Blood & Loyalty is an urban, dystopian western with fantasy elements and BIPOC representation. Years after the Death Sagas war, multiple factions are preparing for war against the Republic, a despotic regime centered on control and world dominance. Several rival factions are introduced to the reader. All factions use violence and gunslinging to complete their goals. All characters in this story are morally grey. In order to maintain their freedom, these rival factions must band together to fight this war.
This book has several triggers including on page graphic violence, torture, gore, SA, and child unaliving.
I struggled to connect with the characters in this story. There are a lot of characters introduced, each with their own interesting personality, but I didn’t get to spend enough time with each one to understand the decisions made. There are very few likable characters. I liked StreetLife and Elvira, but the rest unapologetically entered into violence often, no remorse.
The plot was medium paced throughout with several fighting sequences.
I really enjoyed the world building in this book. There were layers to the conflicts between the factions and the political and social posturing required for survival. There is a God associated magic system that was different and interesting.
This book does have spice, 🌶️🌶️🌶️, however these scenes are mostly associated to SA.
Overall, I enjoyed the writing style and world building. This book reminded me of a western Quentin Tarantino movie.

I wasn’t sure Blood & Loyalty was going to be for me when I picked it up, but this book proved that you never really know how much you’ll love a story until you give it a chance.
From the opening bloodbath to the revenge-fueled hunt that follows, I was completely hooked. The tension between loyalty, vengeance, and the fight for the future of the Plains kept me turning pages, and the characters felt real, flawed, and unforgettable.
A gritty, action-packed read with high stakes and plenty of blood and lead.

I almost never give a one star review or dnf a book, but the sexualization, condoning, or even portraying rape as some kind of grey area under any circumstance is inexcusable. One of the main PROTAGONISTS brutally rapes his wife several chapters in and we are supposed to accept this as a necessary evil because of some bs internal dialogue we get from her. That’s just rapist fantasy mindset. From what I have seen in the reviews the portrayal of women does not improve. I’m really sad, I always go into a book ready to love it, but my hardline in the sand is not portraying all SA no matter what as wrong. No means no and yes spousal rape is rape.

Audio book version and it was good ! Lots of action and sound effects. Definitely different from my norm but we need to do that and shake it up sometimes. Give it a whirl !

From the first page to the last I was hooked.
There are just so many layers to this story that it has a lot of potential to branch off and become a large book series. I can already see a prequel, sequel and so much more.
Action, adventure, blood, loyalty, money, drugs, prostitutes and power.
These key words merely describe the journey that Avery Brown takes you on.
Enemies become comrades as another war brews and everyone has no choice but to put their grudges aside and work together for the sake of their freedom.
Despite this, there is still tension between enemies that can be felt from their retorts and daggered glares.
I cannot stress how layered this story is. The events and characters just keep on giving with endless action. You have groups of people with different beliefs that are coming together as one, but their differences aren't resolved. This causes a lot of friction between certain characters and you can feel their rivalry coming from the pages.
Each character has a very distinctive way of talking which I was impressed with granted there are quite a few characters that you are introduced to throughout this book.
I felt both women and men had different tones of speech that complemented their genders.
There is a character called Fat Pockets which has a lyrical dialogue that often rhymes, I found this rather interesting and often enjoyed reading his speech.

What can I say? This book intrigued me as there are not many Western books that I read. This one caught my eye with the blurb, and I have to say it’s a ride that’s for sure. Set in a fictional “Wild West”, the Blood Saga doesn’t skimp on the gore. It’s a good book, and I was eager to read it as the story progressed. I do have to say some of the characters are a bit one-dimensional but don’t detract from the story too much. Some grey areas are brought up in the story, as well as a sense of Good versus Evil. Though in all actuality none of the characters are innocent to bloodshed. Okay, one of the protagonist's daughter might be a little innocent, but that was just a side character. Overall, the book doesn’t skimp on the gore and the descriptions of bloodshed and shows the evil side of the characters.

