Blood never lies, but people do...

With the King of Altera on his deathbed, all eyes are on his only child, eighteen-year-old
Angeline Robart. Called from her studies to return to her father's side, the Crown Princess is kidnapped en route by Connor, a mysterious rogue who has been waiting a long time for the chance to change his destiny.

Facing the consequences of a freak accident that even Connor could not prevent, Angeline is forced to travel a dangerous path to regain control of her fate and her kingdom. Her impossible choice requires her to rely on Connor, who epitomizes everything generations of her family tried to destroy.

As the last of the Robart bloodline, Angeline discovers that enemies she thought long conquered have been lying in wait for just such an opportunity as her father's death to turn events to their advantage. Worse yet, by uncovering those secrets, Angeline must confront the possibility that no one ever expected her to take the throne in anything but title alone.

As her bond with Connor grows stronger, she realizes they have far more in common than she ever expected, and that could make him just the ally she needs.

Everyone loves a good origin tale. Cege's started when she was eight years old. She snuck out of bed late one night and into the living room to watch TV. Flipping through stations with the volume turned down low, she came across a rerun of a movie called The Exorcist. She was terrified yet mesmerized.

Cege wasn't unfamiliar with the idea of the battle between good and evil. She attended Catholic school in a small town in rural Wisconsin, and at the time knew the 'age appropriate' stories from the Bible. Nothing in those stories prepared her for the visual onslaught of watching the battle between the priests and the demon for the soul of the young Linda Blair. Cege was deeply disturbed by the movie, but nonetheless a seed was planted that night. That seed grew into a rampant fascination with all things supernatural.

Sleepovers turned into B-rated horror film marathons. Her library card was used to bring home piles of books about ghosts and vampires. She still isn't quite sure who she loved first, Stephen King or Freddy Krueger. By the time she was twelve, Cege took a turn at penning her own spooky tales. That love of things that go bump in the night and scare you to death has only grown stronger throughout the years.

The paranormal and supernatural take center stage in all of Cege's stories. Over the years, she has crafted her own origin stories about vampires (the Bloodtruth series), zombies (the Twisted Souls series), and ghosts, angels, and demons (the Shadows series). She's also taken on the folklore around the Fountain of Youth (the Immortal End series beginning with Ageless). There is something for every reader of the paranormal in Cege's books.

Loved this book!
If you like hot vampires, twisted royal family lies, and deep dark secrets then you have the perfect mix all right here bundle into one little book!
The Book is set back in an older time where Kings still ruled in a far away magical land. I love how Princess Angeline, the main female character, is 18 and is about to be abruptly thrown into her new role as Queen of Altera. In a turn of events she meets Connor and then her life is completely turned upside down and sideways too. It is truly a different and refreshing book!
While this book is awesome for trying to figure out what's coming next and trying to decipher the mysteries and twisted truths it does leave you hanging with loose ends. Sequel/Series MAYBE?! BRING IT ON!

There were a few minor things I'd like to see happen if a sequel is in line. One, I need some more action, hot romance (bring on the the steamy scenes) and not that there wasn't enough but more twists and SHUT THE FRONT DOOR moments!(Sorry Love those in books!) Two,I'd like to see more multiple character point of views then third party. Three, I'd like the book to be longer. I just felt I didn't get to spend enough time with anyone in this book. I'd pay more to have a little more time in the next book! I'm not expecting 600 pages but okay I would LOVE it!
Rounding up my babbling...
I would recommend this book because I would honestly read it again and probably will. It's a shorter book so it will have to have a sequel or series to tie up loos ends.I will be adding this author and book to my favorites and pretty much going to be doing the pee dance waiting for the next book. If Cege Smith gives us more this could turn into amazing story and I would buy it!

The price was cheaper on Barnes and Noble than Amazon (rarely happens)so I chose Barnes and Noble. However,(And whether this has anything to do with formatting or not I have no clue?)but it froze and skipped me back a couple of times. Could just be Barnes and Noble???

After I wrote all this I saw on the authors Facebook page the Sequel come out in September! I'm not changing the review though...

I received a copy through LibraryThing's Member Giveaways program in order to give an honest review.

2 ½ Stars: Liked it, some really great elements but not executed to my pleasure enough for 3 stars. Close but not quite there for me, though I do plan on continuing the series.

First thing that drew me to this book was the cover. Just look at it; isn't it beautiful?

