When large groups of supernatural creatures that were targeting him start getting massacred without warning, Jerry thinks it's possible that he may have an ally out there protecting him.
Unbelievably powerful, undeniably intelligent and indescribably beautiful, Aria isn't just an ally, she's every teenage guys greatest fantasy. This is quickly becoming one of my favorite series I love it and the second book all the same Urban Fantasy happy buttons that the first one did. I loved the first book so much the author gave me a copy of the second book (bless his little heart, don't you wish all your fave authors were like that!). After getting a copy from the author I rubbed my hand together with glee, grabbed my tablet and off I went to read, pity those that interrupted me they were met with snarls and profanity...slinks off to apologize.
The story picks up shortly after where the first book left off with Jerry and his crew taking on all supernatural baddies, and it seems they are getting a little help from the new character Aria. Aria, well she is just plain nuts! She is self centered, abrasive, dangerous, super hot and oh did I mention she is also the daughter of Lucifer. She is also the most fun bad guy/girl I have read in ages and like the rest she has her heart set on Jerry's blood.
Blood Heavy: Ascension had action from cover to cover and I devoured it in a single sitting. It answers some questions from the first book, like who saved Jerry's life and who wiped out the Black Forest. It was great to watch Jerry and the crew grow from friends and acquaintances with the same agenda develop into a family unit, although when one of the main characters is killed I did kinda want to punch the author in the face...sorry.
I didn't think the second book could possibly be as good as the first, it was every bit as good if not better and I can't wait for the third book to come out.

After loving the authors first book Blood Heavy by S.L.J. Shortt, I recieved a e-book copy of the second book in the series Blood Heavy: Ascension. I Loved the book just as much as the first and how the clan of characters I loved from the first book were there (Cass, Sophie, Claire etc) but there were new characters that had just as good back stories and personalities.. The relationships and bonds between all of them are very well done, you have Shophinia/Jerry (mother/son) Jerry/Rach (brother/sister) and of corse Goose/Jerry Bestfriends turned family. I did tear up a few times during the book as the author made really good choices about how to write the "touching" interactions between the pairs.
I am a big fan of this series and loved everything about it, it really made me think of all the different spiecies in the book especially demons and angels. I am very happy that we found out who saved Jerry in the first book. That was one thing that I had not been expecting. You also get to meet who was responsible for taking out the majority of Black Forest in the previous book.
The villian in this book, Aria, was a great character! She was smart, has stlye, and does whatever it takes to get what she wants and in my opinion was very original,especially her motive. I loved the fact that it was a female as you get a lot of male villians.
It was a very fast pace book and I didn't want to put it down. And when it was over I was already thinking about what may come next for Jerry and his family. I have also recommended thid to any of my friends who I know read. Very well done!

I got an ARC of this novel simply because Shortt wanted me to proof read it.
It's been said that true love is one soul inhabiting two bodies. Masses of romance novels are based on the concept of soul mates but there are those rare few where the soul mates aren't lovers but in fact enemies. I'm not talking about Romeo and Juliet; I'm talking about Sherlock and Moriarty, Clarice and Hannibal, Batman and The Joker.
A hero and a villain whose lives quite literally revolve around each other.
That is exactly what we get in Blood Heavy: Ascension.
Aria only made a short cameo at the end of the first novel (when she detonated a vampire with her mind) but she is the main focus of this second instalment and she has climbed to the top of my greatest villains list. She has a truly dark sense of humour that is reminiscent of Heath Ledger's Joker from The Dark Knight that is found only in a person that is fully aware of their own madness. Aria is a truly refreshing villainess for many reasons but most notably because:
1. She has style.
2. She has a wicked sense of humour.
3. She does everything for herself (no henchmen to be seen anywhere)
4. She's different and because her motives are extremely simple yet highly original. I don't think I've ever seen a bad guy or in this case 'girl' do what they did for the reasons in this book.
Sorry, not going to spoil it for you.
Basically, this book is like Silence of the Lambs. You're cheering for the hero but it's the villain that leaves a lasting impression on you. The only real weakness is that she doesn't appear for about the first seventy-five pages and you don't really get to see Aria in all her glory until the very end of the book.
NOT ENOUGH BAD GIRL!
But...thankfully. The other characters and plot more than fill the void. Jerry is back and more sarcastic than ever and this book has so many pop culture references that I actually had Google on standby just to fully understand them all. All the characters have little moments where they shine through and although Jerry in the main character, Goose and Joe are the ones that tug your heart strings in this. Unless of course they are compared to the mother/son relationship that has developed between Jerry and Sophinia which you might need the Kleenex on hand for.
This instalment also gives us what the last one lacked: ROMANCE! Although it's not a focal point, it is very present and is not just endearing but hilarious at times. I'm just wondering when we get to see the other characters find their other halves. By the way, this novel should come with a warning label. Some of the scenes in this had me laughing so hard that I almost peed a little. Once again, the dialogue and character actions are inspired by Joss Whendon are easily some of the best I've ever read. The 'faecist' scene was brilliant.
As for the plot...Hmm...so far it's all been a survival game for Jerry. He got dropped into the middle of a shark tank and the story has been about him trying to swim out. This one isn't much different except that you get the foreboding sense that this is all leading to something much much bigger. I'm happy to report that the whole 'Destiny' thing is handled very well in this novel with no prophecies or hints of what the future holds but instead with an underlying promise that it does mean something.
Some people may have already guessed some of the 'twists' in this novel but I can guarantee, nobody will see the ending coming. Aria's big reveal at the end left me speechless. Along with a few elements that are very uncommon in YA fiction today such as an alcholic six-hundred year old Irish mage going the crew, an encounter with a Wyvern, a hobo priest and Jerry getting a bomb strapped to his chest to name but a few.
The only other complaint I have about this novel is the sheer breakneck speed that it moves at. Once the action starts (which happens on about page four) you literally don't have a chance to breath. There's plenty of character development but I would have liked to see it flushed out a bit more. As soon as a character reaches a turning point, they are forces into a life or death situation before they can fully come to grips with it which sucks for them. Still, the action is too good not to love. In fact, the final fight is so intense that it makes the Hunger Games look like a playground scrap because none of the fighters are reluctant in this. They're all out for blood which pretty much sums up the title of the book.
All in all: Blood Heavy: Ascension is the type of thing I want to see coming soon in IMAX 3D.

