Carl has a plan. After months spent staring at Miles Kavanagh and admiring him from afar, he’s finally going to do something about his crush on his boss. An office party provides Carl with the perfect opportunity to make his move on the older man. All he needs to do now is get a bit of Dutch courage inside him. Or maybe a lot of Dutch courage…
Falling asleep in his boss’s bed might have been part of Carl’s plan—but waking up naked in that bed the following morning, with no memory of how he come to be that way, really wasn’t on his agenda. Could he really have forgotten one of the most important nights of his life?
Kim is a thirty-three year old bisexual submissive from Wales (UK). First published in 2008, she has since released almost 100 BDSM erotic romance titles ranging from short stories to full length novels. Having worked with a host of fantastic e-publishers, she has just moved into self publishing.
While she has occasionally ventured towards other pairings, Kim's first love is still, and probably always will be, Male/Male stories. But, no matter what the pairing, from paranormal to contemporary, and from the sweet to the intense, everything she writes will always feature three things - Kink, Love and a Happy Ending.
Like the first book in the series (Sealing the Deal), Waking up Naked is an interesting D/s story which is more about the relationship between an experienced Dom and a virginal sub than hardcore BDSM action. This allows for a lighter tone than you find in many BDSM stories, and even some genuine laughter. Both from me, because parts of the story and observations were really funny, and from the characters themselves. I love it when the sex is fun, and there was quite a bit of that here.
Carl is so inexperienced it isn’t even funny. A virgin on all fronts, all he knows is that he wants to be Miles’s sub. Waking up naked in the man’s bed should be a dream come true – except it develops into a absolute nightmare when he cannot remember a single thing of what happened the previous evening or night. Miles believes it is a matter of trust and won’t let him get closer – almost destroying Carl. When he finally manages to explain why the memory (or lack of it) is so important, the one obstacle between them is removed. But let me tell you, it was like watching someone pull teeth!
Miles thinks he knows it all – and is more than disappointed in Carl’s lack of trust. By the time he figures out what the real issue is, because Carl yells the truth at him in his desperation, he is also big enough of a man to admit that not understanding the issue was partly his fault. He had no clue what Carl was thinking. Once he knows what’s wrong he sets about fixing the situation. That’s when the story goes from simmering to really hot!
This is a great exploration of the mind of the inexperienced sub and what happens when he meets an experienced (but still sometimes clueless) Dom. Sparked by the physical attraction between the two characters, the actual relationship goes much deeper.
Recommended for everyone who likes Kim Dare stories, enjoys trying to puzzle out interpersonal mysteries, and likes a sense of humor peeking in – during sex as well as the odd BDSM scene. This story is a very interesting mix of all three of the above.
NOTE: This book was provided by the author for the purpose of a review on QMO Books.
I read the entire Sex Sells series, and wasn't very impressed with any of them, so I'm just going to write one review for all four.
#1 - Sealing the Deal - while I found this one to be probably the most interesting of the four, it still gave me the impression of being misleading. Hudson is supposedly an expert Dom, yet he fails, on several occasions, to accurately read Toby's body language. He also fails to listen to Toby's subtle cues, then becomes angry when he realizes Toby was too overwhelmed by everything that was going on to enter into a binding contract. The very idea that a Dom would even suggest having a potential submissive sign a contract while there was sexual contact occurring merely reinforced the idea that Hudson was not a competent master.
#2 - Waking Up Naked - Again with the "Doms who are bad at their jobs" thing. Carl is new to everything, including sex. He's unsure, off balance, and insecure, yet Miles, again a supposed expert Dom, fails him on so many levels, it's actually quite sad. He makes it a rule that he and Carl won't spend a night together until Carl can trust him, and he can trust that Carl won't run off in the middle of the night. So how does Miles build trust? Well, he gives Carl a scene (only Carl's second BDSM scene), then takes his virginity...then leaves. Yup. No after care whatsoever. Because fuck Carl, I guess.
#3 - Learning the Ropes - Peter is a lot better at this Dom thing than Hudson and Miles, but Floyd is a cowardly asswipe. There's very little communication, and that was just frustrating, and then Floyd's little scheme of taking pictures during a scene without Peter's consent.....ugh. I just can't.
#4 - Turning the Tables - Lee and Jacob. Oh, lord. I liked Lee. He's what I would consider a good Dom. Patient and caring, but stern, and not easily manipulated. Jacob, on the other hand, is a narrow minded, judgmental, self-loathing prick.
In some ways Miles is my favourite type of Dom. He’s easy-going and approachable and clearly has a lot of fun. He’s not stuck-up, not mired in protocols and formalistic shows of respect; I get the feeling he doesn’t need any of that to feel secure in his dominance. Very appealing to me. And he is far from infallible, too.
Overall, the pair of them together feels wonderfully normal, like people just being people. I can picture them being real – and it’s glorious.
Really, really like this story.
2012 Review:
Sweetness!
Okay, this was a little different yet again, but so far the books in this series have amazing tension arcs to them and they differ from one another in terms of personalities, domination style and theme for said tension arc.
Yep, it was good. Absolutely. Miles turned out to be the most easy-going Dom I’ve ever read about, complete with a huge sense of humour, all of which he obviously needs since Carl, quite frankly, is on the defiant, disrespectful side. Not in a rebelling way, but in a way that makes me think of, well, non-submission. Since it appeared to work for Miles, that’s fine, although the result for me was that I liked Miles much more than Carl.
But it was sweet. :3 Good story!
I am a lil wary about the next one, since the Dom there is apparently a hard-ass and pretty harsh. The upcoming sub… I am interested in him. He seems painfully shy so far, and that could make for a very interesting combination.
