Poems, such as "Dover Beach" (1867), of British critic Matthew Arnold express moral and religious doubts alongside his Culture and Anarchy , a polemic of 1869 against Victorian materialism.

Matthew Arnold, an English sage writer, worked as an inspector of schools. Thomas Arnold, the famed headmaster of rugby school, fathered him and and Tom Arnold, his brother and literary professor, alongside William Delafield Arnold, novelist and colonial administrator.

. Essay in Criticism It is a generous book, full of theories and academic justifications. Mathew Arnold whom I consider "Father of Comparative Literature" and one of the greatest intellectuals in the 19th century. it is so obvious that Arnold was a great humanist before anything else.this assumption reflects even in his definition for comparative literature. he said "“Everywhere there is connection. Everywhere there is illustration. No single event, no single literature is adequately comprehended except in relation to other events, to other literatures.”. so some words was used for the first time in defining such branch of literature.

تعود هذه المقالات الأدبية عن وردزورث وميلتون وتوماس جراي وبايرون وكيتس وشلي، والقليل غيرهم، إلى حوالي ١٥٠ سنة، وهي لم تفقد طلاوتها مع ذلك، وأحسب أن السبب يرجع إلى أن المؤلف شاعر في المقام الأول، لا ناقد حقًا، أي خالق أثر لا سائر على أثر، لأن ما تبقى بس من أثر هذا الكتاب في نفسي، وقد أنهيته قبل أيام، كان عن كيف قد يعبر شخص يحب الأدب عن إعجابه عما يحبه من ذلك الأدب، وبما لا يحبه أيضًا بالتأكيد، ولكن كانت مساحة تعبيره عن ما يحبه من الأدب أكثر عن تعبيره عن ما لا يحبه فيه، فعلى العكس من الصورة النمطية للناقد، كان من المؤثر، وفي مقالة كتبها قبل وفاته بعام واحد عن شخصية الكاتب السويسري هنري فردريك أميل بمناسبة ترجمة كتاب يومياته وتحقيقه للرواج بين الناس، بيّن فيهاعدم إعجابه بهذه اليوميات، ثم التفت إلى جانب من مؤلفات أميل، ليقول قبل أن يتفرغ لعرضها حتى نهاية المقال:

وهذا الجانب من جوانب أميل هو الذي أودّ الآن أن ألفت الأنظار إليه، ولو أن غرضي كان مجرد الاستخفاف وإظهار العيوب والقول بأن الناس قد أفرطوا في الثناء على أميل، وأن معالجته لفلسفة المايا تبدو في نظري غير ذي نفع لنفسه أو للآخرين، لأحجمت عن الكتابة عنه!

أي لولا هذه الحسنة الواحدة التي رآها فيما لم يعجبه، لَما كتب حرفًا! وهذا جميل، لأن الخصوبة كلها أن يصرف أحدنا مزاجه ووقته في الكتابة عما أحبه، بدلاً عن صرفها في الكتابة عما لم يحبه، وهذا في الوقت نفسه أصعب ما في الأمر، من أجل أن أحدنا كذلك غالبًا لا يجد ما يقوله عن عمل جميل سوى إنه جميل! ثم يشير إلى ما لا يحتاج إلى الإشارة أصلاً! فالجمال زئبقي التعريف لا يزال، وما زال الناس يحاولون منذ الأزل تعريف أثر الفن والشعر والجمال بكلمات ملموسة تقبض على مسار هذا الإحساس في النفس، وهيهات! وللمفارقة، فقد كان أكثر مقالات الإعجاب بالشعراء، في هذا الكتاب، هي في الأصل مقدّمة المؤلف لكتابه عن مختارات هذا الشاعر أو ذاك ممن أحبه!

Those of us "of a certain age" probably know Matthew Arnold chiefly from having had to read "Dover Beach" in school. I don't think it's required reading any more. I inherited quite a number of old books from my maternal grandfather and decided to start actually delving in and reading some of them. Pulled out a 1925 edition of Arnold's ESSAYS in CRITICISM originally published in 1865. Absolutely fascinating! Probably not accessible for most modern readers, but if you are an English-major type nerd, I highly recommend!
