As a child, Liam was kept in isolation and under control of his abusive pack Alpha. He eventually escaped and forged a life as a lone wolf. After finding out Liam survived the explosion that killed his parents, Griffon immediately throws himself into rescuing Liam. Ten years later, Griffon finally finds his lost mate. All Griffon wants to do is take Liam home and protect him, but Liam is scared to leave the only peace he's known. Then an emergency forces Liam to confront his past and risk his future. Will Liam be able to follow his instinct and believe in the happiness and safety Griffon represents, or has his ability to trust been completely shattered?
My name is Kam Miller. I'm a 33 year old unemployed, part-time bartender. I lost my job this summer due to the financial crappiness of our miserable economy. I knew it was coming but it still sucked for about a week then I realized I never had to go back to that boring job. I was lucky, I had a good paying job that gave me medical benefits but after ten years my brain was starting to atrophy due to the lack of challenge. While I will miss my awesome co-workers, I will never miss the monotony and tedium of the insurance industry.
About a year ago a friend told me about the Silver Publishing website. He knew how much I enjoyed reading and thought I would appreciate a small publishing company that was willing read submissions from anybody. After losing my job I finally got the guts up to send in my first book and luckily they accepted it. Liam's Happiness was just something I was fooling around with during my free time and now other people may take the chance to read it. While, I will never be the next Stephen King, I am damn happy that I took a chance and Silver Publishing is willing to put my writing out in the universe.
I was very much in the mood for a 'typical' shifter book, a small abused younger omega and a big strong protective possessive sappy-softie alpha. So, this one fit the bill, it hit on all the tropes I wanted, Liam had a loving family, but was abducted and kept beaten, hidden and abused with only an equally abused Cale as a friend. After more than a decade they escape and Liam spends most of his time as a wolf, evading all others. But the people who love Liam have been looking for him and of course the big lovey alpha is the one that finds him, and yep, you guessed it, they are mates. All is well in Mandy-land, there is of course a side conflict with the baddies, the little omega gets to stand up for himself and protect his mate..and there is a sequel ready and waiting for me. My only niggle and it's totally mine and probably won't bother anyone else
3.5 stars. It annoyed me that someone was in dire need of being rescued and the two lead MC's just kept having sex at crucial times when they needed to plan rescue and retrieval badly. Jeez!!!
This storyline is enjoyable enough, but DEFINITELY to bland and similar to most of all shifters books from Lynn Hagen or, as MandyM wrote, from Stormy Glenn. But at least we got a prologue and an epilogue in this version, so as a reader I got an emotion for a complete story. It wasn't a bad story, but kind of boring one in general.
While this was your typical shifter/mate type story, I knew that going into reading it. Other than the pacing being a bit too fast and a lot of character introductions in a short period of time, it was a nice fast read.
¿Y MI JODIDA TRAMA?
Confronting your fears and facing the past can be a tough thing to do, and Liam has more than enough reason to be hesitant – nothing less than his life and freedom are at stake. Focusing on the themes of learning to trust again, and the love of a man who wants nothing more than to have Liam at his side, this is a story about family, or pack, and how it can heal even the most horrific wounds if given time and attention.
Liam was kept a prisoner and abused by his own family – how is he ever going to trust anyone again? Living as a lone wolf seems by far the better solution. But then there is Griffon – and Liam can feel the attraction from the first moment they meet. Liam is a very sweet and caring man, and deserves better than what he's had to deal with. Despite all that he still learns to trust – at an appropriately hesitant pace.
Griffon is a great guy. He's been looking for Liam for ten years, and even thought what happened to his mate wasn't his fault, he feels guilty and responsible. He will do anything to bring Liam back with him, and his support and quickly emerging love are key factors in helping Liam become part of the pack.
With a great set of supporting characters, who will hopefully return in the books to come, this story is an entertaining read with all the expected trimmings of a werewolf/shifter tale. If you like werewolves, lonely men returning to society, and hot man-on-man action, you will probably like this short book.
NOTE: This book was provided by Silver Publishing for the purpose of a review on Rainbow Book Reviews.
This? Was ridiculous. Oh, rest assured, it started out all right. But then newbie-ism set in heavily.
The writing as such was very clumsy, and the dual first person perspective really did not help matters. At least it was divided by chapter and clean that way. Still.
Maybe most jarringly, Liam’s language and knowledge of the world did not match up with his history even remotely. I mean, the beginning was stark and all, but then things turned wildly unrealistic with the banter and cute nicknames and whatnot. Yeah, good to know that Liam used to read everything he got his hands on, but somehow I don’t think that there was a copy of The Joy Of Gay Sex lying around in the attic he was confined to for most is life. … Seriously, how the fuck does he know all these things about sex anyway?
It’s depressingly clear that this author is trying to emulate the big series around, along the lines of Lynn Hagen and the like. All those men living together, so much blatant setup for later, and, oh my god, the character inconsistency just about killed me. Liam was really the worst. I wish the author had focused on creating this one character instead of bouncing between traits of all her favourite bottom boys by other authors. Omega, my ass. That guy is as opinionated and bossy and alpha-bitchy as they come. Then again, pack structures seem a bit hazy in this to begin with.
Eh, not a good start for this author and this series. With any luck the writing will improve over time, as it has with so many other authors. I’ll try to check back at a later date. Much later, I hope.
