Most men believe that accountability is the invincible weapon for fighting lust, but many of us have found that this method falls short. It helps for a while, granted, due to the repulsive power of embarrassment. But what's next? We need something more potent if we are to experience lasting victory.

Daryl Wingerd dug up and brushed off the Bible's core explosive device for defeating habitual sexual sin. You won't find this concept in most self-help books on the subject--even Christian ones. I'm convinced you will discover here the volatile material able to finally decimate lust as a pattern of life, in you and in those you help. Like others, you may say, "I've not read a book quite like this for clarifying the biblical way to succeed over this troubling issue."

Women may wish to read this book also. It will help them understand what their husbands and sons may face. Though writing from the man's perspective, the author is not unaware of how lust can become a woman's problem as well. In fact, believers in general may wish to read Delivered by Desire to discover how to overcome habitual sins. The biblical principles will apply.

This is THE BEST BOOK I have read addressing Pornography. It is practical and scriptural and deals with a lot of the preconceived notions that we might have about this issue in a refreshing and thorough way. Not only does it help address what is wrong in our heart and our view of the sexual sins of pornography and masturbation but it shows how we can help others. But even more so how our rhetoric sometimes does not help the person we are trying to help battle this difficult issue.

In my usual fashion I will point out two things that stood out for me. The first was the horrific nature of Pornography and what it does. This is not shown in a gory image as some others have resorted to but instead in a scriptural way. If we truly believe that the scriptures are sufficient for all life and living (2 Timothy 3:16) then we should look to the word of God for such things and Daryl Wingerd does this very well.

The second is how that being delivered BY desire can only be done when one is plugged into the word of God. Constant meditation and not taking the dangers of sin, not just sexual sin but all sin, lightly. There is a great quote in the book by Jim Elliot, 'You are always meditating on something. Why not make it the truth.'

There are many practices that have intruded themselves into the life of local congregations in 2023. Some of those practices have, in some way, eclipsed part of the role of the sacraments. Coffee and doughnuts, for example, have become the place where fellowship and conversation happen more often than not. So, I was delighted to pick up and read a copy of “The Lord’s Supper is a Meal” by Jim Elliff, president and founder of Christian Communicators Worldwide. This teeny 95-page softback is straightforward, moves along easily, and gets to the point quickly.

Elliff and I would disagree on a few things, such as the Lord’s Supper really being a means of grace, the role of Gospel ministers being necessary for administering the sacrament, and such. But the author does such a masterful job in drawing out important details about the supper that I found the book rich and useful.

Most of Elliff’s time is spent in 1 Corinthians 11:17-34, where he explains what happened and what Paul was aiming to correct. Some of the basic highpoints from the book are: (1) The Lord’s Supper was meant to be received often, even weekly. (2) It is a meal that exhibits Gospel fellowship both vertical and horizontal. (3) And it should be a meal that shows division has been healed by Christ’s sacrificial gift to us, for “the Lord’s Supper must be a meal without division” (30).

One of my favorite statements is this short paragraph:

“It was particularly the failure in the horizontal fellowship that Paul addresses in 1 Corinthians 11. When fellowship with others is fractured or forgotten or distorted by status rather than united around Christ, the Lord’s Supper becomes merely one’s own supper. Worse than that, it brings judgment. The meal associated with the sacrifice of Christ must be about our indivisible fellowship built upon the death of Christ” (26).

In the end, even with my disagreements about some underlying assumptions the author has, this is a book worth reading and thinking through. I highly recommend it.

Delivered by Desire by Daryl Wingerd is a book I would recommend to every professing Christian, not only men dealing with struggles with sexual sin. Wingerd has produced a scriptural explanation of the way in which Christians are regenerated or changed after conversion. He shows that while Christians still CAN sin, the lives of authentic Christians will be characterized by righteousness and holiness. This change has nothing to do with personal effort or white-knuckling it through temptations. However, to have an understanding of who you are in Christ, it is essential that a change of mindset occurs. He suggests that most of the problems Christians face with temptations and sin has to do with ignorance about the change Christ has brought about. We get in a repetitive cycle of being down on ourselves (feeling guilty) because we know we are doing wrong but not how to stop. We're more likely to cave into our flesh if we have the false mindset that we remain sinners with dark and deceptive hearts. This book will help believers in Christ to comprehend the way in which we are "new creations" and have already put on the "new self" thanks to what Christ has done. The "old self" has been crucified with Christ. Lastly, I plan to re-read this book--it's that good!

Eliff does a good job drawing out something that is missing from the elements of the Lord’s Supper being passed out in pews on a Sunday Morning. It’s an argument for the communal gathering of saints for the Lord’s Supper. It’s an argument for eating together and participating in the Lord’s Supper together.

I like his perspective on the Lord’s Supper. Much different than any other teaching I’ve ever encountered on this topic. Some things to chew on here.

It is a good book to read especially this book is written for men but women or wife can read it to fully understand him or her husband. Subtitle of this book is: The Encouraging Truth about Christian and Sexual Purity. It is about fighting and fleeing from sexual temptations and how to flee that in godly way. It is full of scriptures and references and encouragement too. It also point out the difference between unbeliever, "Christian", and true Christian how they would respond to this sexual temptation and their heart condition of who they are. I was surprise it didn't mention Romans 7:15-25 which is one of my favorite passage that can be use in this book.