Loved:

-The Twists, secrets and reveals
-the history, the beginning of this world. it seems really different than what I've read
- paranormal creature not normally included

Liked:

-as I kept reading I grew to like the characters more and more

Meh:

telling, not showing often. (I liked it to be more descriptive.)
the beginning; hard to get into, didn't connect with the characters very well
insta-love that seems very 'Twilight like' (that is not a compliment...) at first, it does change as the story goes

Didn't Like:

-the repeating prologue (I liked that passage just not the fact that it repeated. Made the story feel circular and pointless.)

-the repeating phrases like describing vamps almost every single time as 'long forgotten enemy' and one man is only described again and again as tiny and/or old. (Other than mentioning his hair upon meeting there’s nothing else (face, body, posture) described of him.)

-minor things :
how convenient the failure of telepathy was a times (never seems to work when they need it but always fails for story progression.),
how apparently these people don't use the bathroom or anything (we get detailed day to day yet there's no breaks. After being knocked out for 12 hrs a human is going to need to, yet they keep rolling like there's no need for hours.),
how it was overlooked when someone was naked (I mean, come on no one at all noticed/commented/acted differently afterwards because of this? Not even the naked person? Not even with the love story going on? Note: Not a sex scene or anything like that.)
kept wondering how “they” have missed finding a giant stone face at the edge of the woods after searching for so many years and all that.

This book and I did not get along at first. I was a struggle to get into it, and connect to the characters. There was a lot of action and things happening but I didn’t really care. I wasn’t wowed or found it interesting. I was fearing this would be a medieval fantasy Twilight. I was worried when Angeline was all but drooling over the man kidnapping and her hostage when she was wondering if that same man murdered all her guards no less. Oh, boy. .

The good news: Angeline is no Bella. Connor is not Edward. Sad fact that books in this genre with male vamps and human woman is now automatically compared to Twilight. (Can we go back to using the Buffy Standard please?)Angeline holds her own while fighting her attraction to Connor and I like what I see from her. Connor does have a bit of the Angel complex going on and I keep hearing Searon in the voice of Spike. (These are good comparisons.)

The thing is I do like these characters. They are solid, dynamic, interesting people and I want to get to know them better but I still didn’t connect personally. I only care because they are the players in the game, the overall story that I want answers too. As I went on reading I got more involved and started caring. By the end, I’m looking forward to the sequel, which I think I’ll enjoy more since I already have a feel for these characters. (Plus, royal court drama!) I really do want to find out what happens to Angeline, her kingdom and what else is going to be revealed. Still don’t really care about the romance aspect since it’s insta-love and I don’t see the attraction/point. I mean, it’s not like there’s a soul bond or anything magical to describe it so jumping straight to love just doesn’t work for me.

I like the prologue for getting to know Angeline (though it does kill the mystery/suspense aspect a bit knowing part of the outcome). Without it I think she wouldn't have come across so well to me at first. That prologue does explain a lot for who she is, but maybe if it was omitted and just repeating in the back it would have the effect of a character arch. Or keep the prologue and at the end don't repeat it all just maybe at snippet from her and the rest from the other point of view. Something different. As it stands, with the repeating it felt, well, circular. We don't have a full idea how Angeline got to where she was at the end and after all that drama to just end where we were....just well, sucked. Not satisfying at all. Of course, the sequel has been out for awhile now so you can just jump into the next book. I do think it was a good cut off point but the repeating is what really killed the ending for me. I can't even re-read books I read 10 years ago because I become bored with them. (Seriously, going back to re-read, my recall is so great I can't stand it.)

There's a bunch of little things that bothered me along the way that stood out particularly since I wasn't in "love goggle" mode with the characters. Most of it is really inconsequential but still it detracted since I was stopping to highlight every 10 or so pages (sometimes more often).

I ultimately enjoyed it, will continue the series and recommend it (especially since I’m sure the minor things that bugged me won’t bug most people). It’s action packed young adult romantic suspenseful medieval fantasy only 200 pages long. The main thing with this book and why it felt lacking is that I wanted more. More descriptions to flesh out the scenes so I could really get into it and just more from it, because I really like the base elements - which cause higher expectations.

Examples:

pg. 76,
They both turned, and a small wizened man stepped out from behind a tree. He had a huge tuft of white hair on his head that matched the long beard extending from his chin, and he looked like he was well over a hundred years old.

