my theroy is that the author is merely telling you his narration of hong kong history and how this city will develop in the future, it is not a seriously researched book. so it's up to you whether to buy his viewpoint, or not.
This book discusses how Hong Kong can achieve actual city-state status and provides suggestions on improving the governance of Hong Kong.
Published more than 10 years ago, this book has been removed from the public libraries in Hong Kong, alongside with other works from the author Wan Chan, due to the library decision makers’ fear for the violation of the national security law which came into effect in 2020. Though the author emphasizes multiple times that seeking independence is never an objective he promotes in the book, promoting independent thoughts and any slightest attempt to think differently from the national rhetoric is only reductive judged as a blatantly seditious move in the eye of the authority.
A manifesto with a funny goal which was summarized by some serious and learned studies, boosted by a contemplation on identity crisis, and cultural, economical and political status of a city/state/polis or a people against its ultimate enemy with a perplexing relation. The author settled on a seemingly smart point: as a city state, HK can be and should be fully political autonomic, which is good for both itself and China. I don't see the slightest possibility the arguments could move even a tiny percent of rationality in a tiny percent of the audience it supposed to target within China, but obviously it can attract a huge number of followers in Hong Kong (which i think it already did). And even the author went through some trouble to try to convince the audience that independence is not desirable(within this stage or even for the distant future), but you still feel the undertones that without the disadvantage of THIS city state, it SHOULD be the destiny. I gave this book 5 stars for the amusement it gave me, and for some pieces which cracked me up by both the arrogance and the boldness of the author.
