Lynn Johnston has been bringing life to the Patterson clan for over 25 years, and for readers around the world, life just wouldn't seem right without her daily dispatch. It Must Be Nice to Be Little gives readers more of what they've come to expect from Johnston's beloved a sense of connection, a shared intimacy with a family as familiar as their own, and a front-row seat to the enduring, endearing comic saga called life.
Lynn Johnston CM OM is a Canadian cartoonist, well known for her comic strip For Better or For Worse, and was the first female cartoonist to win the Reuben Award.
My copy’s inscription reads, “To mom - merry Christmas! Love, Beth 1990”. I got it from Thriftbooks. In case Beth is wondering what happened to it.
These volumes seem to go from March to February. There are two vacations, one without the kids who stayed home with Jon’s parents, the other to see Ellie’s parents on Vancouver by train. Ellie’s friend Annie has her second baby, Christopher’s little brother. Ellie’s brother Phil moves to town so we’ll be seeing much more of him.
This comic strips is cute but it's like Calvin and Hobbes if it was from the moms perspective and you took Hobbes and all the fun and humour out of it. Its a comic strip about being a mom so it's a lot of unfunny cliches about motherhood and about kids, there's nothing wrong with that it can be cute and wholesome but I don't think there was one good joke in the entire collection. The punchline of virtually every strip is "moms work hard" at a certain point you're like ok I get it, I don't disagree but it's also not funny. Or the punchline is the child behaves like a child and by that I mean the joke is parenting cliches like a kid freaks out when being dropped off at daycare but doesn't want to leave when you pick them up.
There's nothing wrong with it, I was never annoyed by it I didn't walk away thinking this sucked but it was the definition of just ok I guess. I remember watching the tv show but can't remember if I enjoyed it or not as a kid. Was nostalgic and an interesting mix for my reading material but don't think I'll be picking up anymore of the series.
Lynn Johnston wouldn’t make anyone’s list for funniest cartoonist, but I think her strip might have been the one closest to looking like real life – anyone who was ever in a family would recognize some of her situations from first hand experience.
Uncle Phil comes to stay for a while. Annie has a baby. The family travel by train to B. C. to see family. Michael shop lifts a scarf. Ellie starts a part time job.
I needed something light. And not too thinky. These are pretty early and nicely diversionary. I had forgotten alot of the later developments with the family and their friends. Like I had forgotten completely about April Patterson. Completely. I miss reading the funnies periodically from the paper. Not enough to get the paper though.
I don't have much to say about this third For Better or For Worse collection. The strips are amusing, but there's no great storyline or significant development in the lives of the main characters. It is the first time that we see a photo of Lynn Johnston's family, however.
