Max Brand, one of America's most popular and prolific novelists and author of such enduring works as Destry Rides Again and the Doctor Kildare stories, died on the Italian front in 1944.
Dr. Kildare is minding his own business when there's an accident on the street. He goes to help. there's a crowd forming and a policeman who doesn't know what's going on. A woman is hurt, and wants to be taken to the hospital, but there's no time. A boy might be paralyzed.
Later, as things shake out, everyone wants to sue the hospital. There's a trial, and Kildare is apt to be fired or worse.
The perception of the medical field has really changed since these days, and I'm not sure it's all for the better.
