Ryland Brothers #2

For the First Time

Rate this book
No love blazes hotter than the one that burns For the First Time

Devlin Ryland has returned to London in triumph, acclaimed throughout the city for his courage at Waterloo and selfless rescue of a fellow soldier. But Devlin wants no part of his newfound glory - until he escapes to the country estate of a friend and encounters the one woman for whom he would gladly play the hero: the statuesque beauty Lady Blythe Christian. Unfortunately, the lady who so stirs his passions wants nothing at all to do with England's heralded champion.

The man Devlin saved was Blythe's betrothed… who then heartlessly married another. Now the pain only intensifies when Devlin is near - though, truth be told, she is not unmoved by the strength of his character and his considerable charms. But with heartbreak so fresh in her memory, how can noble Devlin convince Blythe to trust again… because only then can he show her what it is to be loved for the first time.

3 Estrellas.

A ver..

Hero was supposed suffering from PTS, he came out dumb mostly. Heroine was supposedly flaunting convention, while being a stickler for it. The usual loving brother who controlled her completed the cast.

I only wish she would have murdered him and be herself. But it wouldn't be a historical then uh? Pity. [yes, it's my personal pet peeve, rather a personal hate, the sorry-I-love-you-but-I-know-better-so-I-manipulate character. I really hate it, I've lived it too, and yes it's love, but without respect.]

Ignore me, as usual. You might even like it . :)

My only complaint is that the book is far more focused on the hero's angst than the heroine's. I adored the first half - a sweet, hot romance between a woman built like me, and a hot, giant soldier. There are insecurities on both sides, and I liked watching the romance unfold. While I felt like the third act was not terribly necessary (I tend to lose interest after the wedding bells), it was interesting enough to keep me engaged and not have me resenting the extra pages that don't cater to my favorite tropes. I'm going to check out more of this series/author

Reread in 2022: I did enjoy the dashes of angst and insecurity, even if they were more focused on the hero than the heroine. There is too much other stuff going on for this to be a recurring read (that shelf tends to be easy fluffy trope reads) but it stood up to a second read, and I’ll probably revisit it again. One complaint:

The blurb had me hooked. It sounded like a recipe for a thrilling adventure. However, the execution left me wanting.

The main female character, unfortunately, felt like a constant source of dissonance. The author clearly intended for her to be a strong, independent heroine, but I kept picturing her as Brienne of Tarth in the later seasons of Game of Thrones – extremely tall; 6 foot -driven to a point that made it difficult to root for her.

This mental image wasn't aided by the lack of romantic chemistry. The blurb hinted at a potential love interest, but their interactions were lukewarm at best. It's a shame, because a sizzling romance could have added another layer of intrigue.

Overall, this felt like a missed opportunity. The core idea was promising, but the characters and pacing fell short. Not recommended.

The question that keeps coming into play throughout this book, is, what is love? Both main characters question it even though it finds them and redeems them both.

Devlin has no clue what love is. He feels his parents never loved him and even though he cares for his brothers, they all have their own personal problems. He is so confused until he meets Blythe.

Blythe is a 6"0 junoesque amazon, or so we are told. She was jilted by a man who she was engaged to unofficially. But then he went off to war and found the woman of his dreams. Blythe's self esteem is so low. She hates being taller than most men and she is still smarting from her former beau's betrayal from 2 years ago. Her brother Miles and his wife Varya throw a house party and that is when she meets Devlin.

Devlin, quite simply is the perfect mate for her. He towers over her and makes her feels things she never feels before. Devlin feels the same but he has secrets in his past and because of this, he is unsure about his feelings for Blythe. Devlin is your typical "cry me a river" tormented hero. Things would run so smoothly if he could work out his angst.

Along with these two constantly questioning themselves, Blythe's old love Carny arrives with his wife. Blythe is an interesting heroine, especially her description of being tall and having some meat on her bones. Devlin at times can be annoying but is an overall nice guy who deserves a woman like Blythe.

The love scenes and very steamy... you will never look at a vanity the same way again! If you like tormented but sexy heroes with strong heroines, pick up this book.

really loved the character development...and how they both were trying to understand if they really were in love...In most romance novels, they both just realize randomly that they love each other...however, in this, I could really understand and feel for the characters with their confusion about if they are actually in love and the author carried this concept out nicely without making it seem too repetitive. I could clearly see why they both fell in love with each other and they both are perfect for each other ;)

overall, great writing style, plot could have had a bit more intrigue, but wonderful romance...a solid 5 stars;)

I really enjoyed the first half of the book, the protagonists were engaging, and their chemistry in the beginning was charming. The London section of the book dragged a bit and the ending confrontation and the way it was handled was not good at all. I enjoyed Devlin and the Rylands’s enough to keep going with the series however.

I'm all for the brooding hero type and a strong heroine but this was just so full of the "does he/she love me or not." It's a shame actually because I really wanted to like this story but had to skip some pages because of their "insecurities."

Say you love me.
Two years before, Devlin returned from the Napoleonic War as a hero. Fighting his nightmares, he finds little peace until Blythe. Close in height, they can see each other eye to eye. If only they can say to each other, "I love you."
A fantastic love story! It's a keeper!

