PowerUp! #4

Fortune's Favor

Rate this book
Nathan Kraft needs more than the life he's currently living. Once an agent for the Psychic Warfare Program, he's now reduced to helping civilians get in shape at the PowerUp! gym, where his buddies and he continue to train their minds in secret. He's always up for some excitement, in the form of a job or a man, but lately he's getting neither. Then he's assigned a job, one like he used to do for the government, except this job involves his past.

Avery Holton has butted heads with Nathan since they first met a year ago when he joined the staff of the PowerUp! gym. Nathan gets impressions from touching objects. Avery sees the future. Nathan is fun, loves men, and craves adventure like a drug. Avery likes discipline, is quiet but not closeted about his bisexuality, and does the job like a professional, a carryover from his days in the Marine Corps. Thrust together on a mission that links to Nathan's childhood, the pair will have to learn to trust each other. It will take all their psychic skills and an acceptance of their growing love to defeat an evil out to get Nathan and everyone he loves...before it's too late.

The Romance Review

Are you ready for some hot m/m sexual tension? In FORTUNE'S FAVOR, Nathan and Avery heat up the pages with their desire and denial for each other. Avery's psychic gift is foresight. He's partnered up with Nathan to find a killer who also has psychic abilities. Both Nathan and the killer Malcolm possesses psychometry. This is the ability to read an object's history. This would make sense as they are related.

Book four of the Power Up! Series continues to reveal a bit more of the now defunct government psychic division. Ms. Harte is stingy in her information disbursement. We do learn there are hidden agendas Jack, Nathan and Avery's boss, keeps from the team. In addition, the secret client funding Jack's team of psychic investigators is someone none of them expected. This adds to the mystery and makes me want to learn more about this world.

Back to the smexy hot former military man, Avery. Avery is the straight and narrow soldier who gives off hot Dom vibes. Avery is not straight; he's actually quietly bisexual which is good for me because it means women still have a chance with a hot guy like him. He's smart, caring and used to giving orders. I shiver in anticipation of his orders to Nathan.

Nathan is the flaunting gay slut. Or at least that is how he used to behave. He's good looking and he knows it. His reputation of sleeping with any guy is well earned. When he decides to make a change, not many believe his change of heart. I find it a bit skeptical too. Nathan is a hot mess due to his baggage. His history is tangled up and it takes two psychics to unravel the knots. The answers are easy for the reader to predict yet the impact is no less severe or depressing. It's rather sad and for me, it's a commentary on how a person can be used and abused by their company until they become a liability to everyone around them.

The suspense part of this paranormal romance aside, the romance part is hot and smexy. When Nathan and Avery finally get together, I'm fanning myself from the heat. Ms. Harte writes hot sex and when she uses two dominant males fighting for the alpha position, the rough sex has me happily devouring every word. But there is more than just physical fun between the two. The relationship development from partners to friends then lovers is sweet and the right kind of bromance I enjoy. I recommend this m/m paranormal romance to those who enjoy a bit of suspense and sad circumstances.

Fortune’s Favor is the fourth in Marie Harte’s Power Up series of psychically enhanced agents for the government.

A year after the program is disbanded; the former government agents are all working in a gym in Bend, OR. Funded by an unknown benefactor, they’re sent on jobs to retrieve stolen artifacts that have psychic or mystical ability.

Nathan is the playboy, whose sex life is a revolving door of men. But with his history, he doesn’t want to get too close to anyone. And he’s been lusting after someone in his unit for sometime now, but he’s not gay, so there’s no hope there. With his ability to read items with a touch, he has to be careful not to absorb too much from the things that surround him

Avery is a by the book, always in charge kind of guy. Bi-sexual, he’s never really hidden that fact, and he’s eyed Nathan for awhile now, but with no intention of becoming part of that long list of men hopping in and out of Nathan’s bed. But he’s seen into the future and knows that he and Nathan get together, but as just lovers for a short time or more like he wants, that’s the part he can’t see.

Sent as partners on a mission to retrieve a mystically evil knife, a knife that calls for blood, this sends them back to Nathan’s home town. And into the pain of his past to find his Uncle who now has the knife in his possession, the Uncle who abused him while he was growing up. And along the way partners become more than that, they become lovers. And as Avery helps Nathan deal with the pain of his past, they move past partners, lovers, and friends and into love.

I fell in love with both of these characters. They are both so real and believable, Nathan with his easy going charm and Avery’s by the book orderly life. You knew that Avery was the perfect man to help Nathan through his past trauma with both order and love.

Nathan Kraft and Avery Holton are assigned to the same mission which is a problem because they don't get along. Their arguments usually turn into explosive bouts on the wrestling mat where both men can get out their aggressions. When they are traveling together, however, they find out more about each other and start to get along.

When a problem comes out of Nathan's past in the form of his crazed uncle, Avery and Nathan deal with it together, but Avery, a precog who sees the future, has a vision that he doesn't know if he should share with Nathan.

This is the kind of story I like, where the relationships build and it isn't insta-lust or fated attractions. At the end of the day, a relationship that takes more work just seems more believable to me.