That’s it. That’s all the description we get for him. Angeline just continues to call him “old” and “tiny” after this.

pg. 169,
"Even in the dim light of the lantern, after running for miles and no doubt being scared out of her mind, she looked lovely."

HOW? How does she look lovely to you? By this time so much as happened I've even forgotten what she's wearing (lots of costume changes due to the action happening).

I liked the premise of this story, but ended up being disappointed. The editing was lackluster, which might not bother some, but it really detracts, for me anyway, to be jolted out of the story by having to reread a line because there is a word missing. The descriptions also could have been a lot better. A good example is that the only one we get of Caspian is that he is small, old, with white hair, and a white beard. The rest of the responsibility of fleshing out that character is left up to the reader.

This story is nothing like Twilight, but there were things that happened the same that almost required you to keep making the comparison:
That's what I remember off the top of my head, but even if that were all, this book is only 200 pages. By the time you got over the that's-just-like-Twilight and got back into the story it happened again. It was just another thing to jostle you out of the reading that could have been done without.

There is one other plot point that really bugged me towards the end.

The story was not a smooth read and because of that, I wasn't able to get into the story enough to want to read on.

I'M SURPRISED.

I've pretty much locked myself up reading these kinda short, but terrible free kindle books to complete my 2013 GR reading goal, and I was slowly slipping into insanity. Then I came across this one. The ideas intrigued me, but I'll admit I was wary because I had gotten it for free and my expectations were lowered.

But now I'm stepping back and trying to cast away that bias so I can give it the review it deserves. It wasn't the best fantasy book I've read and it has some faults, but I'm honestly almost tempted to give it 5 stars just because it was fun! The twists and turns were exciting, the characters were interesting, and I was compelled enough that I want to buy the next one and find out what happens.

Some people weren't as impressed with this story, but once in a while I get tired of pushing through ongoing descriptiveness and pointless prolonging and this book moved at a pace that was refreshing with just enough of the good stuff, but not too much. At the end, I just wanted to shout, "Thank you!" Thank you for not trying to follow every rule and becoming kinda boring and instead being pretty cool.

Oh yeah, and the whole vampire thing was pretty neat. It was nice to see how conflicted Connor was about it all.

I can see this series doing well if it goes on this way, so...yeah that's really all I have to say. Except: YAYYY, fun story to end the year with. :)

I was actually pleasantly surprised by this one. It definitely needs a better editor/beta to point out some awkward or obvious plot points and smooth it out, but in general, this book had few editing mistakes.

I was actually intrigued enough by the weird blend of paranormal and fantasy world we have here. I liked Connor AND Angelina. The story was pretty interesting.

That said, it didn't draw me in enough that I'm all fired up to keep reading the series. It's entertaining and engaging, but moves slowly and isn't really my cup of tea.

Still if you want to read an epic fantasy type novel with swords and sorcery and gods, but with vampires (and some hint of werewolves, too), then maybe give this series a shot. It's definitely unique.

Enjoyable vampire fantasy...

I enjoyed it enough that I will probably read book two in the series. I feel this story was more fantasy than romance. 3.5 stars

Heiress of Lies is the first book of the Bloodtruth series by Cege Smith. It's the story of Angeline Robart, princess and heir to throne of Altera. She's spent the last few years away from court, studying and preparing to be a queen. But visitors from home bring the worst possible news: her father is dying, and Angeline must ascend the throne sooner than she imagined. Angeline rushes to get home before it's too late to say goodbye, but someone has other plans for her.

An old enemy has been laying in wait--a terrible race of vampires that everyone believed had been vanquished by the first Robart king. And now they hold Angeline captive, threatening her life and the future of all Altera.

Angeline must find a way to free herself and return home, yet to do so she may have to endear herself to vampire that kidnapped her in the first place. Connor is the enemy, but Angeline has a hard time reconciling that fact with her inexplicable feelings for him. And as her own family's dark secrets start coming to light, he may be the only person she can trust.

The story starts off strong by introducing Angeline and giving us a good look into her character. As a protagonist, Angeline is exceptional. She's immediately accessible as a woman who is strong and sensible yet riddled with misgivings. She's the kind of leading lady you can happily root for, telling yourself, "yeah, that's totally what I would have done had it been me."

Much of the praise for this character's likability is due to the author's skill with words. Cege Smith writes with clarity, subtlety, and sophistication. She's created a convincing portrayal of a young woman caught between intention and impulse. Angeline wants to be clever, controlled, and responsible. But she's also sheltered, vulnerable, and emotional. This tenuous balance lends realism and respectability to her character.