This was pretty bad. There was a lot of info dumping, but not enough world building. The story was thin, and just a thread between bad sex scenes. I was also a little icked out on the age gap, its never said the exact age spread, but the Alpha was best friends with the Omega's adopted parents. I don't find being old enough to be your mate's father if not grandfather to be sexy at all, quite disgusting actually. So I will not be reading the rest of this series.
This was an interesting premise, so I decided to buy it and check out this new series. Now, while it shares several cliches with many other shifter novels, it was still an interesting and entertaining read. If you like reading paranormals, I would recommend this to you but if you're looking for some unique never before seen paranormal read, you might want to skip this.
A lot of plot holes and Liam's character is too hip to have been imprisoned in an attic since he was a small child and then spent ten years completely alone mostly in wolf form.
Liam escaped from the hands of an abusive Alpha with the help of his only friend Cale. Now, he lives in the wilds of Canada as a wolf, keeping to himself. But, one day someone finds him, wanting him to return to the place where his nightmares reside. Griffon has hunted for Liam for years and finally he has tracked him down. But, the hardest part is yet to come; to convince his mate to return to civilization and to face his fears. An emergency forces them both to confront the past and Liam learns just where his real strength is.
This book is Kam Miller’s first published work and for a first timer, she’s done a great job. Liam is an Omega. When his adoptive parents were killed in an explosion, he was taken by his biological grandparents and kept as a prisoner. Everyone believing he died in the explosion. Now, ten years after his escape from his cruel grandparents, he is wary of ever trusting anyone again, but he feels safe with the wolf who finds him. Griffon is a strong but caring Alpha and tried to get to Liam before he disappeared. Now, after ten years of hunting he has finally found the wolf who is his mate, but getting Liam’s trust is hard. Especially when they are forced to return to pack lands by the kidnapping of one of their own, Cale.
Liam is a very gentle wolf and so very, very sweet. The way that he was treated was appalling and I was so glad that the author wrote about his escape. Griffon is a strong but compassionate wolf and he rules his pack like they are family and he has been devoted to finding Liam since he first discovered he was alive. Both Liam and Griffon click when they first meet and it does get very sexually charged between them, but they get to know each other a little bit before jumping each other’s bones.
The storyline is quite good. Liam being an Omega can help calm wolves and unfortunately Liam’s grandfather was completely insane and looked down on Omegas, so Liam was punished just for living. Now a threat connected to his past re-emerges and both Liam and Griffon fear the outcome when a pack-mate is in danger. The council failed him badly in the past and I think Kam Miller should write a story that shakes up all their rules (you’ll understand why when you read this). Now I love hot man on man sex as much as the next person and this has plenty to keep you going, but sometimes it just felt out-of-place.
Hmmm, I will recommend this to those who love shifters, hot sex, a good storyline, some danger, some great characters (and there are a few of them) and a happy ending.
Werewolf Liam O’Donnell is special but he is also gay, which would normally be a death sentence in his birth pack were it not for his gifts. Escaping his abusive grandparents, Liam lives as a lone wolf in the Canadian wilderness. When Alpha wolf Griffon Connelly finally found Liam, fear caused Liam to run, it was only the enticing scent of Griffon that lured Liam back to the man as well as back to a new home with Griffon’s pack.
Liam's Happiness is the first book in The Portland Pack series. The superb plot illustrates a heartwarming amusing interaction between the characters, a little drama from a past antagonist and sensual intimacy. The characters are adorably engaging. Though Liam was subjected to mental and physical abuse most of his childhood, he did have one friend who did everything he could to help Liam including aiding Liam in escape. Denied schooling, Liam is sorely lacking in werewolf education. However, Liam immediately senses that Griffon was trustworthy. Not only is Liam the Alpha’s mate but as a peacemaker, Liam is essential to the whole pack. The love and respect displayed by the pack allows Liam to release some of his fears. Griffon is a compassionate Alpha who cares for all of the members of his unique pack. Finding his mate after years of searching, Griffon experiences a joy he has never known. Griffon is dedicated to keeping his feisty mate Liam safe for the rest of their lives, a mission also shared by Liam.
Kam Miller has created an outstanding happy for now saga that I enjoyed immensely. I look forward to the next installment.
Nice, enjoyable story, but I have to agree with Kimberly - too many pot holes and the pacing was too fast. Also the way the characters were introduced was a little too uncoordinated. First there were Liam, Cale & the grandparents, then there were Liam & Griffon and then, all of a sudden you were confronted with a bunch of pack members and "bad guys" that completely missed out on any detailed introduction. I now know the names of 20 or more characters but that's it. There is no further description of who they are, where they come from, which role in the pack they have etc. It's just a big chaotic mess. This is something that should definitely be wotked on.
All in all, I give it 3 stars. It's well done being it Kam Miller's first published story but I expect more from the ones following. I also hope that next to the story of Raven & Cale there will also be one about Declan and one about Joey :-)
Kam Miller had nice idea with this book but story plot did not reach true normal shifter book. In another word; that story could be made more complex if writer didn't fill pages with sex but work on the plot. The start is very good but after Liam if found road turns down.
I liked the MC's and the story itself, but there were a lot of plot holes. The pacing was also a little too fast considering the abuse Liam went through. I liked it, but it could have been better with a bit more work and editing.
I enjoyed this first book in a series. I wish the book had been longer, just so I could get to know the characters better, but I know I'll get my chance with the upcoming books.
So Much pain and suffering, Liam living alone and isolated suddenly there is Griffin as a mate and a whole new pack. Liam adapts pretty well considering.
