Grāmata piedāvā ielūkoties Otrā pasaules kara frontēs tapušās sešās latviešu karavīru dienasgrāmatās. Trīs to autori karoja Padomju Savienības karaspēkā un trīs – Vācijas bruņotajos spēkos. Viņi visi kopā mums rada stāstu pa latviešu karalaika ikdienu Otrā pasaules kara frontes abās pusēs. Tā ir dzīve kara izraisītajā sociālajā katastrofā, kad daudzi civilizācijas likumi vairs nepastāv, bet cilvēcība, dzīves alkas, māju un Latvijas vērtība iegūst īpaši spilgtu veidolu. Otrajā pasaules karā abās frontēs karoja vairāk nekā 200 000 Latvijas iedzīvotāju, no viņiem dzīvību zaudēja gandrīz puse. Pārsvarā karā gāja bojā jauni cilvēki, kuri vēl nebija nodzīvojuši pusi cilvēkmūžam atvēlētā laika, kurus mājās gaidīja sievas, draudzenes, mazi bērni un vecāki. Grāmata ir veltījums Latvijas Otrā pasaules kara paaudzei.

The original publication earned a radio broadcast that brought the authors into contact with the elderly son of a veteran, who'd never known his father.
Latvian historiography is still dipping its toes into the "hidden and secret history" of both world wars and the occupations in their wake. These diaries voice what couldn't be spoken until 1991.
Most diary writing was done during rest periods; these aren't the best source for action stories or the inner workings of an army unit. The chronological lacunes are large, the time span covered sometimes mere months, with death the common cut-off.
There are many similarities between the two sides: the Latvians on the German seem to be more engaged in construction of log bunkers than the Soviets, whose political commissars found themselves as much amidst the bullets as the other soldiers on the move.

Vēsturiskās liecības no karavīru dienasgrāmatām neabšaubāmi ir vērtīgas, bet noteikti par šo tēmu ir arī daudz interesantāki darbi