Plus she's smart, and I always like that.

In contrast, I didn't feel much for Connor. He lacks Angeline's complexity, and there's a general sense of weakness just under his surface. I'd say he's as well-written as Angeline is, but he isn't as attractive. He's saved by the fact that, as a duo, they're quite interesting. I really enjoyed the way Angeline's feelings for Connor developed. From early on she's attracted to him, but she tempers that with caution and practicality. Meanwhile he has to contend with just how deep his feelings really go.

As for plot, the first half of the book is a little slow. Then things pick up greatly with a healthy dose of intrigue and urgency. And more intrigue. Sadly, the book leaves off just as things really get interesting. Clever Cege. I definitely need to know what happens next and plan on buying the sequel, The Queen's Betrayal. And then there's the third book, Trials of Truth, which isn't out yet.

I was very impressed by this first book of what I believe is a unique work by Cege Smith. I got so much more than I expected from this free Kindle read. I am referring to this as a novella because I read it in a few hours but it was not a short story by any means. I am not sure how many pages it would be in hardcover format. It felt like maybe 200 pages to me but I could be wrong. If I find out for certain, I will make a correction. The story was very rich so I don't want potential readers to avoid it for the novella label.

This story had a couple of master level accomplishments that are not commonly well done in a novella. First, Ms. Smith never lost control of the storyline or the characters. Sometimes authors aren't able to make a story flow seamlessly when they are trying to keep it short. Not the case here. Second, Ms. Smith did not box the characters into templates so they could fit into a shorter format. Everyone surprised me. These two factors were very critical to the validity of the story since the main character, Angeline, was constantly being winded by lie after lie. To make this work, the reader had to be as caught off guard as Angeline. Therefore it was important that the characters had enough range to both love and betray her. It was so complex. Loved it.

Angeline is the Princess and only heir to a kingdom always ruled by men. Her bloodline goes back to the man that won a bloody war against the vampires 300 years prior. Vampires were destroyed along with their threat. Maybe or maybe not. Along comes Malin. He is a vampire that kidnaps Angeline to take her to his Master. Along the way, things go to hell several times in several ways. Malin starts out with the minimum requirements of a hero. As he works his way toward doing what is right, he makes mistake after mistake. Again, amazing what Ms. Smith did with the novella format. There is romance but not fully formed only the discovery of forbidden feelings. I would say it's YA but there is quite a bit of violence so not so sure. That's about all I can say without giving away spoilers. Trust me, you don't want those.

I enjoyed this one so much that I immediately dished out $3.99 for book two. Of course there is a cliffhanger but I felt it was 'neat' to a degree. I didn't get too annoyed because the second book is out and available. I did take off one star for the worldbuilding. I felt that the corners were cut to close on this aspect. Sometimes good fantasy requires detailed descriptions of trees and wind direction. It was there but it wasn't enough to see things clearly. Also, the Angeline is a princess with a dying father. She has never really seen the kingdom fully so I felt her impressions should have been described in more detail. There were typos but they were few and far between. I highly recommend this book to lovers of dark fantasy with interesting characters and expert use of the element of surprise.

Although Heiress of Lies is a great take on a "vampire" story. I must be honest and say that I've become a little bored with all the vampire novels out there. So I will take a minute and say BRAVO on Heiress of Lies.
Heiress of Lies is a novel about Angeline Robart, princess of Althea. She was betrothed at a young age to Malin. Who happens to be her father's chief adviser.
Heiress of Lies is primarily based on Angeline and Connor's POV. Which gives readers the opportunity to see how events unfold through Connor the vampire's eyes.
Angeline for the past 2 years has been living at the convent, St. Abeth, when she gets word that her father is dying and wishes to see his beautiful daughter. As Angeline is on her way home from the convent her men are attacked and she is taken captive by Connor. During her time with Connar, Angeline recalls some memories and eventually she is introduced to the darker side of her Robart family line.

At first Angeline keeps trying to think of a way to escape but Connor always seems to be one step ahead of her. Every time Angeline has strong thoughts, Connor seems to know exactly what she is thinking/feeling. Angeline is very unsure of Connor ... she was told that "his kind" was extinct, as well as vicious monsters. But Angeline is torn by what she was brought up learning about these monsters and how Connor actually makes her feel. To her surprise, Connor is intelligent, thoughtful, and respectful of her and her needs. Connor is equally shocked and surprised by not only Angeline's beauty, but by the fact that she doesn't see him as a "monster".

