Red Magic

Rate this book
Red-headed Caterina von Velsen, a tomboy and superb horsewoman, detests her older sister's husband-to-be. Christoph von Hagen is handsome and brave, but he is also a Casanova, a man with a reputation that stretches from his mountain manor all the way to Vienna. When Caterina’s older sister dies in a riding accident only a week before the wedding, she is forced to take her place. Now Caterina belongs to the very man she believes to be “a cold-hearted rake.”

There is magic in Christoph’s lonely mountain home, as well as in the locket Caterina’s aunt gave her long ago. Misunderstandings and preconceptions hinder the coming of true love, as well as the strange attraction she feels toward her husband’s magnetic, foreign horse master. Set in 18th Century Germany, RED MAGIC tells the story of a young woman’s transition from rebellious girl to adored--and adoring--wife.

Pseudonym for Juliet Waldron

"Not all who wander are lost." Juliet Waldron earned a B. A. in English, but has worked at jobs ranging from artist's model to brokerage. Twenty-five years ago, after the kids left home, she dropped out of 9-5 and began to write, hoping to create a genuine time travel experience for her readers. "Mozart's Wife" won the 1st Independent e-Book Award and still, many years later, garners high praise. I've recently published "My Mozart" which is the companion novel, a passionate story of love and madness told by a young fan. "Genesee," set during the American Revolution won the 2003 Epic Award for Best Historical. Juliet is delighted that both books are again available from Amazon and Books We Love. A historical romance set in German country, PA, "Hand-me-Down Bride," published by Second Wind Publishing, is based on the immigration story of a great grandmother. "Red Magic," a romantic adventure set in 18th Century Austria, tells the story of a spoiled, proud young woman who has to grow up fast when she's forced into a marriage with a man she despises. Her latest novel, "Roan Rose" is a medieval novel "owed" to the last Plantagenent King since the day she was introduced to him by reading "The Daughter of Time," more than fifty years ago.

She enjoys playing doorwoman for cats, long hikes, reading about history and archeology, and making messy gardens with native plants. She rides behind her husband of forty-nine years on his bucket list bike, a Hyabusa. Three granddaughters, one all grown up, make her incredibly proud.

Juliette Waldon is a master of intrigue, adventure, and romance as she transports her readers to strange, exotic lands. Red Magic kept me sitting on the edge of my seat as I followed Catarina's coming of age from a frightened young tomboy to a mature, proactive woman who commits passionately to the man she was fated to marry. Near the story's resolution--as the stakes get higher and the drama increases--I was swept away with unexpected plot twists and turns. This book definitely deserves 5-plus stars!

I enjoy historical fiction and romance in exotic settings so I enjoyed Zauberkraft: Red ~ Magic Colors by Juliette Waldron.

Set in 18th Century Germany, a firey red-haired beauty Catrina and a curley dark haired noble knight have a long and difficult road to finding happiness together after Catirina took the place of her late sister as Christoph bride a week after her sister's death. He is patient with her but he has a history of being a casnova and responsiblities that follow him into his marriage.

He is called into service and she follows fullishly and he comes to rescue her as they both fight for their freedom. Returning to their mountain home it takes time for the betrayal they faced and the friends lost for them to find the peace and happiness that came to be what their parents had wanted in the match in the first place.

Lots of interesting characters, ways of the times, some of the Muslin's ways of the time and lots of interesting things about beliefs, witches and horses.

Even for the low standards held for romance novels, this is *awful.* It's all over the place and is trying to be six different romance novels at once. It completely falls apart around 2/3rds of the way through.

Red Magic is an interesting fantasy fiction novel, in which the main character shares his being with another entity, and an important protagonist is a vampire.

At the end of the Napoleonic Wars, Goran van Hagen resigns from the army and returns to his home at the mountains in Germany. On Midsummer Eve he is drawn into a celebration at which he drinks a potion that enables Der Held, the hero of the mountain to share his body. From then on, they struggle for control. Goran is puzzled by his experiences, an ancient crone’s description of Held.

“Sometimes the Held can be beautiful. I, myself, have seen him thus. His magic for the crops, for the herds, for the birth of strong children is most powerful, thoughero's h when he is as you first saw him, with the horns, he is what the priests say is the devil. Some women offer themselves to him because of the good fortune his embrace bestows, but others simply desire to bathe in his fire.”

I congratulate talented Ms Waldron on the many twists and turns in Red Magic which fans of fantasy fiction will enjoy.

Magic and Horses

When you have a headstrong young lady and a good looking guy, you're going to have a good story. When you and horses, magic, adventure, tragedy, and a wild imagination, you're going to have a great story.

I know that I'm going to have to research marriage contracts from this historical period, because I find it difficult to believe that when a sister is killed suddenly a week before her contracted marriage to another noble family that her younger sister would be replaced so quickly. In eighteenth century Germany, I am fairly certain that there is a one year mourning period that must be respected, perhaps that is only for parents of wives/husbands. I'm not particularly close to by sibling (its been more then 2 years since the last visit) but if there was a death in my family, I wouldn't be marrying anyone a week later. It takes at least that long just to plan the funeral! Not to mention the obvious grief and sadness involved in a close family member's death.
Miss Caterina von Velsen agrees with my assessment of the situation. She gets locked into her room for six weeks before the marriage and finally does her duty and gets married to Christoph von Hagen who was her older sister's fiance. Okay so they both appear not to excited about getting marriage so quickly after the funeral of the favored Wili (the now dead sister). So they are both pretty miserable during the marriage and the 'celebration' afterwards. They do not consummate the marriage that night.
This is now a good moment to mention that Caterina is sixteen and I'm not sure about Christoph's age but I'd guess to late twenties. This does not shock me at all, they are both now only children and heirs to vast fortunes. There must be a new generation produced immediately to ensure the continuation of power and prestige of the family.
The story was going to get 3 stars until it lost me when she gets kidnapped by the Turkish Pasha and the whole harem experience. Seriously!? I admit that it appears to be well researched and authentic, but too incredible and crazy and out of this world to fit into the tiny German countryside story of the first half of the novel. This is well written, but too weird for me.

I'm sorry to say this book didn't hit the spot.
It was going a bit slow but steadily until . Surprise! *sigh*
A big fat "No", unfortunately.
Another thing, I was surprised to find out, after I finished the book, that the writer is a English native speaker. The editing of the work was done very poorly and to the detriment of the writer.

Fun and fieisty, a bit over the top heroine but plenty to enjoy. Historical romance if not at its best-- definitely a pleasure to read!!
