Goldratt's Theory of Constraints: a Systems Approach to Continuous Improvement

Rate this book
H. William Dettmer goes beyond the Theory of Constraints introduced by Eliyahu M. Goldratt in his best-selling books The Goal and It's Not Luck. Dettmer describes the action steps that follow this theory and shows, step-by-step, how to effectively manage change in any organizational system, at any level. Much of the content in this book focuses on the author's understanding and interpretation of Goldratt's logical Thinking Process. He clarifies the five focusing steps of the theory and teaches the mechanics of all the thinking tools. Using this book, you can determine what to change, what to change to, and how to make change happen.

Very different than a typical book by Goldratt. More like a textbook and sometimes you have to wade through it. But it is very practical and a great way to systematically learn about the theories propounded in the The Goal and It's Not Luck

It is a great book for newcomers in thinking processes. But I'm not fully agree that we should describe a system with boundaries.

I would suggest the author not overcomplicating things. His overthinking led to points where he contradicts himself in different parts of the book.
And it's also obvious that the author came from an academic, not from the practical application of TOC.

Excellent book discussing the theory of constraints. Can be well-used in manuafcturing environments or adapted to business process re-engineering.

One of my first book, read as the company I joined was working on developing software products based on Theory of constraints. How simple is common sense and how difficult it is use the same when there is a big work flow. Must read for every one