Later on in the book Cege Smith gives us a glimpse of Connor's past life, when he was still human and how he became a vampire.

With this information, you find yourself actually feeling for Connor (if you hadn't yet) as well as gaining deeper insight into why Connor kidnapped Angeline. It also becomes easier to understand Connor. Not only the man, but the vampire that he has become.

This book has tons of suspense and ups and downs. I would definitely recommend you read it if you're a fan of Vampires and or Historical Fiction!!

I won a copy of this book in Elle Casey's 2013 January Anniversary Indie Book Giveaway.

First things first: the prologue. I get what the author was trying to do here, of course: give us a taste of what's to come later, so that we know what climax we are building towards. But in the case of this book, the prologue gave away far too much. Therefore the book did not have enough tension or surprises as it went on. Adding insult to injury, the prologue is repeated as Chapter 35, Word for word as far as I could tell!!! With only one short final chapter after that - which resolves nothing, really, except perhaps readers' interest in Book 2. This just feels like lazy writing (which is a complaint I had about a lot of this book, actually, especially where the romance is concerned).

This had a pretty fresh take on vampires, which I appreciated, but that being said I didn't think that the take was developed enough as vampirism. That is, the vampire coven seems simply like a political faction against the Robarts' reign over the Kingdom of Altera, as opposed to a dangerous supernatural enemy. Their threat never quite feels visceral, only political, which is an odd thing when you're talking about blood-drinking immortals.

I generally liked the main character, Angeline. She is compelling, smart beyond her 18 years, and massively pissed off when she finds out that she's been lied to so deeply her whole life - truly an heiress of lies! However, I take issue with the following: rather than calling out the raging sexism of her world, she - and thus the book itself - simply repeat various iterations of "She cursed the day she wasn't born male", thus upholding male superiority without real question. One would think that as part of Angeline's 're-education' (also via males) in this story, she would call out how messed up that is rather than going along with everything. She remains a pawn being manipulated by men, and the book doesn't give any indication that it's aware of social commentary. The book plays it straight, and the excerpt from Book 2 didn't give me a sense that the rest of Angeline's tale will be all that different.

Heiress of Lies is the first book in the series about a Princess who gets kidnapped on her way home to see her father who is on his deathbed. Being kidnapped by a vampire is the least of her worries when something bad happens to her that threatens not only her ascension to the throne but everything she thought she knew.

The story is written in third person, following Angeline and Connor. Angeline is the Princess of Altera and the only heir in line for the throne. She was sent to a convent to continue her studies before she would be brought back to take the throne. Because she is not a male heir, she must be married to become queen. Therefore, she is betrothed to the king’s advisor, Malin – a highly respected match amongst the people. When her father becomes deathly ill, she travels back to the kingdom from the convent. Along the way, her caravan is attacked. Angeline is kidnapped by Connor, a vampire – albeit a disgruntled one. Connor never wished to be vampire. He has spent the vast amount of his new existence seeking a cure for it. When the Master of the vampire declares that he will grant any desire to the vampire who brings back Angeline alive, he jumps at chance. But, he’s not the only one interested in Angeline.

Besides following the above storyline, the plot also centers on lies and betrayals. There are secrets from the past that are affecting the characters now. Angeline is special, and she becomes more special as this journey continues. The story leaves off for the next book to pick up. It was fairly short (for my usual length in books) and therefore a quick read. I liked the different twists in the book – deceptions, lies, etc. I would have liked to see a little more reaction of the people/characters during the last two chapters. Obviously there are other books, but a few more paragraphs would have been nice. For example, two characters got maybe a line or two about what happened after a certain event. I think this should have been expanded upon.

Overall I enjoyed the book. If you like paranormal stories (with vampires/fantasy kingdoms), then you might want to try this book.

Paranormal, Romance, Young Adult

Eighteen-year-old Angeline Robart’s father the King of Altera is on his deathbed which has turned the eyes of the kingdom on her. While studying she is called home to be at her father’s side but on the way she is kidnapped by Connor. He is a mysterious rogue who has waited a very long to time to change his destiny.

Now Angeline is facing the consequences of a freak accident that Connor was unable to stop. She is being forced to travel a dangerous path to regain control of both her future and her kingdom. The choice which seems impossible forces her to rely on Connor who is everything that her family has done everything possible to destroy.

