[ { JAMES (REVISED) [ JAMES (REVISED) ] BY HIEBERT, D EDMOND ( AUTHOR )JUL-01-2006 PAPERBACK } ] by Hiebert, D Edmond (AUTHOR) Jul-01-2006 [ Paperback ]
As in the other commentaries, Dr. Hiebert uses his knowledge of Greek to practical effect for pastors and laypeople. He expositional approach is well-suited for personal or public study. The author writes in a way that reflects James's practicality. He provides a bibliography of further reading.
This book is an excellent verse-by-verse work on the book of James. Verse by verse may not even be the right way to say that. Perhaps it is better to say it word by word. That is the level of detail in writing. It is very in-depth. I enjoyed that aspect, though it is heavy at times.
My one knock on the book is the author’s approach to the text of the Bible. He utilizes the ASV as a base version and frequently speaks against the KJV or TR readings. Some will not care about that, but it was a negative aspect of the writing.
I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys a deep exegetical look at Biblical texts and any preacher or teacher wishing to teach from the book of James. Though the book can be read cover to cover, it is also an excellent reference volume.
An excellent commentary for preaching or teaching James. The book of James, one of the most straightforward epistles, certainly has its oddities: no Gospel, nearly all imperatives, with some tougher verses that need digging. This commentary is more technical than practical with so many layers it may overwhelm you. The purpose is achieved: you'll be transported back to James' original intent with this epistle. I'd recommend it with Kent Hughes homiletical commentary for more grounding.
