Those that love addicts can often find themselves wishing to make sense of the chaos that has come about. Addiction can tear families apart and leave loved ones feeling helpless and alone. "To Those Left Behind" is a compassionate and practical guide for partners and families of addicts. Written by licensed therapist Travis Thompson, this book offers a therapeutic perspective on addiction and its impact on those around the addict.
From understanding family and couple dynamics to addressing mental health and trauma, each chapter provides insights and tools for healing and moving forward. Whether you're a spouse, partner, family member, or friend of an addict, this book will help you navigate the complexities of addiction and find a path to healing for yourself and your loved one. This book will give you a deeper understanding of addiction and its impact on families and loved ones. You'll have practical tools and strategies for navigating the challenges of addiction, and a roadmap for healing and moving forward.
In the first pages, the author, a licensed therapist, warns that his personality seeps through in his writing and his humor is a bit dry. If you don’t click with this style, he says, it could be a long read. Well, I think he’s right about that. The tone just didn’t connect with me.
But I think there are absolutely those who will be drawn into this book specifically because of those elements. Where I found it a little brash, someone else might enjoy the telling-it-like-it-is vibe. While I wished for a little more compassion, folks who feel like other self-help is too saccharine may find this book a breath of fresh air.
And I think we need all hands on deck when it comes to supporting those who love someone dealing with addiction. The author draws on his clinical experience and academic understanding of these issues, and it’s clear together they can help inspire healing.
