Kate Beacham had had a bad day. After almost being assaulted in an alley by three masked bigots, she arrived home to find her beloved stallion lying dead in her driveway with a note reading YoU'Re nExt. When she opened it, words magically appeared: Get out of the house, quick. Still holding the shotgun, she obeyed; and saw riders on horseback gallop from a hole in midair, pursued by a nightmarish flying thing like a cross between a dragon and a shark. Good thing she had the shotgun, or there would have been no hope for Kate, the riders, and both their worlds.
Once before a woman from our world had saved the realm of Glenraven. Now another must do it again -- or her own world will be forfeit, too....

Bradley's first published novel-length work was Falcons of Narabedla, first published in the May 1957 issue of Other Worlds. When she was a child, Bradley stated that she enjoyed reading adventure fantasy authors such as Henry Kuttner, Edmond Hamilton, and Leigh Brackett, especially when they wrote about "the glint of strange suns on worlds that never were and never would be." Her first novel and much of her subsequent work show their influence strongly.
Early in her career, writing as Morgan Ives, Miriam Gardner, John Dexter, and Lee Chapman, Marion Zimmer Bradley produced several works outside the speculative fiction genre, including some gay and lesbian pulp fiction novels. For example, I Am a Lesbian was published in 1962. Though relatively tame by today's standards, they were considered pornographic when published, and for a long time she refused to disclose the titles she wrote under these pseudonyms.
Her 1958 story The Planet Savers introduced the planet of Darkover, which became the setting of a popular series by Bradley and other authors. The Darkover milieu may be considered as either fantasy with science fiction overtones or as science fiction with fantasy overtones, as Darkover is a lost earth colony where psi powers developed to an unusual degree. Bradley wrote many Darkover novels by herself, but in her later years collaborated with other authors for publication; her literary collaborators have continued the series since her death.
Bradley took an active role in science-fiction and fantasy fandom, promoting interaction with professional authors and publishers and making several important contributions to the subculture.
For many years, Bradley actively encouraged Darkover fan fiction and reprinted some of it in commercial Darkover anthologies, continuing to encourage submissions from unpublished authors, but this ended after a dispute with a fan over an unpublished Darkover novel of Bradley's that had similarities to some of the fan's stories. As a result, the novel remained unpublished, and Bradley demanded the cessation of all Darkover fan fiction.
Bradley was also the editor of the long-running Sword and Sorceress anthology series, which encouraged submissions of fantasy stories featuring original and non-traditional heroines from young and upcoming authors. Although she particularly encouraged young female authors, she was not averse to including male authors in her anthologies. Mercedes Lackey was just one of many authors who first appeared in the anthologies. She also maintained a large family of writers at her home in Berkeley. Ms Bradley was editing the final Sword and Sorceress manuscript up until the week of her death in September of 1999.
Probably her most famous single novel is The Mists of Avalon. A retelling of the Camelot legend from the point of view of Morgaine and Gwenhwyfar, it grew into a series of books; like the Darkover series, the later novels are written with or by other authors and have continued to appear after Bradley's death.
Her reputation has been posthumously marred by multiple accusations of child sexual abuse by her daughter Moira Greyland, and for allegedly assisting her second husband, convicted child abuser Walter Breen, in sexually abusing multiple unrelated children.

Bei "Im Schatten der Burg" handelt es sich um den zweiten Teil zu "Glenraven".
Den ersten Band habe ich vor einiger Zeit gelesen und habe nur noch wage Erinnerungen daran. 😅
Aber das war hier gar nicht schlimm. Eigentlich bekommt man in diesem Buch alle Informationen, die man braucht und muss sich nicht unbedingt an die Handlung in "Glenraven" erinnern. 😊
Kate als Protagonistin fand ich einerseits toll, andererseits fand ich sie auch oft nervig, da sie dazu neigt, in Selbstmitleid zu zerfliesen. 🙈
Alle anderen Personen im Buch bleiben eher blass und ihr Verhalten wird nur wenig erklärt. Lediglich Rhiana, eine der Glenravener, und Callion, der feindliche Magier, werden noch etwas besser beleuchtet. 🤔
Trotzdem hatte ich Spaß beim Lesen. Die Story ist spannend und lässt sich leicht lesen. Außerdem beweist das Buch sehr viel Humor. 😊
Ich mag es, wie die Magie in der Geschichte beschrieben ist und wie die gesellschaftlichen Unterschiede zwischen Glenraven und der Welt der Menschen immer mal wieder angesprochen werden.
Das Buch spielt vor über 20 Jahren und selbst ich habe hin und wieder gestaunt, wie sehr sich die Welt seitdem verändert hat, wie soll sich da ein Wesen aus einer anderen Welt innerhalb weniger Tage anpassen? 🤭
Ich kann das Buch auf jeden Fall weiterempfehlen. 😊

From the very start, I was reminded of the Diane Duane book "So You Want to Be a Wizard". In that book, like this, a random book opens to be a guide to wizardry. Again alike the average person can't read the magical notes.
Unlike Duane's book however, this one was blocked by magic in a way that I found intriguing.
I had read this before, but didn't realize it until I found where the renegade Callion was feeding the creatures from the Rift. It had an intriguing element in that one member of the party of adventurers was a traitor. Even having read it before, I couldn't remember who. And not being able to figure out the ending before I was halfway through made this a truly excellent book.

Fortsetzung von "Glenraven". Sattelmacherin Kate wird von Unbekannten drangsaliert, weil sie eine Hexe ist. Und dann tauchen plötzlich 4 Leute aus dem Zauberreich Glenraven auf, die auf der Flucht vor einem Monster sind.
Ein Spätwerk von Zimmer Bradley. Richtig warm wurde ich mit dem Werk dieser Autorin bisher nicht, die man sicher als Fantasy-Vielschreiberin bezeichnen kann. Ich habe noch den Roman "The Mists of Avalon" im Regal, wo ich mich erinnere, dass er in meinen jungen Jahren ein Riesenbestseller war. Vielleicht gefällt mir das besser.

Eine spannende Geschichte aus dieser Welt und der Welt Glenravens.
Auch wenn mir die Protagonisten die meiste Zeit völlig unbekannt waren, hat dieses Buch genauso viel Spaß gemacht wie Glenraven 1

This was an interesting book, but a frustrating one as well. The fantasy part works quite well, but there's a "murder mystery" part which doesn't. I hate it when an author explicitly says, through characters and story, that a character or group of characters can't be guilty, and then they are. That's just not playing fair with the reader. In this case, the authors state very clearly that certain entire races of beings CANNOT use magic. So, of course, one of them turns out to be a powerful mage, and the reader is NEVER given an explanation for:
1) Why everyone is wrong about said entire race being magicless
2) Why no one could detect said mage's magic
3) How that mage could damp down everyone else's magic in weird ways
4) How that mage LEARNED to use magic in the first place
There's also a romance story that just doesn't work. Two characters with very different backgrounds just randomly get the hots for each other. It felt really forced.
The overall grand adventure was much better, and the main villain was remarkably creepy, as well as the most forward-thinking villain you could imagine, literally planning a generation ahead. That story is why this book is worth reading.
The secondary story, about the townspeople being so easily stirred up against a pagan in their midst, felt a little forced, but unfortunately possible. I had trouble with the setup, and why she was there in the first place, since that was all before the start of the book.

The second book is just as enjoyable as the first book. I liked the magic in this word and the quest. I read this so long ago yet I still have fond memories of this book. Ms. Bradley is quite the writer. There are many writers like this anymore.

Second in the Glenraven series, this is a good fantasy. Mary Zimmer Bradley and Holly Lisle are hard to beat.