Angeline is the last of the Robart bloodline, and she has discovered enemies that she has always believed had been conquered but she now finds out they have only been lying in wait for the time when her father is gone. By uncovering the secrets Angeline discovers even worse is that no one expected her to take the throne in anything but title alone.

Angeline now has a bond with Connor that is growing stronger all the time. She also realizes that they have a lot more in common than she ever thought possible. It also could very well make him an ally that she needs now more than ever.

This is a young adult story that is very interesting. The world building comes alive with every word as it paints a picture of a different time and place. With every secret that is uncovered the story gets more intense and the plot even more compelling. This story has mystery, action and romance and while it does end with a cliff hanger it is sure to leave the reader desperately wanting to read the next book in the trilogy. If the other two books continue to be a engrossing as the first this will prove to be a very interesting trilogy that hopefully has an ending that is good as the start of the series.

A Write to Review

Note: I received this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

As the King of Altera approaches his final days, the attention of the kingdom turns to his sole heir, eighteen-year-old Angeline Robart. Summoned from her studies to stand by her father's side during his last moments, the Crown Princess's journey takes a shocking turn when she is abducted en route by Connor, a mysterious rogue who harbors his own long-held ambitions for change.

Haunted by a tragic accident that defied even Connor's control, Angeline must now navigate treacherous terrain to reclaim her destiny and her kingdom. Her path to salvation forces her into an uneasy alliance with Connor, a man who represents everything her family has fought against for generations.

As the final descendant of the Robart bloodline, Angeline unravels a web of secrets that exposes enemies she thought were vanquished, lurking in the shadows, ready to seize the opportunity presented by her father's imminent demise. Moreover, the revelations hint that perhaps she was never meant to ascend to the throne with more than just a ceremonial title.

The premise of the story is very inspirational and unique and I love the development of the world that Smith created. The development of how vampires and humans came into existence is very exceptional too. Angeline is a very strong character with a forceful personality making her easily able to accept change and lead herself towards a decision for survival. Connor is an enticing character who is troubled and flawed by his past but his maturity and want of redemption are endearing.

Overall I loved the progression of the story and the pace. I am excited to read the sequel.

Angeline Robard is the heir to the king of Altera who is dying. There has never been a Queen who ruled, but she is his only heir. Her father betrothed her to the son of his Chief Advisor. Baford's have always been Chief Advisors just as Robard's have always ruled. On her way home to be at her father's bedside she is kidnapped by a vampire who only tells her that she must meet with his Master. Along the way she is bitten by a very poisonous spider, her only chance is for him to either drain her and turn her or just to try to take enough blood to save her from the poison. He chooses to just try to take the poison. The result is she is turned into a Wraith. Connor (her captor) knows of only one person who can help her through the change. When they arrive the teacher freely tells them that he has never successfully seen a Wraith turned and live to tell about it. But he has volumes of handwritten books on his "experiments". He believes that because her royal blood is so strong she may be the exception and actually live as a Wraith. She never knew this other world existed - vampires, wraiths, weres. She wonders what else has been kept from her. She learns to trust Connor and even to love him. He claims himself to be her protector on their journey and has proven himself several times. She learns that her intended is not human. In 3 days they are to be married. She may then be called Queen, but her intended plans to run the country. Can she work with Connor and some how save herself, her country, and not live out the travesty that is planned for her.
This could be seen as a complete novel at this point, just that many things are still left unresolved. The second book is entitled "Queen's Betrayal" and at this time I have no strong desire to read it and learn more about this series.

Heiress of Lies was not a bad story, although - do we really need yet another vampire book? I have to admit that if it had explicitly stated vampires in the synopsis, I would not have read it because I am so over vampires. They're old news. But, you know, this was free so it's not as though I actually lost anything in reading it.

I hate being negative in reviews for freebies because I think it's generous of an author to give away their work, even if they are doing so to try and generate some attention and perhaps increased sales of their other books. Even the best book needs marketing. Unfortunately though, I can't recommend this one, free or not, because I found the writing terribly clunky. A classic sentence is: "It looked like a place that resembled a cave, but it wasn't." I'm sorry, but that is just painful. Ditto "Plus, there is the matter of uncovering the most important thing that makes such a thing possible." Sentences were written missing words that, yeah, you'd skip in speech but it is just not correct to skip in writing. For that matter, there were sentences missing words that even the most lenient editor should have picked up on. For example: "If Angeline didn't do something, it might be possible that her kingdom would wake up one day at war with an enemy that most of people had forgotten ever existed." "Most of people"? Really?

