A well-written and unexpected historical novel, peopled with unpleasant characters and a chillingly psychopathic protagonist.
The novel deals with a host of unattractive elements in Georgian society - infant mortality, paedophillia, murder, the treatment of women, class inequality - frankly and with an unflinching gaze.
It’s an impressive and unusual literary debut, not just another celeb novel.
I wasn't expecting this book to go as it did. Pain, emotional neglect, lust, abuse, sexism and psychopathic tendencies. There is little self pity and a lot of jealousy and vengefulness. Of the books I've read this year, I read this one the fastest.
