Intercultural Communication

Rate this book
As communication and transportation technologies shrink global distances and contact with unalike others expands, the necessity for effective intercultural communication becomes paramount. This text provides a solid foundation for applying communication principles to intercultural interactions. A key element in effective intercultural communication is recognizing ethnocentrism. To do so, one must first be aware of the pervasive influence of culture. This book uses the history of intercultural contact to emphasize the layers of collective consciousness that shape the attitudes and beliefs of various peoples. Different worldviews color perceptions, values, and communication patterns. Without an awareness of these differences, intercultural communication can result in misunderstandings, prejudice, stereotypes, and discrimination. Ineffective communication pre¬vents the exchange and exploration of diverse perspectives that can enrich our lives. Through multiple examples, this book teaches the skills of competent intercultural communication so that active, interested participants can engage in the limitless bene¬fits of sharing viewpoints with others in a rapidly changing world. Interesting textbook.

I read over a period of time, slowly.

Did you know in Japan there is no word that translates to “privacy”.

Collectivistic vs. Individualistic

Had tons of great case studies and examples of the concepts.

Plus a great glossary.

Really good textbook with a lot of great concepts and case studies. I found that this book was incredibly thorough on the topic of intercultural studies and communication. For those that are working cross-culturally, the themes and understandings in this book are a must. The progression of the book is well laid out and the authors provide a good mix of teaching with illustrations. Of course, reading an updated version that emphasized more of the technology boom and social media of the last fifteen years would be ideal. Nonetheless, human history is human history and the concepts of intercultural communication hold true. If anything, the progress of internet culture only underscores the concepts that have been learned in this field over the last 100+ years.