Blood Heavy: Ascension was given to me for free in return for a review. Seeing as I had not read the first book when I received it, I jumped on the chance to buy Blood Heavy on Kindle for 99 cents, and so I will probably end up referring to both.
Daniel Jericho (Jerry) is the usual teenage boy, able to turn into a murderer at the threat of his car (okay maybe not so usual). But his car turns out to be the least of his worries when he is hunted for his blood, and turns into one of the best supernatural creature killers with his best friend Goose. Jerry is getting used to the weirdness of his new life when suddenly it seems there is an angel watching over him, killing his enemies and making life easier for him. Jerry has a lot to worry about, his new "angel" which he refuses to believe is good, the question of his mother, and the sexual tension between him and his very out of bounds vampire friend.
I must admit I wasn't enthralled by the blurb, but I soon as I delved into Blood Heavy I was captivated. Blood Heavy and Blood Heavy: Ascension play with new ideas on supernatural creatures and bring even more individuality to vampires themselves. The way the characters were given such strong personalities showed amazing writing technique and the way Jerry's somewhat humorous teenage angst was portrayed was very effective. I enjoyed discovering these new perspectives and the twists and turns kept me guessing page after page. If I were to categorise these books I would have a difficult time, seeing as they are obviously fantasy, yet also very action-packed and many times throughout reading these novels I found myself laughing out loud (much to my friend's curiosity, seeing as the books I normally read don't incorporate humour on such levels).
I feel S.L.J. Shortt has conquered female characters in these two books, showing amazing understanding of the gender and how we function, and the many different personalities that a woman can swap between. The two sisters, Claire an Cassandra have such different personalities(Claire - kind and sisterly, and Cass - conceited and quick witted) but Shortt is able to show specific personality traits that link them together. The character of Sophinia, gorgeous and motherly, is portrayed in a way that makes you feel the raw emotion she experiences and how her physical superiority doesn't change the way she cares about each one of the people in their odd little family. Aria, Oh Aria, so many secrets, I must admit I did not see anything about her coming. Shortt depicted Aria perfectly, and I cannot decide whether I love her or hate her, but she sure is one hell of a bombshell.
The first two novels of the series (or trilogy, I am not sure how many novels are going to be written along this story line), have been amazing and incredibly surprising. I recommend these books to EVERYONE! (okay maybe just the usual young adult audience). This is not a vampire fiction for girls, there is no sappy romance, this is an action book that has vampires in it, and I really believe that guys should give it a go. Basically all you need to know is that I give it five stars, so go the library, bookstore, amazon shop, or any other means of getting books that you have and buy this book!

This is the second installment in the Blood Heavy Series. I enjoyed it just as much as the first book. It’s not a fluke, SLJ Shortt is a great writer. He’s very talented with written humor which I imagine cannot be easy to convey. That’s the main reason I like the series; they’re clever and funny. How often can a book make you laugh out loud????
Jerry and Goose are back and packing attitude. You name it, they want to kick its ass. They’ve been hunting…..everything – wraiths, strigoi, poltergeists, werewolves. They are exterminators, until they meet Aria. She’s a bad ass demon with a few tricks up her sleeve.
Shortt injects a soundtrack into the story. Music sets the stage for violence and humor, a great combination! There are a lot of funny references to pop culture.
We learn that all supernatural beings originated from demons. Claire and Joe “hook up” and Jerry walks in….awkward. Jerry develops new powers; he can at times predict an enemy’s next move. That comes in handy. The FBI tries to get involved. Jerry and Goose are now on their radar; that can’t be good.
The epic battle with Aria was bad-ass. She’s right about one thing, Jerry will never give up. He will protect his loved ones no matter what he has to sacrifice. Near the end we learn they have been betrayed by one of their own. That was hard to swallow. Losing one of their own was much more difficult because I’ve grown attached to Jerry’s group.
I was hoping to get closer to the mystery of Jerry’s mother, but no such luck. I was wrong about what she might be. A few clues were thrown out but not enough to know for sure. I am dying to know who/what she is and how Jerry fits in. The suspense is killing me!
I got bored with the gun talk; it’s just not my thing. Men will love this book if only to enjoy the boys (Goose and Jerry) and their toys.
Again, this is a fun interesting read. Make sure to give the series a try.

