Vandenbrook #1

Compromising Kessen

Rate this book
The last thing career-driven Kessen Newberry wants is to leave her home in Colorado to spend a Season in London, far away from her job, her friends and the memories of her mother. However, her father, the Earl of Newberry, threatens to disinherit her unless she gets in touch with her British roots. She complies, but has no intention of enjoying the experience.

That is until she meets Christian Vandenbrook, the arrogant and irritatingly handsome future Duke of Albany and her father’s business partner. Unfortunately, Christian hates Americans. And coffee. And apparently, Kessen.
A hatred this passionate can only lead to one thing… marriage.

Caught in the middle of a Regency-inspired nightmare, Kessen and Christian are forced to marry in only one week’s time. Resigned to their fate, the two resolve to give the relationship a chance—which would be much easier if everyone would stop interrupting them every time they found a moment alone.

I honestly dove into Compromising Kessen because it worked for a certain challenge. I didn't really know anything about it but hoped the romance would end up being likable. Interestingly, the romance and the characters ended up being okay. Nothing to really write home about or to digest later on. At least that's how I felt after I finished the book.

The romance was something. It definitely gave me whiplash with the whole I like you, but we can't do anything at the moment. Oh, I want to kiss you and so much more but first marriage. Eh, the whole push and pull dance could only go on for so long. Once they were married, things pretty much simmered down drama wise. We also got zero to no conflict throughout this as well.

Which, yes, definitely bored the heck out of me. At the moment, I don't really have any desire to jump into the sequel. I might dive into it if it ends up working for a challenge down the road, but right now - no thanks.

Well, this is the first work of Rachel Van Dyken I've ever read and honestly, I'm thinking why haven't I ever read anything from her until now.

The book was good and the cover was perfectly gorgeous! It's definitely one of my most fun reads. It's a bit different from other Contemporary Romances because it's like a Modern Day Regency Romance. It's like both Historical and Modern Contemporary Romance in one book which I think is brilliantly done by the author. The characters are well likable. Christian and Kessen are quite good because the author make them work. I must say that I love love love their amusing chemistry. And the other characters are quite fun too. I think 'FUN' is what this book is all about.

I loved reading this because it's hilarious! And the way the author wrote their dialogues and interactions with one another is quite natural and fun. I must say that the wit is also one of the things I loved about this book. The pacing of the story is just right. There are no dull moments. The only thing I might complain about this book is that, I think the depth was overshadowed by the hilarity and funniness of the plot. I could have enjoyed this book even more if it was given a little more depth.

Overall, I think the book is good for readers who just wants to sit and relax for a while. For those who wants a light read that you can laugh out loud on your down time, then you just can't afford to miss this book. This one is a keeper!

I'm thinking I might stalk Rachel Van Dyken's other works!

I'm between 3.5-4 on this one. I definitely enjoyed it. The storyline was cute (I LOVE when the main characters start out hating each other!), I loved the wit and sarcasm, and the characters were great. I might have even liked the two side characters, Duncan and Nick, as much as the main ones! I found myself actually laughing out loud at some parts.

That being said...and I can't believe I'm going to say this...but I think I could have done with less kissing. I mean, I understand being madly attracted to someone. But the physical attraction felt like the main ingredient for Kessen and Christian instead of the icing on the cake. And while the interruptions were at some points hysterical, I kept thinking if they weren't interrupted, I bet they would have slept together right away. And I prefer love stories where the tension lasts longer, the love story grows, and they're choosing not to jump in bed together--instead of just being stopped every time. And honestly, since every time they were alone they were making out, after awhile the tension was gone and it was simply lust. And I love the tension. Don't get me wrong I LOVE some good kissing in books (and it's a waste of a book for me if there isn't some good tension/passion)...it just seemed a bit excessive in this book, and for me lost some of the tension/sizzle/swoon-worthiness after awhile because I was expecting it. It also made it a little hard for me to believe they were actually falling in love instead of just in lust.

Also, I would have liked the epilogue to be further in the future than the same night as the chapter before. That way, it could have shown that they were able to deepen their relationship while still keeping the fire alive. :)
But all in all, I still enjoyed it...I think it would make a cute movie because the storyline and characters were good and there were plenty of great lines/laugh out loud moments/scenes. And if they had just kept a little more of the tension alive and not made out in what seemed like every.single.scene, it might have been a solid 4 or 5 star for me.

Kessen is half British and after her mother dies, her dad's greatest wish is for her to return to her British roots. He sends her to England to help with that part of their business empire and to experience a season and she almost immediately meets Christian--who runs things on that end and is extremely attractive. A love-hate relationship ensues and sparks fly, especially after they are found in a compromising situation and her grandmother demands that they marry. It's almost like an arranged marriage or a marriage of convenience, but they don't seem to mind.

Duncan and Nick, the best friends, really spiced up the story and had me laughing in quite a few places. I love how spunky Kessen is and how perfectly imperfect Christian is. Their chemistry was sizzling. Although this book is technically clean, there are some pretty intense make out scenes and some thoughts that almost head toward improper, but they save themselves for marriage. What I really appreciated was when the characters swore, it said they swore instead of spelling out the words. I'll definitely be checking out more of this author's work.

