David Plowden is the author of more than twenty photography books, including Bridges: The Spans of North America, Vanishing Point: Fifty Years of Photography, and Requiem for Steam. He lives in Winnetka, Illinois.
Nothing exceptional here. I read the Heart of the Sea and was looking for a photo/historical book on Nantucket. I saw the last name "Coffin" and thought perfect, a direct tie to both the story of the Essex and the founders of Nantucket. I also had just read David McCullough's Brave Companions. David Plowden is a former classmate and life long friend of McCullough's and so another timely connection. But alas, simply a nice coffee table book. The pictures I found to be nothing spectacular. Nice but not book worthy IMO. I agree with the previous reviewer completely.
I'm immensely fond of Plowden's photography work, but this one is a very early effort, and in color, no less. He's not found his voice as a photographer yet in this book, and as far as books on Nantucket go, it's not terribly good. Move past this one to Plowden's later works, and you'll see a master of the medium-format camera.