I can forgive an unoriginal story but I can't forgive iffy writing and to be honest, I don't even want to try.

HEA:

Going into this I did not know that it had vampires. I am not one of the people who was all “I am sick of vampires”. My thought was as long as it's a good book then I don't care if there are vampires in it. But this book ended that for me. I don't know why but the second the book brought in the vampire trope my first thought was “No not vampires!”. I have read several books that were so amazing and they happen to have vampires. This book is not that. So if you are sick of vampires steer clear.

And if you are sick of insta love without any background or real foundation to support it then steer clear. Angeline and Conner’s romance didn't do anything for the story. Maybe in the later books it will get better.

As for the plot, I feel like it was all over the place. We got a lot and not enough of information in this book. There were too many things that the characters had to take time to do just to get a little bit of information. It would have been better to get the information in a more simple way and use the extra time to really develop the characters and the world of the book.

It may be that this is very much a book of setting up for the future books. I don't feel like the author really grabbed me in this one. As a result I won't be reading the other books anytime soon. Maybe farther in the future but not now.

When I finished that book, my first thought was "What the heck just happened?"

Ok, not my most original thought about the book, but seriously, WHAT THE HECK JUST HAPPENED?

There isn't really a climax to this book. I felt like I was climbing a cliff with all this mystery, action, and adventure to get to the top of the cliff so I could jump off the other side (you know experience that crazy rush of emotions as things fall apart) only to realize that the other side was not a cliff, but instead a nice couple of steps down to a very pretty ridge where a car was waiting to drive me back to the bottom. There was no ending to the story, no wrap up. You basically start the story where you end the story and the book is about how you got there. However, it does it without really answering any questions or building the story to where it may potentially go or what the point of all this is.

That said, I totally can't wait for the next one so I can see what happens next. Conner is interesting and I enjoyed his struggle. Angeline is a great heroine who you can totally relate to and you understand her struggle. Mailin, I'm completely unsure of and then there is the Clan and the Coven. Such intrigue.

Angeline is to be the queen when her seriously ill father dies. On her way home from the convent she is kidnapped by Connor, a vampire. He is to take her to his Master. Along the way trouble befalls them. Angeline must learn to deal with those troubles so she can return him. I loved Connor. He does not want to be a vampire and is searching for a cure but he will do as his Master wants and bring Angeline to him. Angeline is not the most reticent of victims. Since she has been trained to be queen, she will do what she must to escape and survive to make her way home. I liked her. She is spunky and kick ass. She is not going to let anyone get ahead of her. However, she discovers that much of what she knows is lies. She has to figure out what is true, what is lie. Who she can trust and who cannot be trusted. I do not like that she has to be married to be queen. I also do not like the man, Malin, who has been chosen for her. I have my suspicions what he has done and what he will do. I need the second part of this series to know if I am right. There is a lot of action and adventure in this story and it sets up the series very well.

3.5 STARS

Although the plot description initially grabbed my attention, I was a little wary about the cheesy book cover (and title...) And even though I normally stay FAR away from vampire/supernatural stories, I finally decided to give this a go and I was glad I did. The fairytale overtones in this story stop it from being dark or taking itself too seriously. None of the villains are remotely scary; that is to say, we (the readers) don't at any point ever feel like the main character is in danger.

The plot moves along fairly quickly, with mostly action scenes. The only reason this doesn't get 5 stars is due to some odd writing choices the author makes. For example, there is an extended prologue in the beginning. One of the final chapters of this story is THE EXACT SAME PROLOGUE. no seriously, it's written word for word. And then the story ends several pages after that. So really, even though we get a bunch of background story in the middle, we end up right back where we started- which is not a satisfying conclusion, even for a 'part 1' book.

However, it is quite well written with decent twists and a likeable main character.

I was so pleasantly surprised by this book. There is a lot of hit and miss when it comes to free kindle books, but I am so glad I found and read this book. I am definitely moving on to book 2 ASAP.

The world building is really unique. I love that . The whole concept of the unique kingdom, everything Angeline goes through with her struggle of being the first female Robart on the throne, the story of wraiths (another awesome concept) and learning everything you thought was true was just a fabrication.

