Even though Gina cancels her wedding mere days before the ceremony, she’s determined to keep her reservation for a famous honeymoon suite in Dallas.
Enter Race, a Texas cowboy who cleans up rather well, and who declares himself her substitute groom for the week.
Thinking her best friend hired Race, Gina goes along with the fun – at first. But is Race really who he seems? Why is Gina’s ex-fiance staying at the same hotel? And just how far is Gina prepared to go with Race and that model-worthy face of his on their "honeymoon"?

The premise of this story sounded very interesting BUT while the story was so-so, the sex scene was AWFUL! I felt like i was reading a romance novel written in the 70's! I understand that this story was re-released in 2012, and had originally been published in 1995, BUT EVEN with that understanding, the sex was still AWFUL!
For the exception of the word "breast" and "silken shaft" every other body part was alluded to in some descriptive, flowery languange which did NOTHING for me! Case in point; "her most secret self" ... what do YOU think this refers to?! Let me directly quote the line,"... he tested the tight, resilient walls of her most secret self ...". Really??!!
Oh wait, i have another one,"... it burst in their minds with unimagined splendor, flooding their bodies with life and grace and delicate, merging wholeness ...". Seriously, couldn't the writer just say they orgasmed???!!!
I originally gave this book 2 stars, but i'm taking one back as i write this review for the horror that i went through while reading that sex scene!
At first I thought this would be a fun read. It had potential but as I continued I found the story a bit too 'virginal' for my taste. You can't tell me a 'woman' of her age could be so untouched and in a couple days jump into bed with a total stranger that she knows for a fact isn't who he said he was?!?!? Don't get me started on the sex, at least I think they had sex. I actually thought I was missing pages from the story until I realized I was reading from my Kindle and it wasn't possible... I feel bad rating it so low because I really think it could have been good...but in the end. I just didn't like it.
Contemporary romance where the wedding is canceled just before and the jilted bride decides to go on the honeymoon hotel because she already paid for it and she doesn't want to let her ex-fiance go there with his new 'wife' that he was cheating with. So Miss Gina Madison is going to use that fancy romantic hotel room and enjoy it... even if it kills her! So when a sexy cowboy knocks on the door hours after checking into the room, Gina thinks that it might be her ex-fiance because he reserved the room next door, but it is a Race Bannister who says that he is a rent-a-gent escort and he is supposed to help her fool her ex Bradley Dillman into thinking that she has moved on and really 'enjoying' that room. Although it is supposed to be just a show, it becomes very real when they find that there is chemistry between them and they have lots of things in common (more then Gina knows because there are some secrets!). Class Garden Hotel's honeymoon suite sounds awful, with pink marble and a statue of the owner's wife... um, not what I would call romantic which just made me laugh, but really you just need a big bathtub and clean sheets for romance in my opinion. Fun story that is well written by a good author who I'm now going to have to look into more of Jennifer Blake's books which are mostly historical English society stories. 100ish pages and kindle freebie
The Rent-A-Groom is a cute title for this story and fit well with the story line. Gina was in love with the idea of being in love but found out her intended groom was a fraud and worse. Feeling mixed up after cancelling her wedding, she goes on her honeymoon alone to a romantic hotel suite.
Race comes to her door with a business card for Rent-A-Gent and wild story that someone has hired him to come to her rescue because her ex and her ex-maid of honor are in the next suite. He spins a tale and she takes a chance while his main gain is to protect her from her ex.
The encounters with Bradley, the ex and Sandra her ex-friend were almost constant as Bradley follows Gina and Race. Race becomes more protective and with the passage of the weekend, Gina begins to fall for him. He becomes more and more protective of her.
The part Etta the hotel maid is delightful with her wisdom and romantic heart and Corey, the young nephew sounds like a child of his age when he thinks he has done something wrong and his ideas on how to ask for an receive forgiveness sound like what most parents show a child; Corey is adorable.
The Rent-A-Groom was romantic, not always realistic but a fun fictional romantic story to be enjoyed as the hunky cowboy turns out to be one of the good guys.
Rent-A-Groom was originally published in 1994 . This is a novella with a little over a hundred pages. This is a contemporary romance. I got this one free in the kindle store a little while back.
Gina finds her fiance in bed with her maid of honor. The wedding is off, but the honeymoon suite was booked and paid for so Gina checks in by herself. Then she finds out that her former fiance is there with his new wife. So, when a handsome man comes calling claiming he is a rent a groom, and knowing way to much about Gina's personal situation, she is initially wary, but the temptation to show off in front of her former lover is too great, so she goes along with the sham. Before long though she begins to suspect Race is not who he claims to be. Sure enough there are some sinister activities, but is Race involved?
