Sara Shepard graduated from NYU and has an MFA from Brooklyn College. She has lived in New York City, Brooklyn, Tucson, Arizona, Philadelphia, and now lives in Pittsburgh, PA. Sara's Pretty Little Liars novels were inspired by her upbringing in Philadelphia's Main Line.
Okay. *inhales* first review on GoodReads: (BTW, this is taken from MY blog post, one I made about the Pretty Little Liar series, so...yeah.)
You know that moment when you finish a series, and you don’t know what to do with your life anymore? Well, one plus side to Pretty Little Liars is that THAT NEVER HAPPENS. Welcome to infinity (how many books there are in the series) reasons I hate the Pretty Little Series.
THE NUMBER OF BOOKS. First, let me clear the air by saying something. Kudos to the author, because writing books is hard. Also, I’m not hating on series with a bajillion books, I used to practically live off of Geronimo Stilton books. My problem is when there is NO need for more books. In serieses (serieses?) like Geronimo Stilton, each book has a new plot, a new adventure, and that’s why they are so good. In PLL (Pretty Little Liars), the books are SO repetitive, like the same plot points with a whole new set of characters. To emphasize my point, take the fact that the series was SUPPOSED to end on the 8th book, but instead went up to like 16 or 17. It’s so darn repetitive!
The number of characters. To put it into perspective. a new character is introduced every five seconds, and they all have dirty secrets. It’s like someone knocks on one of the Liars’ doors and all of a sudden they’re the suspect in not one, but TWO murders, have stolen from a bank, crashed an expensive car, and set a house on fire. And what’s worse, the character is usually introduced in one book, disappears for like two books, and then makes a reappearance in another book. I literally have no idea how she (the author) kept track of all the characters.
The amount of drama. I get it, they are in high school. But seriously, it’s like every one of the students has either killed someone, cheated on someone, or dies. Its crazy, and the sole reason I have anxiety over high school (JK, but like seriously.)
The Liars are stupid. Take the four most stupid people and THROW THEM OUT THE WINDOW BECAUSE THE LIARS ARE NOW THEM. Honestly, it’s like they pay NO attention to their surroundings. Their convos about ‘A’ usually go like this: Aria: “Guys I got a text from A” All: “Same!” Spencer: “Guys we should call the police.” All: “No! Then our secrets will be out in the open!” Spencer: “You’re right…”
Like COME ON guys, in the past four books, you haven’t told the police, and your secrets CAME OUT ANYWAY! So get it together and tell the police. Having a stalker and not telling anyone is literally one of the stupidest things you can do. You would be better off just giving your social media passwords to all the people in the school!
Freaking invincible Alison. I kid you not. This girl has immortality. She keeps coming back! Imagine a cockroach, and you cut off it’s head, but since cockroaches can live without their head, so it keeps running. Then you drown it in bug spray, but apparently it had a spare oxygen tank as well as full body armor so it survives that too. That's Alison for me.
Random plot twists. Plot twists are supposed to make the reader go like, “Oh. My. Gosh. I did NOT see that coming!” However, Pretty Little Liars plot twists makes you go more like, “Wait, what? Now she has 4 half brothers, a stepsister, is pregnant, and divorced her boyfriend but wait, he was actually her husband. And on top of that–plot twist– she’s been dead all along. *slaps forehead and throws self off of cliff*” When the author revealed that Alison was not Alison, but actually Courtney, her twin sister, I closed the book, absolutely done with the series.
Flimsy relationships. News flash, Liars, but running through guys like Nutella jars is NOT NORMAL! In one year, they went through about 6 guys EACH, Hanna being the worst girlfriend, and Spencer being the ‘best’ (I say that because she’s the best compared to the other Liars.) One or two guys, maybe even three, is a stretch, but like 6 is not normal. Also, why do all these guys LOVE them? First, most of them have cheated on their boyfriend. Also, they have murdered a couple of people. Also, they are literally about to be killed (talk about bad ju-ju). Finally, the author addresses over and over that they weren’t popular before Alison and the only one that was popular after was Hanna.
Yeah. So basically, I greatly dislike the PLL series. I actually skipped a book and just searched up the plot on Wikipedia (I know, I know, I was desperate.) The only reason I’m even reading the series anymore is for Aria and Noel, one of the cutest and longest couples of the series.
Also, Sara Shepard (the author), is freaking AMAZEBALLS, even thought this series wasn't her best... I did love love LOVE this other series call the Lying Game, it was amazing, and kept me hooked from the first word to the last.
Concernant la fin, Sara Shepard a réussi à me surprendre.
I wasn't overly impressed with this whole series... I believe it's my own fault because I watched the tv series first, but I found this weird and not at all engaging...
I would have to give this series 3 stars. The first 4 books were really well done and this one, I had higher hopes for. I would have to say that my most favorite of 5-8 would have to be wanted
And they just keep getting better I was really thankful that this wasnt the end or else I probably would have been writting a lot of letters saying how ah mazing these books are and you just cant stop there.
Great and easy read. Young Adult book series that is enjoyable and keeps the reader on their toes. I read the series BEFORE the tv show and was disappointed with the TV Show. This series may deserve a Re-Read!
I LOVED these books! I finished them in just hours. The suspense of A, and the tragic story of the 4 girls and their so called "friend" Alison, kept me turning the pages, hungry for more.
