L’ Apologia di Socrate fu composto da Platone in età giovanile ed è uno dei suoi dialoghi più noti. Si tratta del resoconto più attendibile di cui disponiamo del processo contro Socrate, della sua autodifesa e della sua condanna. La versione qui presentata è quella di Francesco Acri, insigne filosofo e storico della filosofia della seconda metà dell’Ottocento.

Plato (Greek: Πλάτων), born Aristocles (c. 427 – 348 BC), was an ancient Greek philosopher of the Classical period who is considered a foundational thinker in Western philosophy and an innovator of the written dialogue and dialectic forms. He raised problems for what became all the major areas of both theoretical philosophy and practical philosophy, and was the founder of the Platonic Academy, a philosophical school in Athens where Plato taught the doctrines that would later become known as Platonism.
Plato's most famous contribution is the theory of forms (or ideas), which has been interpreted as advancing a solution to what is now known as the problem of universals. He was decisively influenced by the pre-Socratic thinkers Pythagoras, Heraclitus, and Parmenides, although much of what is known about them is derived from Plato himself.
Along with his teacher Socrates, and Aristotle, his student, Plato is a central figure in the history of philosophy. Plato's entire body of work is believed to have survived intact for over 2,400 years—unlike that of nearly all of his contemporaries. Although their popularity has fluctuated, they have consistently been read and studied through the ages. Through Neoplatonism, he also greatly influenced both Christian and Islamic philosophy. In modern times, Alfred North Whitehead famously said: "the safest general characterization of the European philosophical tradition is that it consists of a series of footnotes to Plato."

Ricordo poco o nulla della filosofia studiata a scuola, non è mai stato il mio forte sinceramente, ma ora eccoci qua in piena crisi post quarto di secolo a leggere Platone. Chi l'avrebbe mai detto.

Comunque sia abbastanza inutile farne una recensione direi, ma ne consiglio vivamente lettura. Molto interessante.

Sicuramente un buon punto di partenza per approcciarsi all’autore. È bene sottolineare che in queste pagine si trova quasi unicamente la difesa che Socrate fa di se stesso contro le accuse che lo hanno portato, per l’appunto, in tribunale.

Vengono toccati i temi della sapienza e della virtù, da ricercarsi sopra ogni cosa. Della morte e della sua non intrinseca malvagità.

Este libro contiene los textos "Apología de Socrates" y "Critón" organizados de una manera que facilita la lectura, esta edición de Salim la verdad que está muy bien, recomiendo.

Platón retrata a Socrates de forma magistral en el texto, dando una nueva perspectiva del infame juicio al que fue sometido. El libro completo es fascinante y funciona como una especie de "Crónica de una muerte anunciada", a pesar de que es bien sabido que Socrates terminó bebiendo la cicuta, uno no puede sino esperar un desenlace distinto, aún cuando es bien sabido que no había ninguna manera viable de que se salvara.

Llega a ser desgarradora la escena del pensador esperando a su muerte con toda la tranquilidad del mundo mientras sus seguidores intentan a toda costa entregarle medidas de salvación.

Esta llamada "cuna de la democracia" muestra su verdadero rostro en el momento en que se arroja el veredicto final, y es algo verdaderamente desolador.

For to fear death, gentlemen, is nothing else than to think one is wise when one is not; for it is thinking one knows what one does not know.
For no one knows whether death be not even the greatest of all blessings to man, but they fear it as if they knew that it is the greatest of evils. And is not this the most reprehensible form of ignorance, that of thinking one knows what one does not know?


Let us consider in another way also how good reason there is to hope that it is a good thing.

For the state of death is one of two things: either it is virtually nothingness, so that the dead has no consciousness of anything, or it is, as people say, a change and migration of the soul from this to another place. And if it is unconsciousness, like a sleep in which the sleeper does not even dream, death would be a wonderful gain.

But on the other hand, if death is, as it were, a change of habitation from here to some other place, and if what we are told is true, that all the dead are there, what greater blessing could there be, judges?

Great piece of classical literature and great example of Socrates rethorical dialogues. The way Socrates dismantles his opponents argument using their own logic is simply perfect. Would recommend this reading to people who are learning debate and philosophy.