This is a cute story. The theme being that we have to take risk sometimes despite the fact we might get hurt. Things were wrapped up in a bit of a hurry, but there is a HEA.
This book would make a nice lunch hour escape. Oveall a C+
Gina cancels her wedding days before it should happen and checks into her dream honeymoon suite in Dallas. Knocking on the door mere minutes after she's checked in, Race introduces himself as her Groom for the night. Bill paid for in full. What's a girl to do?
I couldn't put it down, I really wanted to see the story develop. Great characters, with a mix of "goodies " and "baddies" I wish it had a little bit of an epilogue but still a lovely ending and a very interesting take on a romance. This would make a great chick flick!
It does feel quite dated for a contemporary but I have no idea what people mean about the intimacy scene not being obvious. Body parts are clearly mentioned but thank goodness Blake doesn't descend into the anatomy lesson that so many modern authors seem to feel subsists for a good bedroom scene. It's a bit purple prosey but gives the characters dignity and feeling. If you need the hero to use basic four letter words to tell the heroine how much he wants her then this isn't your jam. The story was a bit too short for the mystery to fully play out. I'll admit I got confused a few times but if you were paying attention, you do kind of get a hint as to who Race might be.
Great read. A little confusing. I seriously didn't know who he was until it all came out. I figured he was undercover but did not expect came to be. Loved the ending.
Another from this collection of Jennifer Blake contemporary romance stories. This is more a novella, and the main character is a bit rigid to put it mildly, but the hero is appealing.
Two weeks before the wedding, Eugenia (Gina) Madison finds her groom Bradley Dillman in bed with the maid of honour. She cancels everything. But she has spent years imaging her honeymoon in the Glass Garden hotel in Dallas, so she checks in by herself. Bradley demands that she let him have the room and when she refuses, he books the suite next door. But then, a man knocks on her door, introduces himself as Race Bannister, says he has been sent to take her to dinner and he’s a knockout. He’s also an escort. She assumes her neighbour and friend arranged him. Gina is a really conservative accountant but she wants to be wild, and he charms his way into her room with a promise that they will go to dinner together and show Brad just what he’s lost. *** Oooh… fake dating trope. Squee. This is part of Jennifer Blake’s back-list and this one was first published in 1995. The thing that really dates it, is the sex. It’s too florid for current tastes. Woe betide she call a penis, a penis, you know? But Race kind of saves it. He’s absolutely wonderful. Too good to be true… snorts. The one night turns odd when Brad and Sandra keep trying to push in. The more they do, the more protective Race gets. And he sleeps on the floor and sticks around when Brad just won’t back off. Days in and Gina has totally fallen for this guy she knows nothing about.
Sandra and she are supposed to be friends but don’t seem friendly at all. (not that I could blame her now) And Gina seems to have no family. Family should have been there for her, you know? But it’s a short novel; maybe there just wasn’t room. It was a quick read and I really liked Race. 3 stars.
Aside from being unrealistic, the story wasn't bad. Nice girl meets boy, who is a client of the company she works for, gets engaged, then breaks it off, but decides to keep the hotel room she booked for their honeymoon. Especially after she finds out he married someone else and wanted to use the room for his honeymoon. So far, so good. However, here is where it gets a little outlandish. She jokingly tells her friend and neighbor that she would love to rub it in her ex-fiance's face that she was not staying at the hotel alone, but with a groom of her own. A rent a groom. And what happens? An extremely attractive man rings the doorbell of her hotel suite, pretending to be said groom. Now, any sane single woman would not let said man in her room without confirming her friend was the one that hired him since no one else knew what she fantasized about, right? Nope. Now I do give the author credit...it was written well enough where you just might be able to believe it is possible that a modern woman is this trusting, but still. Ok, I'll overlook that for the sake of enjoying the story. Then things just continue to make me question what sane woman would continue with the farce beyond dinner...and continue it does. There is a bit of mystery here and it all finally makes sense at the end so overall, I did enjoy reading this. Just take it with a grain of salt...things just do not happen like this!
Sometimes a girl just can't tell who's messing with her love life. Jilted, Gina Madison realizes someone answers her prayer when she wishes for a groom to make her ex-fiancé jealous, and then voila! A rent-a-groom appears! She finds herself with the rent-a-gent, along with her ex-fiance and his soon-to-be new wife at the same romantic hotel. The sexy stranger, Race Bannister, tempts the usually cautious Gina to accept his offer to be her escort. Who sent him and why? Gina doesn't know, but when she shares what should have been her honeymoon suite with Race, the heat is on. With her ex-fiance about to wed the friend who was to be Gina's maid of honor, the hotel staff sees more than their share of excitement.
