This volume contains the translations of works from the Soka Gakkai publication "Nichiren Daishonin gosho zenshu" ("The Complete Works of Nichiren Daishonin"). The translations were first published by the Nichiren Shoshu International Center (NSIC) over a period from 1979 to 1995 in a seven-volume series entitled "The Major Writings of Nichiren Daishonin." A total of 172 works make up this series, including the Daishonin's five major works ("On Establishing the Correct Teaching for the Peace of the Land," "The Opening of the Eyes," "The Object of Devotion for Observing the Mind," "The Selection of the Time," and "On Repaying Debts of Gratitude"). Columbia University Press published 85 of those 172 translations, 12 in 1990 in "Selected Writings of Nichiren," and 73 in 1996 in "Letters of Nichiren." Eager to have all the translations under one cover, Soka Gakkai International (SGI) members asked that they be published in one volume. Thus the Soka Gakkai decided to publish the present volume - all 172 works in chronological order. This work is indeed wonderful news, not only for members of the Soka Gakkai International, but for all English-speaking people interested in Buddhism.
Nichiren is medieval Japanese priest and scholar of Buddhism. His studies lead him to the Lotus Sutra. Eventually he comes to realize a practical method of faith practice and study based on the Lotus Sutra, which he propagates. He writes numerous letters of explanation, self-reflection, and encouragement to his followers, to the leaders of the time, and to future generations. They are a source of great inspiration, wisdom, hope, encouragement, and the means to a deeper understanding of ones life, the lives of others, the world, and even the universe. To be read over and over again, throughout ones life...
Great appendices of Japan's maps, Chinese zodiac, phrases and titles. Laden with passages between a prominent Japanese Buddha and his cohorts through thick and thin.
This is a fundamental work for those interested in understanding Nichiren Buddhism. Each letter is chock full of timeless guidance, thoughtful encouragement and explanations. The major writings included also give you a clear sense of the intersections of political and religious thought, and the courage it takes to challenge the status quo. Must have for all who chant Nam-myoho-renge-kyo.
Timeless, Life changing, Beautiful, Inspiring ! Have finished Part 1 and now I am reading Part 2. Will be reading both again and again. This is for daily life. This is for lifetime and beyond :)