The only inconsistency that got to me was . Definitely worth the read and last I checked, this first book in the series was still free on Amazon.

As with the main character of the book, Angeline, the reader is left confused and unknowing, even though the book is told from 3rd person and not particularly attached to any characters. I did enjoy the premise of the book, and the characters are well written - realistic and likable. Plot-wise there aren't many characters, so its pretty easy to keep things straight; the difficult part is remembering all the history/lore that makes up the country (world? it seems like there's only one country).

The first chapter and most of the last chapter are exactly the same, which was kind of nice because sometimes when books change time/tenses like that it's difficult to remember where the book started. Interested in reading the next book. I oscillated between liking and not liking this book. I liked the basic premise, I just didn't think there was enough to this story. Still interested in seeing if the author has anything to follow it up though.

WOW! I love when a free nook book blows you away. This author did just that!

This book was an incredible read. I loved every single one of the characters, even the bad guys. I loved the world she created, so magical and mysterious. I loved the way it was written. Amazing!

Angeline is a great character. She is strong willed and confident, but also is growing into the woman she needs to be. She doesn't fawn over love or romance, it is the last thing on her mind. faun is building herself up to be the queen that Altera needs.

This is the first time in a LONG time that I have read the first book in a series and immediately started the second! I am very happy that I found this series.

And on a side note....
You know how reading these fantasy type books people will be, "I want to be a vampire! I want to be a werewolf! I want to be a witch!" Well let me tell you something, after reading this book,

This was a really great book!

At first I really didn't like Angeline, cause she was snooty and just too prim but I understand that she was brought up that way as Queen an everything. Very quickly I changed my mind! She cares a great deal for her kingdom and wants to be the best Queen that she can! She didn't let her situation get to her but for a couple times!

Connor is great! At first he's this smart ass, hot Vampire who you don't know if you want to punch in the face or tell him you're all his. Even while being her kidnapper he was caring and thoughtful!

It was cool to see a different approach to Wraiths- I've always seen wraiths written and said to be ghosts, and I can see that can kind of play her but in a physical/alive sense.

This story was very easy to read and follow along to. I truly enjoyed the story, characters, and even their little history lessons.
Can't wait to read book 2!

I highly recommend this book!

This was a great story, I enjoyed each character (good and bad and maybe a bit of both). I won't go into describing the story line as that has been done already, but I will say I look forward to reading the next book in the series to see what happens. This is a light fun read, I believe it is directed more toward the YA crowd but it is well worth the time to read. Having said that there are a few grammar errors and if you get the kindle edition there are some formatting issues but nothing that was too distracting. I would have loved to have seen more romance and tender moments between Angeline and Connor, but I think that may stem from the more adult books I read. All in all I would recommend this as a fun light read. Thanks for the intro into Angeline's world Cege, can't wait to see what happens next, because that ending really left me hanging!!!

I have to admit I like reading a good vampire story or two and was pleased when I was offered a complimentary copy to review! Heiress of Lies has a little more to it than the average vampire story. The plot unfolds quickly as Princess Angeline finds herself kidnapped by someone or rather something that she didn't know existed... a vampire, just prior to her becoming Queen. Angeline finds herself caught in the middle of many lies that have been spun by her own people, leaving her facing the truth that vampires exist. And once this wall of lies falls who is she going to side with?

Oh, and what would a good story do without adding in a few ghosts, and wraiths? This book definitely ends leaving you waiting for the next one!

Quite a good example of a para/supernatural vampire story. The main character is heir to the throne of her kingdom, which is all fine and dandy except for one small minor secret. That secret has changed the way she thinks and feels about everything and everyone around her. The author takes us back in time and lets the reader revisit the path which changes the fate of the crown princess. I liked the way the writer approached that part of the concept. The ideas within the book seem to take the normal route that this genre tends to go with, but hidden in the folds are some very good alternative ideas. It will be interesting to see if the author will manage to keep that extra bit of creativity flowing and create an even better sequel. I received a free copy of this book for my review.

This story was everything I hoped it would be. I loved the twisted truths and trying to figure out what would come next. I also loved the history of the country, Altera; and finding out that one version of the history was not necessarily the correct one.

I even loved the relationship that develops throughout the book, even though I was wary at first

The only problem I had with the book, and it was a slight one, was the prologue. I could have done without it seeing as how it's completely repeated, word for word at the end of the book.

I enjoyed this book immensely and will absolutely be purchasing the sequel!