Devlin Ryland has recently returned from war and he is claimed to be a war hero from his action at Waterloo. However Devlin is tormented by what he had to do being a military man, and having spent ten years in the Military. He then heads to the countryside estate of his friend, Miles and Carney. Where he comes to face to face with Mile's younger sister, Lady Blythe Christian. Devlin is immediately drawn to the beautiful Blythe, who sets his paces racing. Lady Blythe however doesn't feel the same. Devlin saved her ex fiancee and which then led to Blythe being jilted, heartbroken, and scandalized. Blythe doesn't want to feel anything for this handsome war hero Devlin, however her heart and body has different ideas than her logic dictates. At the same time, Blythe is also faced with her ex fiancee whom she at one time had loved and she had thought he loved her. But he fell in love with his wife, and so Blythe against her better judgment becoming friends with his wife Tessa. Will wonders ever cease? Well will these two destined lovers find a happiness that they both deserve?

I truly loved this one, this is the second one in the Ryland Brother series that I have read. I really was endeared by Devlin and Blythe's story. Devlin is a very tormented man that needs more than anything a woman that loves him. He has nightmares and his closest companion that keeps him safe is his rifle. This experience he starts having with Blythe is utterly new to him, he finds himself falling for her without even fully realizing it. Blythe has been hurt in the past, and endeavors to guard her heart to make sure that doesn't happen again. Blythe finds her hearts barriers down with each moment that she spends with Devlins. As their relationship grows so does their sensual desire for one another. It becomes a whirlwind of desire, love and learning to trust one's heart. I have to say I have very few complaints with this one, It was a romantic read, that had my head spinning, the characters were well portrayed as well as the surroundings of the book. It really drew me in, and I couldn't wait to see what would happen between Blythe and Devlin and it was a great adventure to see their relationship progress into something real.

This sequel to Elusive Passion follows the previous hero's little sister (who is actually quite statuesque) Blythe and the hero, Devlin Ryland. Devlin is the third son of a Viscount, from a scandalous/tortured family and carries rather torturous memories of the war and his role in it. He is in essence, a tortured hero. Blythe is quirky, sarcastic and insecure. Even with her insecurities, I rather liked her (with the exception of her forgiving nature, which will be further explained ahead). She had her heart broken by her previous fiance, her brother's best friend, Carny. He went off to war swearing he loved her and came back married to someone else he fell in love with. It's been 2 years and Blythe isn't ready to forgive, but Devlin seems to be handy for distracting her.

This started slowly and continued slowly as well. The two come together and are practically in love within days, but both refuse to admit it (either because they don't believe it or don't trust it). So what follows is a bunch of melodramatic misunderstandings (not big ones) and miscommunications and some sheer stubbornness to draw out the angst rather unnecessarily. Their romance was pretty sweet - I wouldn't mind a guy like Devlin for myself (although his torturedness did get irritating). Their sex scenes were spectacularly hot! And Carny - he was creepy. But my problem is how unrealistic the behavior toward Carny and his actions are. I cannot fathom how one could still consider a guy who tried to rape you as a friend, no matter how drunk he was. It was all very much brushed under the rug - forgiven but not forgotten. Bullshit, really. That's the sort of behavior that results in banishment from the social circle. Evidently nobody cares that he's a piece of shit.

I cannot in good conscience, give For the First Time more than two stars, although I wish I could. I liked the scarred hero and the statuesque heroine. The secondary characters were okay, but not really engaging. The book was really slow-I kept looking at my kindle thinking, "I can't really be at only 29%(etc, etc), can I?" It was all repetitive thoughts & dialogue.
A year or two ago I accidentally read In the Night first, and really liked it. Now I am wondering if that was a fluke, or if that book was really as good as I thought.

The question that keeps going through my mind is, why did they not take the attempted rape more seriously? They were all like, 'Oh yeah it's fine, he was drink, he didn't mean it'. Well if the hero and her brother didn't come in, he actually would have RAPED her. But they were all like 'oh never mind'. If someone tried to rape my sister wether they were drink or not, I would kill them. This book was okay, but not brilliant, especially the ending, it was rubbish. I wouldn't bother reading it, there isn't really a point to it except for, does she love him, can he love her?

My favourite book from the Ryland Brothers series. A novel, imo, that stands the test of time, published in 2003. I love reading this again and again.
This is a lovely HEA story where Devlin, a brave ex-Peninsula war soldier and tortured soul, meets his soul mate in Blythe.
It seems a great pity that Kathryn Smith no longer writes Regency or Victorian novels today - yet another brilliant author gone over to the "dark side" of vampiric/werewolf-type stories!

I actually liked the story of the two, when they met for the first time, the chemistry between them. It was a great story... Until the end. The whole bit with Carney I did not like at all. The main reasonI have lower rating is because of the repetitive dialog the characters had with themselves. I was getting tired of reading the detailed expressions again and again. I understand they may have repetitive thinking, but would have preferred less detailed repeats.

It was ok. Not very exciting and I thought the H/H were both kind of dumb. The whole book was spent with each of them trying to decide whether they loved each other or not. Even after sex and marriage. Just a bit boring.

My first by this author. Actually, I was pleasantly surprised that I liked it. It was kind of slow, but tolerable. No villeins to be anxious about....just a total romance and how a couple finally came to love each other. Love scenes were pretty hot though.

I was worried that Lady Blythe would be an unreasonable, spiteful, and blind heroine but thankfully she grew throughout the book.

Devlin's journey of healing was nice and we were also introduced to some secondary characters that I am sure would b fleshed out later on.

I just loved Devlin. However, I got a bit annoyed with Blythe. Devlin showed her with every action and word that he loved her, but she was obsessed that he didn't say the actual words. Damn, girl, haven't you heard that actions speak louder than words?