Just as Gina's old fiancé, Bradley, wasn't what he appeared to be, Race also harbors a deep secret. All Race planned on was doing a job and leaving. When he decides to confess who is really behind his sudden appearance at her door, he fears Gina may never forgive him.
True love, however, has a wise way of breaking down barriers. Jennifer Blake is at her best, spinning this lighthearted, sensual story that proves once in a while it's safe to gamble on what first looks like a dangerous sort of love. Characters are well-developed. Pacing is fast while tension and suspense run high. Race Bannister, The Rent-A-Groom, is worth taking a chance on!

My Thoughts
There are many discussions on why and how to pick a free read for your Kindle, for me the decision was made with this book with two words and they are Texas and Dallas.
This was a short, less than 150 pages novella, that took you on a quick romp with Gina that despite itself actually was quite a nice fun read. There are no real big surprises but the romance it sweet, the suspense is dramatic and all in all if you have nothing to do for a few hours this is a good way to spend them!
Gina cancels her wedding days before the event when she walks in on her fiance in bed with her best friend/maid of honor. She can't cancel the hotel suite booked for the honeymoon so rather than waste it she goes there alone. Unfortunately, her ex-fiance and ex-best friend are staying in the room next to hers. She is embarrassed and doesn't want him to know she is alone so when Race appears telling her he is from Rent-A-Gent and was hired and paid for by a third party to pretend to be her husband she grabs the chance to make it look like she is not alone.
I enjoyed this fun story about Race pretending to be Gina's boyfriend in order to make her ex regret what he lost. I loved the way Gina and Race played up their 'relationship' when her ex and the other woman were around. I have read a lot of romances but this book was actually romantic! I really can't say I have read many stories where the characters are romantic. The twist near the end was amazing. I sure didn't expect it and I love it when a story surprises me like that.
This is a must read, feel good story that I highly recommend.
A very cute short novel about love at first sight, Rent-A-Groom resembles a fairytale. I read a lot of books (lost count of the number really) and this one falls in the category of "fluffy bunny feelings". (**shivers**) Someone once told me that my tastes in books is a little dark (an author). After I read this book, I would agree with her. If I could remember that author's name, I would read her book just because she pays attention. Ms. Blake provides the story with a perfect, virginal woman who has perfect morals and a great looking, protective male in the perfect setting for true love. Not a whole lot of action and little violence, the story still manages to remain interesting. The perfect fairytale...but not a memorable book If you love fairytales, and true love from first sight and can look passed the "no way in hell would this ever would happen" (after all, it is fiction) this story is perfectly perfect. (I'd like to point out I got this was a free book!) I'm going to expose myself to some gratuitous violence now. Zeth, where are you? Happy reading my fellow bookworms!
2 stars This book had me going, and I’m not even sure if it was in a good way. It irked me to a point because I seriously could not figure out what Race's “secret” was. I think the redeeming character in the book was Race, the rent-a-groom, he was the perfect package, you would get so drawn into him and then he had to go all cryptic in his internal dialogue about telling the truth. The author best describes it as ”the jilted bride, guilty bridegroom, substitute wife, and sham lover all sitting down to dinner together. So modern, so false, and such a farce.”
This book almost seemed based on a Garth Brooks song- The Dance. Basically, would you rather enjoy what you had or not have had it at all?
Gina is in her honeymoon suite without her groom. She left him days before the weeding and when he had the gall to insist she give him the room for him and his new bride she knew there was no way she'd give it up. Then Race comes knocking on her door, an all expense paid Rent-a-Gent to teach Gina's cheating groom that she's moved on as well.
This book was pretty predictable. The ending although you could see coming some of the details were faint. I'm not sure it was that believable to me. Not to mention, I don't think relationships really end up going that fast. It was a bit hurried in my opinion.
I did enjoy it. It was a cute quick read that had a good plot and certainly had a few things to think about.
I love Jennifer Blake stories. She was one of the first romance authors I read. Her stories always have a Happily Ever After and this one is no exception. I enjoyed this story and fell in love with the characters in it. Ms. Blake does an outstanding job of developing characters in such a short time, which is particularly difficult in a novella.
