORE!

Rumon seikkailu jatkuu Alimaailmassa Ylämaailman jälkeen. Teos on jännittävä ja nuorten kirjaksi hyvin väkivaltainen. Taistelun ja väkivallan ihannointi menee välillä jo tahallisesti yli. Teoksessa on edellisten Moersien tapaan paljon intertekstuaalisuutta muun muassa Odysseiaan ja gladiaattoritaisteluihin. Myös edellisen osan monet tarinat saavat merkityksensä vasta tässä, joten teokset todella kannattaa lukea peräjälkeen ja silti tuntuu, ettei kaikkia yksityiskohtia enää muista tarpeeksi hyvin. Tunnelma tiivistyy erityisesti teoksen loppupuolella, jolloin kerronta hyppii useamman tapahtumapaikan välillä vuorotellen kertoen eri hahmojen vaiheista aina hetken kerrallaan.

Paikoittain suorastaan raaka kirja ei ole aivan yhtä hyvä kuin ensimmäinen osa, mutta viihdyttävä silti. Moersin mielikuvitus on uskomaton ja hieman Rowlingmainen uusiosanojen käyttö paikoittain loistavaa. Myös kirjan viittaukset muihin kirjoihin ja samantyylisen juonen käyttäminen kuin Sinikarhussa on hauska huomata. Harkitsen vahvasti gradun tekemistä Moersin kirjoista. Erittäin hyvä kirja.

Samaan sarjaan kuuluvien kirjojen yhdessä puolisoni kanssa lukemisen jälkeen tuntuu vaikealta siirtyä kokonaan uuteen kirjaan ja maailmaan. Zamonian jutut ovat olleet osa arkipuhettamme kotona pari kuukautta, Moersin kirjat ovat oivia tuottamaan sisäpiirivitsejä lukijoilleen. Seuraava yhteislukuprojektimme ei näillä näkymin ole fantasiakirja, joten ehkä Moerisismit jäävät elämään vielä joksikin aikaa.

It feels like I've been invited into a world full of interesting creatures with unique characters. A well-crafted story where logic-defying moments and science come into play. I love it!
