*Small spoilers if you haven't read The Zombie Pinocchio*

Hansel & Gretel are Dead starts off where The Zombie Pinocchio left off. Geppetto is being hanged and Hansel & Gretel want to watch it happened just like the rest of the village does. Here we get a glimpse of the ugly stepsisters and I can't wait to reread Zombie Cinderella!

Anyways, Geppetto is going through the change and infects Hansel & Gretel when the executioner chops his head off. Their change isn't right away. Yes, they start to look different on the outside, which is why their mom wants them to be taken out into the woods, but mentally they haven't changed. That is, until they get their first bite of flesh.

If you're a horror and zombie fan then I believe you'll enjoy this short! With a new twist on this classic tale and enticing details, it's like no other. Kevin Richey's work is quite unique and one that makes you crave more if you love the twisted. I loved how the old woman in this short captures the children she wants to eat, this story is definitely not for the weak hearted.

Overall Kevin Richey has done it again! I absolutely enjoyed this new take on Hansel & Gretel and I can't wait to read the next zombiefied fairy tale by him!

I received a free copy of this book for review.

This is the second installment in the Zombie Fairytale series and its just as gross as the first one. Which, if you like zombies, that's a good thing. This is a twist on the story of Hansel and Gretel. After they have been infected with the zombie plague they are left by their parents to die in the woods. They make their way thru the woods to find the home of a canniballistic old hag and as the living dead deal out justice. This is definitely a unique and original telling of this fairytale that dishes out karmic justice for those that are abusive to children. I would recommend this to those over 18 due to the bloody nature of this story, but if you are into horror you should give this one a try. Its not necessary to read the first one in this series as both are stand alone stories that are set in the same world.

{my thoughts} - This was an interesting take on the Hansel and Gretel story. I was rather intrigued and wasn't able to stop reading it until I had completed it. I like how it followed some of the original story ideas but added them together in a twisted new version. I have come to love reading all things fairytale like, therefore it didn't surprise me that this series had peeked my interest. If you like zombies and fairytales, you are bound to enjoy these books.

{reason for reading} - I was given a copy of this book by the author in return for an honest review.

It's never a good sign when you fall asleep in a 45page book because you're bored. These books are not for me. I didn't feel any attachment to any of the characters, I was bored, there wasn't enough scary stuff to make it a horror, it wasn't anything other than a bit yucky for a page.

This story starts with the execution of Gepetto (from the Pinocchio story), and then proceeds into a seemingly ordinary Hansel and Gretel... Until it's not! I liked how much the original story elements had been preserved in this one, and how strong a bond we see between the siblings. The end's gross though!

As someone who's not really into zombies, I wasn't sure I would enjoy these stories, but as a free boxset (it was on offer when I bought it), I thought it was worth a look as I do love fairytales, and I wasn't disappointed. They are both very different from, and yet contain very clear nods to the originals. All have zombie plague themes running through them, and you need to read through them in the boxset order as there are references to the earlier stories in the later ones. These are definitely not for children, as they are very violent and often disturbing stories, but if you like fairytale retellings and/or zombies, this is definitely a set of short stories for you!

Kevin Richey's second installment to his above stellar Zombie Fairy Tales is a delightful spin on the classic Hansel and Gretel tale. The story has dark humour running through it and there are times where you will be smiling to yourself or laughing out loud.

Richey has even broaden the canvas by introducing characters that will undoubtedly make appearance in later additions which is a fantastic touch making this land of fairy tales feel more connected.

His use of characterisation is excellent and the violence is slick and fast. He has a real talent to make you feel for these characters which considering the subject matter, is not an easy task, but he is able to do this fantastically.

The last lines of the story are chilling but humerous which I do not want to give anything away, but it definitely makes it stick in your head. It will haunt and make me laugh for days to come.

This is another excellent chapter or episode to read. I highly recommend this very talented author. I can't wait to start the next installment.

As a side note, the cover art is fantastic and brilliantly constructed.

I love Fairy tale reinventions and as soon as I stumbled across a Zombie one on Amazon I was sold. Hansel and Gretel in Kevin Richey's retelling stay very close to the Grimm version we all know and love. Unlike the Grimm version Hansel and Gretel are infected with a Zombie virus at the beginning of the story. I don't want to give any of it away but the progression from curious little children to Zombies was fantastic. At the end I was left shouting OMG several times. Yeah this short story was THAT good. I love also that this story includes other well known Fairy Tale figures. Since this is a serialized short all the stories and characters intertwine and that is just really neat to see. If your put off by the $2.99 price tag don't be. I know I'm gushing but this short was really worth it and I hope at the end of the year they come out in a single bound paperback edition. I know I for one will be buying it! I'm giving Hansel and Gretel Are Dead ★★★★.

I honestly loved this story so much. I've always found the story of Hansel and Gretel particularly fascinating and this little gem in which the old witch actually harvests the hearts of children was, well, nothing short of fantastic. I honestly can't even begin to explain why I enjoyed this one so. However, the end was definitely a big factor. The choice that Hansel and Gretel must face at the end was, well, nothing short of brilliance. I often find myself thinking about it (especially since my Humanities teacher loved to talk about the need to eat brains and this story really made me feel as though I were experiencing that need).

Honestly, this series just gets better and better! I can't wait to read more.

I was not really a fan of this story.

It was too long and drawn out for me. The story felt unnecessarily stretched and may have worked better if it were more concise.

Also the narration felt disjointed. While the narrator remains third-person omniscient throughout the story, the focus of the narration switches characters to focus on a certain person's thoughts and feelings. This also felt unnecessary and didn't really add to the work.

For me, the ending was pretty predictable.

There is a fair amount of gore in the story, but not as much as Richey's stories about Pinocchio and Cinderella (from what I recall; it's been a while since I read them).

Overall, the story was long and dull in my opinion.

"The children watched as the light of the lantern grew dimmer. Before they rounded the corner, their mother looked back, her eyes glowing in the candlelight. But it wasn't for one last glimpse. It was to make sure they didn't follow."

"If they did that to adults. If they did that to adults."

"Her last thought, before the fire overwhelmed her mind, was of the corpses. Of how it's indecent for children to wear shoes if they have no place to go."

"He thought his children had forgiven him, that they would all live happily ever after. And then his children chewed the smile off his face."

You can never break the bond of siblings, and in Hansel and Gretel are Dead book #2 in the series, that bond is not broken not even in death. I love how other characters from other fairy tales are crossed over in to some of the books, Kevin Richey does a great job. Mom and dad take the children to the woods and leave them and they get their "just desserts" and they find the witch who too gets her "just dessert" and then someone else who you thought got their "just dessert" does in the end. This is wickedly sweet. Onto book number 3.

I thought I loved Zombie Cinderella and then I read this and was blown away! Not only dose this have some creepy horror filled moments but there is allot of black humor where you know it's really sick to laugh but you can't help it. And the books have started to become more of a complete world now were there aren't stand alone. Here we are with Hansel and Gretel but we meet Geppetto, it's a really lovely touch. Brilliant book, you wont be disappointed!

This Fairy Tale was a little on boring side. Started out good and ends Happily Ever After..... Well for Zombiefied Hansel & Gretel that is, because they finally get to eat.

Still looking forward to the rest of series.

Another fairy tale given a zombie twist.

Not bad (though so far the Cinderella tale is my favourite).

Definitely time to read something that doesn't involve zombies now...
