There is a sentence on the cover claiming that author can be called 2nd Tom Clancy. Unfortunately this book did not convince me to agree with such judgement. Action is built, built, built and suddenly book ends. No real tension, no reading till late night. My time wasn't completely wasted but there are many better action thrillers.
I was actually disappointed when one of my favorite icky bug authors switched genres and went for military style thrillers. However, since I loved his writing, I just had to get anything R Karl Largent wrote. Red Ice was one of the first T.C. Bogner novels I found. I originally read it twenty years ago but never go to review it until now (as of 2015).
Always a huge fan, I was not disappointed in Red Ice. Largent kept his same style and form and translated it into an outstanding thriller. Told in solid third-person with brisk narrative and not bogged down in any rambling exposition, this story is on par with any of the thriller greats of not only then, but now.
I was sad to hear of his passing years ago and his stories are a fine legacy to a great writer. Red Ice is no exception. It is well worth the search to find a copy. Highly recommended.
This book was better than Red Tide. A little more action-packed and a better mystery. There were some odd Russian names that the author chose which took some getting used to. Namely, one of the characters was named E-Alexa Chinko. I've never seen a first name spelled like that and am not aware if that is a Russian custom. I've read Tom Clancy and have never seen a name like that in his books.
Tom Clancy is a better author than Largent, despite what the fact that the cover says it "out Clancy's Clancy", it doesn't.
But, I'm interested in seeing where Red Skies takes TC Bogner.
