The Most Embarrassing Dad in the World was embarrassing Nathalia even before she was born. He went and married Mum, didn't he? Mum's last name was De Montfort. Thanks to Dad she wasn't Nathalia De Montfort. She was Nathalia Bumole. "It's pronounced Bew-mow-lay," Dad would tell her patiently, time and again. "If anyone says differently, the joke's on them." But as Nathalia knows only too well, the joke will not be on them. It will be on her. Massively. If Nathalia can just keep The Most Embarrassing Dad In The World away from her new school, then maybe he won't ruin everything this time. Maybe.
Thanks again to Harper Collins Kids! I won this lovely book through a competition on Twitter. :)
4.5 stars out of 5.
This was just a wonderful book. It is about Nathalia and her very embarrassing dad.
Now I can hear you say this: Doesn't everyone have an embarrassing dad? Sure, but does your dad ride in a beat-down van, wear a clowns outfit to school, tell all the teachers (till they go crazy) about how pretty, awesome and wonderful you are, and makes decisions for you about things. And did I tell you about that birthday party, where everything went apocalyptic wrong? Or that one time you ended up in a tree? Or Belgium? Or his embarrassing act while he is djing? Well say hello to Nathalia's dad. He is all that and way way more. You will cringe your way through this book.
At times I was just so sorry for Nathalia, and she tried her best to send hints to her dad, but to no avail, he would just laugh, see the sunny side to things and then continue with the demolition course he set. :)
Nathalia doesn't only have her dad to worry about, her last name is also a cause for concern. Yeah, Bumole, which if you look at spells almost Bumhole. A very embarrassing name to have for one who is in school (though I am sure later at work there will be laughter about it too).
Nathalia was a really great kid, though at times I was wondering about her intelligence, she didn't seem that smart and made some pretty dumb remarks I wouldn't expect a kid of that age to say. I did love how she tried to make friends, she tried to ditch the terror of the school, but no matter what she tries she likes being with him the best. Yes, even if he picks his nose, talks about poo, like poetry about poo and is a general terror to everything. Of course she wants some girls as friends too, and luckily she finds someone.
That dad, my gosh, I was truly cringing, laughing and shaking my head at the things he did. But I still liked the dad. He was honest and hardworking and did his best for Nathalia (even though he destroyed more than he did right).
The whole book is a rollercoaster of fun, bums, puns and hilarious situations. There are also some illustrations that make the book way more fun.
And what did I see at the last part? We will get more Nathalia books? Yes, yes, and more yes please!
What teenager hasn’t known the embarrassment of a parent who tries too hard? Who says the wrong thing? Wears the wrong clothes? Drives the wrong car?
Nathalia has that problem. But not only that, he has the MOST EMBARRASSING surname in the history of terrible surnames. Pronounced bew-MOLE-ay, other people tend to call her ‘Bumhole’. Just what a teenager needs.
Starting at a new school, Nathalia is desperate to escape the torments she has formerly experienced and hide her name, as well as her dad. But of course, he won’t be kept hidden. And he WILL keep on trying to help his lttle girl!
It’s amusing, though as an adult, I felt about Nathalia just as I felt towards Greg in 'Diary of a Wimpy Kid' – I sympathised more with the grown-ups (or friends) in their lives and thought them rather selfish and lacking in empathy. But then again, I am 35!
And the story does, while including scenes of horrific embarrassment, also manage to show Dad’s love for his daughter, and of course by the end, she learns a little appreciation too.
Some very funny scenes – Dad’s amazingly inept but crazy birthday party is a highlight. I liked Nathalia’s growing friendship with a misfit in her class as well, that was nicely written.
I listened to the audio version of this book and enjoyed the lively and clear narration, Nathalia’s voice was well expressed.
Nathalia Buttface and the Most Embarrassing Dad in the World is written by Nigel Smith.
This book is about a girl called Nathalia Bumole. Her dad embarrasses her every day. She got her last name from her dad, his van is a hundred day old and she doesn't have any friends from her last school. Now Nathalia has a chance to start over her new life in a new school with a new house but with her dad, it's not going to end really well. Will Nathalia be able to make new friends and also stop her dad from embarrassing her?
I would recommend this book to children aged eight - twelve. This a humorous book and I loved this book. I would rate this book four out of five stars. You can totally relate this book to your own lives. All dads are annoying but you still have to love them. The genre of this book would be children's book. This book portrays a number of different things in the real world such as family issues, moving away, friendships and so on.
I love this book and had read all the books in the series so start reading! Hope you guys will enjoy it like I did!
I remembered reading this series and it being the funniest thing ever.
Is what I said on 18th September, 2015.
And now, on 23rd July 2023, I would like to reaffirm that this is still the funniest thing ever. Good to know my humour hasn’t changed from age 10 to age 18.
I reread this all last night instead of sleeping and then I woke up at 4pm and now I’m going to go watch the Barbie movie.
I don’t know how 10 year old me pictured their glamorous 18 year old life, but here it is! Impressive, isn’t it?
This book is fun, outrageously hilarious and totally relatable - who hasn't cringed in embarrassment at something their dad has done or said no matter how old you are (wearing a denim armani shirt to the pub when i was out with my friends when I was 18 that he thought was sooo cool. It was NOT! :/) As Nat embarks upon a quest for popularity her hapless dad tries his best to help, and every time ends up causing a scene! Read this now, it's great and I can't wait for the next instalment.
I enjoyed this a lot more then I thought I would. The humour in Nathalia Buttface and the most embarrassing dad in the world is well placed and had me smiling at times. I was also chuckling at what the characters were doing.
