Our Canadian Flag is a children's picture book written by Maxine Trottier and illustrated by Brian Deines. It is a cursory biography about the creation of the Canadian Flag and the various uses the flag is used for. Today is Flag Day (15 January) and I thought it would be apropos to read this book today.

The Canadian Flag is a national flag consisting of a red field with a white square at its center in the ratio of 1:2:1, in the middle of which is featured a stylized, red, 11-pointed maple leaf charged in the center.

Trottier's text is rather simplistic, straightforward, and informative. It tells the creation, history, and the many uses for the Canadian Flag from orbiting around Earth to more terrestrial duties. Interesting facts about the flag is written in a rectangle beneath the main text, which could be read later for more information. Deines's illustrations are phenomenally drawn and depicted the narrative extremely well.

The premise of the book is rather straightforward. It details how the Canadian Flag was made and I was rather surprised how recent the flag was made – in 1964 a committee was formed to determine the national flag and it was finalized and adopted a year later. This year (2019), marks the fifty-fifth anniversary of the creation of the Canadian Flag.

All in all, Our Canadian Flag is a wonderful and informative book of the creations and importance of the Canadian Flag.

As a vexillologist, I love flags and especially the Canadian flag so of course I loved this book. It explains the story and symbolism behind the flag in a very accessible, simple and clear way. It makes the topic very interesting for the layperson. Imagine if it showed the other candidates like the Pearson Pennant or the one with the beaver and the ice hockey rink.

Maxine Trottier has shown her mastery over the English language, taking a simple subject and artfully stringing her words into a thing of beauty. “Maple leaves fluttered like pennants of green in the summer. In autumn, they waved their banners of orange, yellow and scarlet.”
Although this is an early elementary resource for children to teach them about the history of the Canadian flag, adults and older students will enjoy the interesting details and beautiful imagery painted through the prose. The large and charming pictures make this an ideal read aloud for a group of young students, however the smaller print insets may be beyond the comprehension of younger children. The information provided in these insets contains the bulk of the educational material, including quotes and historical details about the significance of the maple leaf and the history of the flag.
