Hayle Coven Histories #2

Fire and Illusion

Seeking Jack Bishop

“Are we sure we have the right place?” I didn’t want to doubt Josephine, but all we had was the coin and her sorcery. Even she admitted in the beginning there was a chance it wouldn’t work.

She simply pointed at the large sign hanging on the fence. “Brindle Holdings.” But which Brindle? Samuel, or his sister, Georgina? The woman who my mother trusted me with, her own very best friend? Could the woman be playing us all false?

Not that it mattered, really. I was a fugitive. Whether Georgina was in league with her brother or not, the coven was convinced of my guilt. And that was all she needed to burn me at the stake, innocent of Samuel’s actions or not.

Auburdeen Hayle is supposed to be in London for her own protection. But since she chose to help and befriend Jack Bishop, everything she knows and understands has fallen to pieces around her. Worse, her friend is lost and in the hands of those who want to use him as a weapon, being slowly devoured by the living metal that infects him. Hunted by the coven meant to protect her and the constabulary being controlled by the very man who holds Jack captive, Burdie is forced to ally herself with those to whom truth and honesty are a convenience.

I write a lot of paranormal books for someone who is afraid of the dark. And I wonder why I have to sleep with the lights on. Sometimes life is a teenaged B horror movie and I'm the one who investigates when the scary music is playing. But the voices are calling and resistance is… Yes. I am a Star Trek geek, too. And a fan of RPG’s. With a slight coolness factor since I've been told I'm allowed to join the pops.

Naw. I like being a nerdy girl :)

Entertaining, but cliffhanger endings are not nice.

If you read the first book in this series, then you were dying to find out what happens next to Burdie. I had a couple of other books I had to read before I read this one, and IT WAS KILLING ME! I just HAD to know what happened next. I literally read this book in less than 24 hours, pretty much non stop.

Burdie is a hot headed witch who has found out that there is something dreadfully wrong with her magic at the end of book one. She has also found out that the boy crushing on her, and son of her host family in London, is trying to destroy her life. And for what? All because she turned down his advancements. She had feelings for Hugh, but not the feelings that he thought she had. Now Burdie wants nothing more than to get him out of her life since he had pretty much doomed her to being burned at the stake at the end of book one. The only upside to all this is that she is now stuck travelling with Jack, the boy she thinks she might be falling for, and a very odd group of other magic users she appears to adore. Her life has become an adventure whether she wants it or not.

This entire story centers on finding out what is wrong with Jack and Burdie. She has two magics at odds inside of her and Jack is turning into a gold statue. How did this happen to Jack and how long can Burdie, Vasek, Stella, and Josephine keep Jack from getting into the clutches of the Brotherhood? What does the Brotherhood and Steam Union want Burdie for when her magic seems to be at war within her and mostly is useless? You will have to read to find out. I am not going to give it away! You will be amazed and will really need book three close by when you finish. I know I did!

I would be rating this book much higher if it hadn't just stopped. I think it's deplorable to do a trilogy in this manner. I should have expected it since the first in this series ended, if you could call it that, in the same manner. In a way, I feel manipulated and exploited. I doubt I'll read any more of Patti Larsen's books and would not recommend them to another. Ms. Larsen, you should be ashamed.