I am a huge fan of Ms. Van Dyken I have enjoyed every read but this one takes the cake. I think it is my favorite so far. The plot and storyline are solid and had me grinning ear to ear. I was captivated by all the witty banter in this contemporary regency romance. Kessen is such a fun heroine who is a hopeless romantic at heart. I liked getting to know her and Christian takes things in stride and has many surprises up his sleeve.

Nick and Duncan were icing on the cake. Having your best friend around to stir up trouble is the best. And boy were they creative! I did think that Kessen's friend Sammy should have been at the big event with Nick towards the end of the story. I simply Loved this story. Ms. Van Dyken has out done herself. I would love to read Duncan's story hint hint. I look forward to many more stories by Ms. Van Dyken. As always this is a clean read no sex but did have some swearing.

4 Compromising Kessen

I enjoyed the heck out of this book.

Kessen & Christian meet and have a love hate thing going on. Both family really want them become a love match.

The wit and banter that goes on in this book or any Rachel Van Dyken book gets me every time. I love how each character are always so strong but yet have a weakness and its usually the other character. ;)

Just like in this book.

Duncan and Nick are Kessen and Christian’s best friends and they take it upon themselves to keep Kessen and Christian on the straight and narrow but they all have fun along the way.

I <3 a HEA and this baby has that in spades. It’t not like anything I have read in a while and I think that is why I liked it so much.

*You don't have to like my review but its 100% my opinion, and I am allowed to have it.*

Christian - ”I don’t think I would ever be happy with just one part of you.”
It was the most romantic thing anyone had ever said to her in her entire life. It was easy to throw compliments at women; it was quite another thing to want her soul as well.

AHHH!! This book is a good kind of ridiculous. I thoroughly enjoyed its absurdity. There are so many good lines and perfect moments. Perfect! Oh, and there's lots of kissing. Splendid! I liked that they were unpredictable and hot.

He kissed her like he was going off to war. And she kissed him back like it was true.

Yes, loved the kissing.

Christian and Kessen share a few things in common. They're both nobility. They both have aristocratic, wealthy, controlling fathers who want them to marry. They both make assumptions about the other's country. They fight and kiss and fight and kiss. It really is all such good fun. =D I liked that they have equally sharp wits and so they're constantly one upping each other. Their banter is constantly back and forth like a ping pong match.

Should she strike his pride again? Yes. Yes, she should.

Kessen is so naughty. There's no other word for it. I loved her character. She is so my girl. She likes to get physical and solving problems by throwing things is not beneath her.
Kessen is half-British, half-American. She clings to her practical American culture though she does appreciate some of the ways of the British. She's a romantic but she's a business girl too and it's her heart's desire to inherit her father's empire.
Kessen's main problem with Christian is that she misreads him constantly. She mistakently thinks that he hates her, or isn't interested or whatever. Basically, she gets it all wrong.

Christian is a silly hero who judges Kessen and actually calls her, “America”. How cliché can you get? But he makes up for his immaturity in so many areas. His first act of kindness with Kessen is to share a jar of peanut butter with her when she's upset. CUTE! I also liked that he's the perfect balance of masculinity and reality. He's very macho but he knows when he's down - he has several un-masculine moments. And the kisses! Don't forget the kisses! Christian can absolutely not keep his hands off her. I love that in a hero.

Kessen - “And I think it’s safe to say everyone knows how you feel ... seriously, you have issues. You can’t go around just kissing people and pouncing on them.”

I loved Christian's sarcasm.
“Wha—?” Kessen’s vocabulary was slowly deteriorating.
Christian - “America, I had no idea you could be so eloquent. Tell me, is it my title, my fortune, my good looks, or my ability to save you from this disastrous event which is the reason for your inability to speak?”

And the crazy thoughts that go through his head.
“Upset we nearly lit the house on fire with our kissing?” she teased, patting him on the head. She was so patronizing; forget kissing. He wanted to trip her.

BFF
I loved the way both Christian and Kessen's best friends, Duncan and Nick, banded together to make sure that their friends were happy. Duncan and Nick are hilarious and actually quite cute together though completely straight. They take their roles of counselors, chaperones and facilitators very seriously.

Nick - ”There will be no more prolonged kissing...Did you see the look in his eyes, Duncan? He had half a mind to ravish her right underneath the waterfall!”
“He does lack a certain class,” Duncan agreed.

4.5 Stars because it just got too weird and random for me.

This was charming! I loved how lighthearted it was, I caught myself smiling a lot throughout the book. Christian and Kessen had great chemistry, I liked their banter. I also loved their friends Nick and Duncan, they were a riot. I loved how they were trying to keep them apart before the wedding and also how they wanted to help them get to know each other. I think the characters would probably die if they knew I've never had a drop of coffee or tea!

There was a lot of kissing in this book! They couldn’t keep their hand off each other. And while I think that’s important in a relationship, I also think there are more important things for long-term success. By the end I still kind of felt the main component for their relationship was lust. I hope that when things mellow out and they settle down they are able to build on their friendship and have their HEA.

