DuBose Heyward was born in Charleston, South Carolina. He, along with John Bennett and Hervey Allen, established the Poetry Society of South Carolina in 1920. Heyward's works are often remembered for their treatment of American blacks with compassion and dignity. Although not African-American, Heyward used his experience working as a cotton checker to bring a realism to the African-American characters in his works. He is often recognized as being the first white author to represent accurately the Gullah dialect in fiction. Heyward died of a heart attack on June 16, 1940, in Tryon, North Carolina.
