Buffalo Hunt is set in the West, during the waning years of the buffalo hunt. Angelique Dumas is a ten-year-old Métis girl, and this year she gets to be part of the hunt—not with the children, but with the grown-ups. It will be hard work, she knows, and she will have lots of new and important responsibilities. Just how important they are becomes clear on the day Angelique wanders off exploring, and finds herself in the middle of a buffalo stampede.
Cora Taylor is a famous author. She has written over fourteen books published in many languages including Japanese and Dutch. Her books are sold in many countries and have won lots of awards.
Cora was born on January 14, 1936 in the TB Sanatorium at Fort Qu’Appelle, Saskatchewan. Her mother had tuberculosis (aka TB) and wasn’t allowed to hold her until she was five months old, when she finally left the sanatorium. Cora grew up on her grandmother's farm in Saskatchewan.
Now Cora is a newlywed. She has 8 children and 17 grandchildren.
Her writing studio in Ontario is filled with Coca Cola memorabilia and she loves to watch the red Cardinal birds out of her window.
Cora has three homes and travels all over the world, but she bases herself in Edmonton, Alberta.
Angelique Dumas is a ten-year-old Métis girl, whose culture blends European and First Nations traditions. One of those traditions is the buffalo hunt, an exciting and dangerous time when the men shoot the buffalo that the women will turn into food and other products used in their daily lives. Angelique is now old enough to help her Maman prepare pemmican, but she'd rather be off running across the prairie with the boys! Her wandering spirit gets her into a bit of trouble when she and the boys are caught in the middle of the hunt. Angelique makes a mistake that may cause her father his life or at least their livelihood. She must be brave and strong to help her family.
I liked learning about the Metis way of life. Do not read this if you are a vegetarian or vegan. The descriptions of killing and preparing buffalo are very vivid.
These books are written for the 8-12 year old age group but I think the writing is much more simplistic than AG books and advanced readers will find them too easy. They are available in mass market paperback format in black and white and not as high quality as American Girl books. They line drawings and black and white illustrations are nice.
This book is the first about Angelique, a young Metis girl, in the Our Canadian Girl series. The Our Canadian girl books are about young fictional Canadian girls during different periods in history.
It's 1865. Ten-year-old Angelique Dumas and her family are Metis, descended from French traders and the prairie natives. Most of the year, the Dumas family lives on a small farm. But twice a year, they join other Metis families for a large buffalo hunt. Now that Angelique is ten, she will have new responsibilities during the buffalo hunt. But as hard as Angelique tries to do a good job, she causes trouble when she wanders off and is lost in a buffalo stampede.
Young girls who enjoy historical novels are sure to enjoy this and other books in the Our Canadian Girl series. Angelique is a likeable character and I enjoyed reading about the unique historical setting.
I just cannot express my love for all Our Canadian Girl books! Angelique's story had great examples of a beautiful family/community bond and a bold leading lady. Always recommend Our Canadian Girl books for anyone at the age of 12 or if you're 22, like me, that's okay too!