If I liked the story so much, then why only three stars? First, even though I love Jennifer Blake stories, I do like a bit more tension or anguish in my love stories. Second, I’m used to her stories being historical and this one is a modern day romance. That’s a hard transition for me to make with her.
It’s a good story and I recommend it to anyone who likes a good romance with a Happily Ever After!
It was a cute story. You really never knew some of the stuff that was going on until the very end, which was a nice surprise with this type of story.
I hate stories that has the characters fall madly in love with each other in a matter of days or weeks, as what happened in this book. Could they care for each other a lot in a couple days? Sure. Could they decide to date after a couple of days? Yeah, why not. Could they fall head-over-heels in love in a couple days? Not a chance.
Other than that, it was a cute, simplistic read. Not one I would pay for necessarily, but it was free, so that made it better. Don't get me wrong, the writing itself isn't bad, it's just the story line and believe-ability was lacking a tad bit.
Not the best, but certainly not the worst I've ever read. Good if you're a hopeless romantic.
I received a free copy on Amazon.ca; this is my honest review. 4 stars. The synopsis reads "who declares himself her substitute groom for the week." The reality is that in the book he only offers for an evening; then he decides to stay two nights and one day (in total). Short and sweet. The beginning sets the story well. Realistic position for an accountant. The make-believe and the real emotions scenes were well played out. The weirdness of having your ex next door was really creepy and made the whole thing plausible. Jerome and Rita were both funny and intuitive. I would've like to read more about Race and Gina's HEA together. Diane was supposed to be the new bride but she's not even describe well, doesn't speak much, and we don't read anything going on such as conversation, kisses or otherwise between her and the Jerk.
Gina cancels her wedding but she's still keeping her reservation for the honeymoon suite. When her ex-fiance calls her to ask for the reservation to use it with his new bride, Gina needs a groom, and fast!
The Rent-A-Groom is a short novel by Jennifer Blake. It's a quick story, sweet and with a happy ending. Gina thinks her best friend hired the groom, but this man, Race, is a mystery. He's hot but sweet and knows about Gina's ex fiance. They have chemistry and I enjoyed their story.
It's too short, but it's fun and cute, with some suspense but not too much surprises, perfect for when you need a light and sweet romance.
The story is short and an easy read. Race & Gina are likable characters and it was funny seeing them turn on the charm to piss of the ex (always fun seeing a cheater get put in his place). Not a totally original story line but who doesn't love a good love story. The twist at the end was a little surprise that I didn't expect so that added to the 4 star rating. Without it likely would have been a 3 star rating.
Also have to put in a note about "Etta" she was so cute :)
I agree with other reviewers, would have been better if it was longer. I would have enjoyed a little more character development but that would make it a full on novel not short. As it is, the story was enjoyable and I read it in one sitting. Would recommend it to those looking for a "just for fun" read.
The plot was constantly changing, at least for Race's motivation, and what he actually was. It changed within the first chapter, from one thing to another, and constantly had me guessing. I didn't accurately guess what he was except for a few brief musings throughout, but wasn't sure until the ending. And that ending left me with very happy feelings.
A very enjoyable read.
However, the sex scene was confusing and weird. The wording makes it seem like she was a virgin, but I could not be sure at first, because they do not come out and say it. I kinda skipped over it, because the wording was so over-the-top dramatically poetic, and did not appeal to me at all. Too much wording, and I just wanted to get on with it.
This was a cute story. Gina is at the same hotel as her ex-fiance and ex-maid of honor/friend. She really doesn't want him to know that she still hasn't meet anyone new even though it's only been two weeks since she left him. So, when Race shows up a her hotel room door says he works at Rent-a-Gent and has been hired by a third party for Gina she reluntantly lets him in. But is he really who he says he is and who else has a few secrets of their own?!
I enjoyed the story and was eager to see what happens and what was really going on but felt like I had to drag myself through alot of dull parts in the story.
Gina decides to go ahead a use the money sweet she had reserved after breaking up with her ex fiancée. The room was in her name, why not. But then there is a knock at her door with a guy named Race who said he was a Rent A Gent, a fake groom to throw her ex off her trail, since he decided to rent the room next to her with the woman she caught him with. Is love in sight or ius there something else going on.
I have not found a fabulous free book in a long time. This one is just another one adding up to being not that great. I could finish it so it wasn't horrible, but it wasn't good. The story line wasn't believable. I just shook my head at the stupidity of the story line. I wish I could take back my hours from reading this book, but I can't. All I can say is that it's done and I don't have to think about it any more. I think I am going to have to buckle down and actually buy some books so I can get some substance back in my reading.