I have not read a book like this before. This fits into multiple genres, such as urban western, dark fantasy and thriller. I’ll try my best to review this, but there is really no proper way to explain this that will do justice. Please bear with me. First, let’s get this out of the way. Check your triggers because this book has them all.
So let me set the scene. This is a dystopian world where Marshall Stryfe, Commander of The Republic, runs an oppressive regime. He is fighting for total control. It reads like the 1800s Wild West, but they talk in modern slang and smoke Kush (good ass weed).
Baron Black and his son, Captain BB have their own soldiers and are fighting against The Republic. They want to unite all the local gangs so they can be stronger. The problem is that the local gangs have beef with each other.
First there’s NoLove. He is the leader of a small gang called Da Mobb. While Da Mobb is out doing Mob things (robbing and killing), they end up killing a member of the Shyne gang. The Shynes are run by a very dangerous guy named Alkada. And of course, he wants revenge.
The police are trying to get justice, but they’re being run by a corrupt mayor/pimp named Fat Pockets.
There are also several other things going on, including a separate war amongst the gods.
If you enjoyed the Netflix movie “The Harder They Fall” starring Idris Elba, you may love this. Just add a mixture of the movie Menace to Society and the TV show Game of Thrones.
You should go into this book knowing that you will need to take notes early on. You will need to identify who is who, and to whom he/she belongs. I wish the author had included a character tree. I filled the first quarter of my book with transparent sticky notes. There are a few heavy scenes that will make the average person pause and put the book down. These scenes include r*** and the murder of an infant. Yes, really heavy stuff.
But once you get past that, the book flows well and is written well. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Picking up book two immediately.
I can’t wait to see the battles between HardBody and TwoFace, Alkada and NoLove, and Fat Pockets and Captain BB. I also have a feeling that Alkada’s daughter (Nefertiti) will be trouble. And hopefully, we'll find out what happened in the Death Sagas. Let’s go!

Blood & Loyalty has a strong and interesting concept at its core. The blend of fantasy with a cowboy, gang-led world stands out, and it’s very cinematic in its scope. The different gangs and character dynamics feel well considered, and I liked that the characters sit in that moral grey area rather than being clearly good or bad, which suits the tone of the story.
It is also very gritty and brutal, and it doesn’t hold back on the harsher side of that world. That will definitely appeal to readers who enjoy darker, morally complex stories, and I can see why it will find a strong audience.
For me personally though, it wasn’t quite my taste. Some of the content, particularly around how women are treated within the story, was difficult for me to sit with, even understanding it as part of the world being portrayed. That, combined with the overall tone, meant I didn’t fully connect with it.
Overall, it is an ambitious and well constructed story with a strong idea at its centre. It just wasn’t quite the right fit for me personally.

I enjoyed this, but I didn’t absolutely love it. The story definitely had my attention, and I liked where it was going, but it just wasn’t really my style. I loved the world-building and the action, but some scenes were just a little too much for my taste.
The world was interesting, and I’m curious to see where the series goes next. There were some really good moments, but there were also a few where I was just like, WTF?
I’m glad I read it, and I don’t regret picking it up. It wasn’t a favorite, but it was still a good read, and I’m interested enough to continue the series.

I read the blurb for this book, and I was excited for a Western that would also grapple with theological concepts, specifically good versus evil. The blurb did NOT mention that this book contains graphic sexual violence scenes, physical abuse towards women and men, and consistent gore. Had I known this, I would not have read it.
Avery is a talented writer. He juggles numerous storylines, uses dialects to distinguish characters and their respective lands, and poses philosophical concepts for readers to consider. Avery’s skill and talent is 5-star.
My rating of 4-star denotes how the blurb did not reveal adult theme content. If I were to rate this text based on this question: “Did I enjoy reading this book?” My rating would be 1-star. I don’t enjoy reading about a pregnant woman being raped by her husband, or women slapped by men, or men being sexually assaulted via instrumentation. These are not topics I want to read.
My 4-Star rating is indicative of me separating my dislike for the content from Avery’s writing skill.

It all starts with an angry tyrant threatening to eliminate the free will of those surrounding him all because of war. Even the gods above are involved, and the world is turned on its head. To win, sacrifices must be made, and people have to trust or not to bring the world together to bring back the peace and sanity of the world. This is the first installment of what could be a stellar series.
From reading the description, I was expecting a graphic novel. Nevertheless, as I read on, the content was undoubtedly graphic, and I'm starting to see how the book description and storyline were headed. The imagery, plot, characters, and climax were so vivid and thoughtful that it was easy to get swooped into investing in the book. Even though some parts were obscenely graphic, it wasn't a massive overload, and everything weaved, connected, and served a purpose to the storyline. It was what was to be expected.
There was nothing in the book I disliked. The book was exceptionally well-edited, written, and structured. I am going to recommend it to those in need of an exciting fantasy adventure. I am eagerly awaiting the release of the second book in Blood Sagas. For these reasons, I am awarding this book five stars.

This one took me a minute to get into, but then I found myself caught up in the story. This was different from anything that I have read in a while. The back describes it as an urban fantasy western thriller. But I also got a strong dystopian vibe from it, it is definitely a mix of genres.

The world-building is layered and brutal, structured around three major factions:
The Shyne — led by Alkada. Ruthless outlaws with their own codes, values, and belief systems. Violent, merciless, but not chaotic they move with purpose and loyalty, and they believe deeply in retaliation and honor within their world.