While this series isn't amazing, I appreciate that the further in I get, the more that the plot and the psychic aspects tend to take over the story and the romance itself starts to take a bit of a backseat. There were some really neat dynamics between the villain and Nathan in this one considering shared powers are involved.

This is the first time that I have read a book written by this author and I was pleasantly surprised at how well this wonderful, intriguing MM romance was written.
This book is about: the journey of two men (Nathan) and (Avery), they both have special abilities and were previously employed by the government. Their journey to love and happiness will be filled with trials & tribulations as they go on a mission together.
What you will find in this book is: drama, intrigue, suspense, twists & turns, adventure, action, enemies, danger, verbal conflict, attraction, jealousy, memories, intimacy, visions, vulnerability, abduction, threats, physical conflict, passion, love and steamy scenes.
The characters are well developed with individual personalities. The story-line and plot is well-thought out and written. I found this MM romance, a pleasure to read and would recommend it.

Great psychic story

This is a m/m romance involving Nathan and Avery.
Nathan is in for a rude awakening. His Aunt Danielle was killed by the uncle is thought was dead. Then he found out his aunt was actually his mother.
He and Avery return to the home he lived in for several years and was abused in by his uncle. This way he could stop his uncle from killing more people with some sort of possessed sword.
There are a few inconsistencies involving the visions of the future that Avery had and the actual occurrence. Otherwise it is a great book involving battles with lust, love and pure evil.

Fortune’s Favor is the fourth in Marie Harte’s PowerUp! PNR series, and is about flirty Nathan Kraft and straightlaced Avery Holton.

Part of a paranormal team tasked with retrieving supernatural objects, they end up in the crosshairs of a power-mad killer in possession of an enchanted sword…

Fast paced and hot, this is one exciting read.

I am not into M/M books. Skimmed this to get the gist of the story and to know if anything happens to the overall group.
So cannot really say anything about Avery or Nathan as characters.

Actually 3.5 Stars

Another enjoyable quick read from the Power Up! series but this time with some marked improvements. Once again, I completely loved the characters: surly, uptight, very disciplined Avery, and Nathan, the charming playboy. They are complete opposites, yet they fit each other so well. I loved their relationship; I loved how they were such guys, sparring and wrestling one minute and sexing it up the next with them probably counting the fight as foreplay.

I just thought it was funny how Avery kept messing with Nathan's head, insulting him and riling him up to keep his head away from his troubles. Speaking of troubles, now we get to what finally got a book in this series closer to a solid 4 stars, the villain. We finally got a decent villain, and by decent, I mean completely off his rocker, three fries short of a happy meal, scary as hell bastard.

I also loved the fact that while Marie Harte shows you how this monster got to be the way he is, makes you feel sorry and sad for the man he used to be, she still makes you want to take down the man he has become hard and make him cry like a little bitch. I also loved the fact that they used sword and knife for the last fight making it feel incredibly personal, the way a gun really can't. The fight wasn't quick, with one shot and it's all over, but was drawn out dangerous and bloody. Nathan is usually an easygoing charming guy, but you mess with the love of his life, and he will mess you up.

So giving truth to the saying that a story is only as good as its villain, this book was totally kick-ass.

A Hidden Treasure!

Avery isn’t hiding but isn’t broadcasting his bisexuality. He is a military man who knows who he is but wants more and Nathan is a temptation. Nathan is addictive to everyone, easily charming his way into your heart in a moment. He has a troubled past that he tries to hide. Unfortunately that past is kicking him down over and over. Avery is there to clean him up and care for him time and time again as they hunt down the demons of Nathan’s past. It will take both of their physic powers, friendship, trust and most importantly the growing love between them to survive the evil that hunts them.

I LOVED this story! The dynamics between Nathan and Avery were fantastic. It was a GREAT storyline and love story rolled into one! It was a fast paced, exciting, hot, loving and did I say HOT, romance. I can’t enough good things about this book in the PowerUp! Series. Read it. Fast. Seriously what are you waiting for?

By far this is my favorite of the series! (so far, have yet to read the following books yet). It doesn't jump right into MCs getting it on and having sex. They are dealing with their antagonism toward each other because they've been fighting their attraction.

First impression I had was that Nathan was the slighter bigger and 'top' personality but in fact Avery is the more dominant force. After Avery breaks down and finally shows Nathan his true self (a bi-male vs strictly straight) they start slowly connecting. While the sex is hot, the feelings are on slow burn and building in intensity. Add in the mix of mystery with Nathan's aunt being his mother and his 'uncle' coming after him and WHY to lead.. me, at least, to an awesome read.

Fortune's Favor is book 4 in the excellent PowerUp! series by Marie Harte. I think MH is one of the best authors I've come across when it comes to M/M stories.

This is Avery & Nathan's story.
The story, as you would expect from MH, is fast paced and full of adventure!! Nathan Kraft is a charmer - too much of one at times - and Avery Holton is there, time after time, to pick him up and try to help him get himself back together.
The build up and deepening of the guys relationship as we work our way through the book makes for an hot, interesting & emotional read.

Next in the series is Flight of Fancy.

The storyline was solid and pulling, but I have to admit the way it started, it was to bitchy for my taste. Nathan was, gosh a brat, but okay he was emotionally messed up. I really liked a stable character like Avery. He was smart, sexy and in charge.
