About the author

Arkadi Petrovich Golikov, better known as Arkadiy Gaidar (Аркадий Гайдар), was a Soviet writer, whose stories were very popular among Soviet children. His story "Timur and his squad" (1940) made Gaidar famous. The character Timur was named after and partially based on Gaidar's son. A captivating account of an altruistic pioneer youth gave birth to the mass Timur movement among Young Pioneers and other child organizations all over the Soviet Union.

ছোট্ট বরিস,ইশকুলে পড়ে। সেখানে তার অনেক বন্ধু। এই বন্ধুদের সাথে হেসে খেলে বেড়ে উঠে বরিস। তার বাবা যুদ্ধে যোগ দিয়েছে,তাই প্রায় দু বছর বাবার সাথে কোন রকম যোগাযোগ নেই ছোট্ট বরিসের। এর মধ্যে বরিস বই পড়ে আর বন্ধুদের থেকে বিপ্লব সম্পর্কে অনেক কিছু জেনে নিয়েছে।

ছোট্ট বরিস একটু একটু করে বড় হয়,একদিন বাবা আসে। দেখা হয় বাপ ছেলের। বাবা তাকে যুদ্ধের কথা বলে,এতে সে বিপ্লব সম্পর্কে আরো আগ্রহী হয়ে উঠে।

একদিন তার বাবাকে মেরে ফেলে বিপক্ষ দল। সেটা ছোট্ট বরিসের মনে খুব আঘাত হানে। বদলে দেয় তার পুরো জীবন। ছোট্ট বরিস একটু একটু করে বদলে যায়। হয়ে উঠে পুরোদস্তু একজন যোদ্ধা, একজন বিপ্লবী।

আর্কাদি গাইদারে এই বইটা পড়ার ইচ্ছে ছিল অনেক দিনের,অবশেষে শেষ করলাম। লেখক নিজে একজন যোদ্ধা ছিলে,তার জন্য ই হয়ত এই বইটাতে পুরো সোভিয়েত বিপ্লব দারুণ করে ফুটিয়ে তুলেছেন একটা ছোট্ট বালকের দৃষ্টি কোণ থেকে। শুরুতে একটু খটমট লাগলেও, পরে এডজাস্ট হতে পেরেছি,আর তখন ই ভালো লাগার শুরু। লেখক দেখিয়েছেন কিভাবে দেশের সামগ্রিক পরিস্থিতি একটা মানুষকে বদলে দেয়।

অনুবাদ ও অসাধারণ ছিল। একদম ঝরঝরে। পড়ে ভালো লেগেছে।

'School' is a tale of the Russian Civil War of 1917, experienced by a 14 year old boy, Boris, the narrator of the book. Boris abandoned his school for joining the Red Army, the resistance formed by the proletariat people for establishing a true socialism. This book is mostly a description of the comradeship between the soldiers in the battlefields, who had no training, no chain of command, who just kept fighting for their freedom but, nevertheless, it also shows the problems erected in an unorganized post czar Russian society. A spontaneous and vivid narration, making it a great book, especially for the children. A recommended one I'd say.

"Шкота" ("School") I thought it was a little boring and disorganized. It felt like there was no beginning and no end. I guess you could say it was one of his earlier works (I believe it was originally published in 1930) and maybe that's why the novel felt a little off...

"Военная тайна" ("War Secret") was a little bit better than School. On the overall I liked a little mystery in there. It was funny at times and tragic too. The novel was published in 1935, during a very dangerous time in the USSR with Stalin's "cleaning out the house", so I am not surprised that about 70% of the novel was really propagandistic. It sure brought some good memories about time spent in summer camps.

"Судьба барабанщика" ("Faith of a drummer") - didn't really care for this one.

"Тимур и его команда" ("Timur and his company") - Ahhh...finally the story that I remember from my childhood. A story that still brings a smile to my face. Loved it all over again.

Short stories" "P.B.C.", "Четвертый блиндаж" и "Голубая чашка". Nice, short and sweet :)

I guess you can call most of Arkady Gaidar's children/Ya novels as the 'forgotten' kind by the children today.

The School is a largely autobiographical story about the school of life which the younger generation of the revolution passed through and about the fathers and sons who took up arms to fight a just war for a happy future.

The story follows the hero, a 14 year old soldier's son named Boris Gorikov.


Something I like about a group of selective children's/YA authors is (this is a personal selection, btw.)the honesty in stories. This one's the same: a wise little book that does not hide life's worries and disappointments from its youthful readers.

So, yes. This is a very nice-read.

" একদিন চুবুক বেঁচেছিলেন, বাচ্চা বেদে বেঁচে ছিলো, বেঁচে ছিলো খট্টাসও... আর আজ ওরা কেউ নেই, আর আমিও থাকবো না। মনে পড়লো বাচ্চা বেদে একবার বলেছিল আমায়ঃ 'আর তারপর থিকে কি করে ভালভাবে বাঁচা যায় তাই ঢুঁড়তে বেরিয়ে পড়লাম।' আমি ওকে এর উত্তরে শুধিয়েছিলুম, 'তুমি কি মনে কর, ভাল জীবনের সন্ধান তুমি পাবে?' ও জবাব দিয়েছিলঃ 'একা তো পাবো না, কুছুতে না। তবে সবাই যখন এত করে চাইছে, সবাই মিলমিশ করে ঢুঁড়লে মিলতে পারে বটেক।' "

Понравилась первая часть "Школа", вторая часть - "Весёлое время" - чуть меньше, а последняя - "Фронт" - совсем не понравилась, не люблю книги про войну.

বিশ্বসাহিত্য কেন্দ্রের কল্যাণে ছোটবেলা থেকে রুশ কিশোর সাহিত্যের সাথে মেলবন্ধন। বইগুলোর বঙ্গানুবাদ তখন ছাপা হত সরাসরি মস্কো থেকে। সেই সুবাদে পরিচয় হয়েছিল আর্কাদি গাইদারের এই 'ইশকুল' বইটার সাথে। মন কাড়ানো প্রচ্ছদ, কি নিদারুণ মুদ্রণ, প্রতিটা পাতায় পুরনো বইয়ের একটা আলাদা ঘ্রাণ।
এখন হয়ত নতুন মলাটের আড়ালে গল্পগুলো শোভা পেয়েছে নতুন আঙ্গিকে, তবুও পুরনো ঐ বইগুলো খুব একটা দেখি না।