The Republic — ruled by Marshall Stryfe. A dictator, not a leader. He doesn’t believe in democracy, he believes in empire. Global domination, control, and absolute power. His rule is fueled by manipulation, fear, and conquest.
Then you have The Others, the pivotal side players who shift the entire balance of power especially Baron Black, who becomes the connective force trying to unite rival leaders against the Republic in a fight for freedom and self-governance. Never claiming victory would be peaceful.
One standout character is Fat Pockets, the mayor of Keystone a power-hungry control freak with no backbone, desperate for relevance, status, and authority. He aligns with whoever benefits him most, mistaking access for influence and proximity for power.
This book is raw, violent, gritty, and unapologetic. It’s about power, loyalty, survival, and control. Old rivalries collide with new alliances. Grudges don’t disappear they evolve. Every deal made creates a new enemy. Every alliance builds future betrayal.
At its core, this is a story about loyalty, respect, community, and survival, even when those values are built through bloodshed and brutality.

"Blood & Loyalty" completely pulled me into its brutal, unforgiving world from the very beginning. If you're looking for a light fantasy, this definitely isn't it. This is a gritty mix of dark fantasy, dystopian western, crime, and action where loyalty is everything, betrayal comes with a price, and nobody is truly safe. The world Avery Brown created feels massive, with rival factions, shifting alliances, and enough political tension to keep you constantly wondering who's going to make the next move.
The cast of characters is one of the biggest strengths of this book. There are a lot of names and moving pieces, but each faction has its own personality and purpose. I especially loved watching the relationships evolve as enemies were forced to work together against an even bigger threat. Nobody is purely good or evil, and that moral gray area made every decision feel unpredictable.
The action never really lets up. There are intense battles, shocking moments, and plenty of violence, so definitely check the content warnings before diving in. The pacing kept me turning pages because every chapter seemed to reveal another twist or raise the stakes even higher. While it took me a little time to get familiar with all of the characters and the world-building, once everything started clicking, I was completely invested.
What stood out the most for me was how the story constantly explored what loyalty really means. It's not just about standing beside someone—it's about the sacrifices you're willing to make, the lines you'll cross, and the consequences that follow every choice. Those themes gave the story more depth beyond all of the action and bloodshed.
If you enjoy dark fantasy filled with morally gray characters, outlaw factions, revenge, political conflict, and nonstop action, I definitely recommend giving "Blood & Loyalty" a chance. Just know you're starting an epic saga, and by the time you reach the final page, you'll probably be ready to jump straight into the next book.

Every indie author’s debut deserves a five-star review. Provided I finish reading it, they can count on me for that much at least.
I am not the intended reader for Avery Brown’s debut. That means I am not an ideal reviewer either.
This book reads like a gritty and gory graphic novel superhero adventure. It is the first half of a multi part story about rival gangs who band together to defend their turf from a hostile empire bent on total domination.
The protagonist is a morally grey, noble-but-humble, natural leader with an animal familiar and an ability to commune with gods. While others around him battle for turf, he battles for the souls of his children in a tug-of-war between good and evil.
The ideal reader of this story, in my opinion, is an adult male with an interest in violence, violent sexuality, gore, and magical realism.
The best aspects of this novel are the male character archetypes. And it is clear from the prose that this is where the author put most of his energy.
Alkada, NoLove, Hard Body, Baron Black, Fat Pockets, and many others are meticulously detailed for the reader. What each character wants is clearly laid out. There appears to be little in the way of subtext to consider.
As expected with any debut novel, there are deficiencies as well. The author has acknowledged issues with his portrayal of female characters and has a plan in place to make some changes in future additions to the series. I applaud him for that.
In the meantime, I would strongly advise him to include a variety of trigger warnings and to give this book a spice rating of five chilli peppers.
I would further suggest that he make it clear to readers that this novel is part one of a multi-volume story.

Nope.
The synopsis seemed intriguing, as did the author's backstory. Unfortunately, this book reads like it was written by a very violent pre-pubescent who is ultimately unfamiliar with reality.
The author takes the first 20 pages of the book setting a scene wherein four armed hoodlums enter a rowdy bar, and are noted and even recognized by other armed patrons of the establishment. One of the four waits at the door while three go directly to a back room where the guards dematerialize at a nod. One of the three waits at that door while two enter to find about a dozen people engaging in various nefarious acts of business surrounding a table full of drugs and money. Insults and names are exchanged, and then the entire scene wraps up with the following:
Now, if you're the kind of reader who needs an author to repeatedly punctuate gunshots with the word 'blam', and are capable of suspending disbelief to the point where a back room full of drugs and money would not also be accompanied by any number of guns in the hands of those 12 individuals in the room, all fully prepared to use those guns instead of trading insults and names and waiting to be shot in the head by one of the two assailants, as if they were patiently standing in line waiting to be shot, and that said single hoodlum is capable of 10 headshots in just a few seconds, and not one of those 12 persons ducked for cover causing a miss or even a glancing shot, then this book might be for you. Who am I to judge? I personally found it a bit unreadable and at this point decided that my time is worth more than what this book could possibly have to offer.