All I really hope is that we have love again by the end of the book, instead of just a good head-start into that direction. :3 The other volumes up to now have been very good for that. <3
Communication is everything. Truer words were never spoken. 1/2 of this one could have been solved in about 5 minutes with dialogue. Still that doesn't mean I didn't enjoy the squirming. I did like how in control Carl was at work - made more sense to me than the 1st book where the sub got all sorts of wonky the minute he became a submissive. Great sex, fun D/s, nothing to complain about here. Not deep - but addictive anyway!
I adore all of Kim's books but this one is kinda special. I smilled all the way through reading it. Carl was so sweet, very unsure of himself and Miles, the strong, self sure Dom was, in his own way, as unsure as Carl. I loved the perfect ending, just wish it was twice as long, I'd certainly love to read more of these two in another book.
I think I would have liked this book better if it wasn't exactly like the first book in the series...
I read all four of these books right after the other and they were all pretty similar. Even the usage of phrases like "I am halfway in love with you". Huh? This was my least favorite book in the series though. I did like books 2 and 3 better.
Kinky kinky hotness!!! What I love most about this series is the fact that -even if I find it that everyone just trusts each other so easily- their interaction and love for each other is so palpable. I just adore it. This is Carl and Miles' story after the event that happened on book 1 of this series 'Sealing the Deal'
Very good kinky m/m romance about a guy who wakes up naked and hungover in a strange bed with no idea how he got there. And when he eventually does figure out where he is, things don't go so well...
I have finished the series now & am struggling with how to review it. First off, I really enjoyed these books but they are flawed so I had to hold back on the 5th star.
Things I liked... - I really liked the characters. Their personalities, insecurities, interactions etc, etc, etc. - Kim has the ability to write BDSM in a gentle, loving way. Sometimes this is what I'm looking for in a story. - I like that Kim doesn't incorporate humiliation into the BDSM scenes. It is the aspect of BDSM that I least like reading about. - I like the dynamics of the Dom/sub relationships that Kim writes. The Doms are always bigger physically than their subs & this 'fits' the mental images I conjure as I read. - Kim's books can tend to be a bit formulaic at times & although that can be a bad thing, I sometimes like to know what I am going to get out of the reading experience. I like reading with the expectation that there will be a HEA to satisfy my inner sap.
Things I didn't like/had problems with... - The Dom/sub relationships felt rushed. I see collaring as a commitment similar to a marriage & as such I was sceptical that 3 Doms would all rush to collar subs so early in their relationships. - The time-lines were too tight. Carl helped Floyd with intricate bondage when he had only been a sub himself for less than a month according to the storyline. This set my male-cow-excrement metre off. - Kim needs to use more personal pronouns. Some of the descriptions were cluttered & spoiled by the constant use of words like "the dominant"; "the submissive"; etc etc. I was itching to re-write some of these passages (arrogant I know) because the 'tone' of the writing became immature & amateurish with the over-use of certain monikers. - there were a couple of consistency issues between books. For example, in book 2 the glass in the door of Floyd & Clark's office was opaque but was clear in book 3. These things are minor but I find them irritating.
Overall I really enjoy Kim's books. I would have liked to read longer versions of these three stories because I feel that the brevity of the word count short-changed the characters. I will probably re-read them at least once more but after that, I will possibly find the lack of plausibility too difficult to ignore.
I wasn’t sure how to classify this book, BDSM lite perhaps. The focus is more on Carl, the sub, and his inability to remember his first night with his Dom, Miles. Miles is one of the owners of the company, SKIN, that Carl works for. Carl has been secretly lusting after Miles since he started there. As our story begins, Carl wakes up in a stranger’s bed after way too much to drink at an office party. It was kind of funny to see him trying to figure out where he was, who he was with, how he got there. He is sneaking out when he realizes the bed belongs to Miles. ZIP, out the door and into a taxi he goes.
Carl remembers nothing of the evening. Did they have sex? Where? When? Did he embarrass himself? It is making him crazy, and no matter what, he can’t remember. Add in a very, very pissed off Miles when they run into each other and Carl (who is still wearing the leather collar that had been wrapped around his wrist when he woke up) is more confused than ever.
The need for a “clean slate” for Carl to begin his submission is decreed by Miles, who refuses to tell Carl what happens, yet expects Carl to get over the whole thing. I so did not like Miles at times, such as when he would have sex with Carl, yet then make him go home. “Until I’m sure you won’t leave.” That wasn’t working for me. You want the clean slate? Quit sleeping with him until you are sure.
It is resolved well, and Miles did end up likeable for me. The BDSM is very, very light. Though some things seemed a little too neat, it was a quick, enjoyable read.
Miles is teaching Carl a lesson about trust by not telling him what happened the first night they spent together? Really??!! How is that helpful? For me, both MCs seemed to be pouty and passive/agressive, with Miles - the supposed dominant - the worst of the two. Disappointing because I have enjoyed some of this author's books......not this one, though.
A whole book predicated on The Big Misunderstanding was always going to be a stretch for me. Dare made it work it though. And pish! to sensible employment policies: all bosses should screw their employees in D/s scenarios: what could possible go wrong?
BDSM light. I really enjoyed this one. It doesn't have Dare's usual humiliation play (that I HATE), so it worked for me. Wish it had been a bit longer (though, I always feel that way with her novels).
I really enjoyed this series. Kim Dare's books are always nice reads, but I get frustrated with very short pieces. This series has a very pleasant length that allows for character developement and I've enjoyed each and every one of the four books.
Well that was fun. Poor Carl, waking up naked in his boss's bed with no clue what happened. Did he or didn't he? He sure wanted to. Sweet story without being nauseating.