Blood Heavy: Ascension continues the story from Blood Heavy. Shortt continues the adventure with his over the top paranormals, making it an entertaining read.

Characters:
The characters you came to love from the first book are still there; the main characters of Jerry and Goose are exaggerated even more in this story (which makes it fun).
Joe still plays a role as well as Claire, Cassandra, and the rest of the vamps from the first book.
There is a high body count in this story, including the killing off of some characters that I thought were key. Additionally, you are are introduced to a new bad ass character with intentions on Jerry.
Story:
The pace of the story is rapid, complete with the humor and sarcasm you will have come to expect after the first book. Plus, You finally find out who the red headed woman at the end of the first book is.
Jerry and Goose have become hard core paranormal hunters, the problem is that they have come to the attention of the FBI. Jerry's "protector" is still there and killing potential enemies and remains a major concern for Sophinia and the rest of the vamps trying to keep Jerry alive.
We still don't have a clear idea of why his blood is so important, but Shortt started giving us a glimpse of the reason.
If you like paranormal it is worth a read.

Daniel Jericho’s, Jerry, life has been turned upside down. He is thrown into a world of the supernatural and is taking a crash course in how to survive. He is fighting with reformed vampires, to destroy the evil creatures of the world. He’s seen great loss and will do anything to protect his new found family.
A beautiful woman/creature named Aria takes a strong interest in Jerry, but no one is sure what kind of creature Aria might be. He must rely on his friends, uncle and wits to survive this newest threat.
I did not read the first book in the series but was able to follow the story line easily. It was fast paced, action packed and a very interesting take on the supernatural/spiritual worlds. Blood Heavy: Ascension is a great young adult book with fun characters and a very fascinating twist to story line that kept me riveted to the end. I will definitely be back reading book one in this series and continue on with book 3.

I will definitely be back reading book one in this series and continue on with book 3.

I thoroughly enjoyed the first novel in this series and thought that Shortt would have a hard time topping it, but I would go as far as to say that this second installment is even better!
We once again meet our favourite characters, Jerry, Goose and co as they are trying to take out all of the evil, human-hunting creatures who are posing a threat, when along comes a demon posing as an Angel. Aria, the Demon, is highly dangerous and is willing to kill anything to get what she wants and that includes innocent families. Jerry is on a mission to stop her when he runs into a priest, Wick, who has been hunting Aria for years and together they come up with a plan to stop her for good.
Along the way there is some really good storylines developing the relationships of the characters, and we lose a well loved character (and I am not ashamed to say that I may have shed a tear).
Overall the novel was very well written and keeping you in suspense with its many twists and turns. I am thoroughly looking forward to reading the next installment.

Blood Heavy: Ascension continues the story of Daniel Jericho"Jerry" who is different than most. He is just a teenager but he has been thrown into the supernatural world because of the blood running through his veins. I have become addicted to the continuing saga of Jerry rying to figure out what makes his blood so special that vampires are willing to kill to get to him. In this book, we finally get to meet the party responsible for taking out the majority of Black Forest in Blood Heavy. Shortt also introduces several new characters that bring added drama and adventures. There were several twists that I did not expect and I loved it! I enjoyed the ending and the fact that you're left wanting to read so much more. The only negative part of the book, and I didn't feel it was big enough to take away from the rating, was that there were several grammatical and spelling errors. Overall, an excellent book and I can't wait for the next book in the series!

Blood Heavy:Ascension is one hell of an adventure! Strap your seat belt and hang on for the ride of your life! It is full of twists and turns that will keep you guessing until the end.
Jerry is still coping with the knowledge of his unusual blood and the death of his friends. He, with the help of his Uncle Joe, his best friend Goose and his new found friends ,Sophinia, Cass, Claire and Rachel, starts to hunt the evil supernatural creatures to protect his family and the world at large. After these creatures turn up dead, Jerry wonders if he might have a guardian angel protecting him. Jerry is kidnapped and then rescued by Aria, the most beautiful women he has ever seen. Could she be his guardian angel or his worst nightmare?
The author was able to capture my attention through his descriptive details and interesting characters. I enjoyed this story and will be looking forward to the next installment.

Ok, let's get the obvious out of the way: yes there are typos. Yes it is an English author that mistakingly uses some English slang instead of American slang. And Yes, sometimes I think the women's/girls responses aren't quite realistic ( a guy wrote it after all). All that being said, I loved this paranormal action book. I love the character of Daniel Jericho (aka Jerry) and his sarcastic wit. The book is filled with action, and IF there is a dull moment, it lasts for a paragraph at the most. Unfortunately some of our beloved characters don't make it out of this book alive (just like last time) but they won't be forgotten & new characters were introduced. I'm looking forward to the next installment, typos and all!