I started this book hoping to be entertained after watching a glowing review and receiving it as a gift from the author. From the beginning, the story introduced a large cast of characters who felt as though they had been dropped into a Western-inspired version of Grand Theft Auto, each with their own goals and motivations before being unleashed upon one another.
The book is marketed as an urban fantasy, but the fantasy elements left me wanting much more. The only notable supernatural aspect revolves around what I can only describe as "gods," as the book never clearly explains what Dempaku or Mugasa actually are. Even then, these elements play a relatively minor role in the story. I found myself craving deeper world-building and a plot more firmly centered on these fantastical concepts. Combined with the book's hints at oppression by the Republic, there was potential for a rich and meaningful urban fantasy that explored both magic and societal conflict in greater depth.
Instead, the narrative focuses heavily on hip-hop-inspired characters and, in my view, relies too often on stereotypes. As the story progressed, these portrayals became increasingly prominent and ultimately distracting. Even more troubling was the depiction of women throughout the novel. "Morally gray" does not feel like an accurate description of these characters or themes. Rather, the book presents what I perceived as deep misogyny and a profoundly negative view of women and their purpose.
There was one female character I hoped would offer a different perspective, but her storyline ultimately became the final breaking point for me. Her brutal sexual assault, followed by her continued devotion to and love for her abuser, completely turned me away from the book. What could have been a nuanced exploration of trauma instead felt deeply uncomfortable and left me unable to connect with the story any further.

I was given a copy of this book from the author, to provide an honest review.
Avery Brown is an American author who was inspired to put pen to paper after the passing of a close friend due to the conduct of the Police. This story is the author’s debut work, but they are currently working on a dark fantasy series about the people of the Indian Nations.
Set in a dystopian meets western land, The Blood Sagas follows the story of a man known as Alkada, who is on a mission to adhere to a code of loyalty and find those responsible for killing one of his own.
He sets out on a mission to find the people, the Mob responsible for killing one of his.
What now ensues is a trial of blood and many, many bodies.
Because their life is not an easy one. It's full of hardships, but it is a life that can be fulfilling for those that are loyal to the life, loyal to the code they must adhere to. But for them to survive and achieve their goals, enemies will become friends, and deals are made for the greater good.
This story weaves a tale of loyalty, betrayal and sacrifice with blood, lots of blood.

The way the author is able to have multiple story lines that meld into one story is show case of their talent. However, I did not find the story to be intriguing or hold my interest. I am not saying it’s not a good story; it just wasn’t for me personally. If you are a reader who enjoys a good dystopian story where the main characters are very morally grey, then I dare say this one story you would very much enjoy.

The Blood Sagas : Book 1 - Blood & Loyalty is a black & african american urban fiction novel by the author Avery Brown, published in January 2023. This is Avery’s first novel and it’s a masterpiece. It’s a story of tyranny, solidarity , and divine war. It’s a well-written introduction to a dark and epic saga. It’s an epic tale of murder, treachery, loyalty, and vengeance. It’s got graphics, urban slang, and sex scenes. One of the best parts of this novel is its examination of how a bully’s actions affect the people he seeks to take over. Brown vividly portrays the struggles of the downtrodden and the impact they have on bringing disparate communities together to fight oppression. The concept of solidarity rings true throughout the novel, showing the power of putting aside disagreements and working together for a common cause. The author deftly navigates this intricate network of relationships, showing how relationships are forged in the midst of adversity. The world-working in “Blood and Loyalty” is striking and vivid, moving perusers to a domain where divine beings and humans impact. The use of graphic illustrations brings the characters and their surroundings to life and adds depth and visual appeal to the narrative. The story moves at a steady pace, alternating between action-packed scenes and more reflective scenes of character growth. The plot is loaded up with exciting bends in the road, keeping perusers drew in and anxious to uncover the following disclosure. The book is very lengthy (400+ pages) however certainly worth perusing as I would see it. “ The Blood Sagas : Blood & Loyalty” is a book series that makes certain to fulfill. Whether you love action, adventure, or simply extraordinary narrating, you will not be disappointed. Highly recommended from my side.

When everyone’s a villain, how can you root for anyone?
In The Blood Sagas Book 1: Blood & Loyalty, Avery Brown presents a world with no heroes, only killers guided by their own sense of morality: money, drugs, murder, and revenge. Survival is the only constant, and loyalty is purely transactional. By the end, I didn’t find myself rooting for anyone or particularly caring who lived or died.
The prose is simple, fast, and easy to read. Brown favors momentum over immersion, relying heavily on telling rather than showing. This appears to be a stylistic choice, reinforced by a staccato sentence structure that keeps the story moving but often at a distance.