Overall, a fun escape and I agree with another review that said this would make a fun movie!

Such a cute story. I absolutely loved the characters. I loved Kessen's personality. Who am I kidding I loved Christian, and the BFF's - Nick & Duncan too! What fun characters. Lots of lol moments.

That being said, the make-out scenes were very passionate, starting to way cross the borderline. Seems like the probably would've gone all the way before marriage (even though they both seemed like they didn't want to) if they hadn't been constantly interrupted. But they waited and I am glad that when they swore they just said they did rather than spell out the words.

So, not exactly clean, wouldn't recommend to young readers at all. Mature audience definitely.

little leary about this one since it wasnt a Regency Romance. I really do love being proven wrong :) I LOVED this book...it is like the perfect marriage of Regency Romance and Mondern Day. I absolutely adored half-brit American born Kessen and her personality getting under the skin of the future Duke of Albany :) These two spark from the moment they meet! I totally recommend this read it was refreshing and funny!

There was a time in the book that I was a little frustrated with the characters. Also I would forget that the character are suppose to be older then me, I am 20 and they seemed like teenagers. This was a cute book and is also clean even though the title seemed a little misleading. I will say that it is a pg-13 rating. I loved the cover. I give it *3 1/2 *stars.

Review:
"Compromising Kessen" was a definitely good fun romance read with it being a modern day but yet it had bits of history in the story.
Both of these together made this story a fantastic read. It was one that was hard to put down until I was finished. I really like all the humor it had bringing out a lots of interesting situations that you will only have to read and find out just what it is all about. I was definitely laughing out loud all the way through this storyline. The novel had some awesome characters: Kessen, Christian, Nick and Duncan.... only to name a few but there are some more that you will find interesting in this read. It is very good how the author is able to draw you into the story.

Certainly, Kessen and Christian were made for each other and let's not
forget Nick and Duncan... with all of their craziness... in this story was just wonderful! I would not mind having friends like Nick and Duncan!

If you are in for a fun and humorous ride... look no farther..."Compromising Kessen" will be a good read for you.

"When you say Season," she said calmly, "you mean summer or winter, correct?"

Her father's face turned red. It was as if she had just committed treason. Seriously. What was with British people? They didn't hug, and they sang their national anthem as if they ruled the world, which in fact was actually quite the opposite of true.'

For every female that has dreamed her life would turn into a Regency romance novel, Compromising Kessen is a dream come true.

Filled to the brim with hilarity, gorgeous men, swoon-worthy displays of affection and a power struggle between tea and coffee, this book was a treat to read. From a fake kidnapping and police officer impersonations, to intense paintball battles, Kessen's tale has it all...including a dashing duke who she just can't seem to resist!

It takes two to tango (or waltz). Can Kessen & Christian work together and, maybe, even fall in love?

The beginning of the book held promise. But then it didn't go anywhere - just chapters of the same thing over and over again (I must kiss you, but I shouldn't because we're not married, oh wait, we've been interrupted again). Once the marriage was agreed to, there was no conflict of any description, no challenges to overcome. Overall I liked the characters and banter, but felt the lack of plot let the story down.

When you want a nice, fluffy read without much conflict and a lot of goofing off, pick this up.

If you want any depth, move on to something else. There were holes in the plot and their two friends basically had the same personality. Though, that's not the only thing it lacked. If the author had made us wait a little longer for their first kiss and had them at least pretend to hate each other a little longer, I would have loved it. Timing is everything.

So, again, it was fluffy. Sometimes fluffy is nice.

One would imagine that it would be difficult to be the offspring of nobility. High expectations abound, and it’s all too clear in today’s society that this is the case, as power and prestige in our society equal more and more scrutiny with the advent of the internet and 24/7 news. Therefore, imagine being the subject of this scrutiny as the daughter of a nobleman, and you too would want to get as far away from it as possible.

In Compromising Kessen we are introduced to Kessen Newberry, a hard working, polite, kind, and all around nice girl who just happens to be the daughter of England’s Earl of Newberry. Although she gets to fortunately avoid all of this British stuffiness by living in Colorado, she is inescapably called to spend a season in London by her father, which she begrudgingly accepts in order to hold her place in her father’s successful and profitable tea company. Her mood is about to change however, as she meets a Mr. Christian Vandenbrook, who is not only devastatingly handsome, but incredibly arrogant as well. A business partner of her father’s, Christian is also the future Duke of Albany. After a nightmarish turn of events, Kessen and Christian find that they must marry in one week’s time after only knowing each other for not much longer than that. This would be much easier for Kessen to accept but for the fact that many of Christian’s habits and mannerisms irritate her, especially his hatred of Americans (although she sometimes finds it amusing). Regardless, despite their differences they decide to give the relationship a try (knowing it will be a good business venture), and must begin to learn about each other. What they find will definitely surprise you, as the bickering soon turns to an undying affection against all odds.

Rachel Van Dyken has done it again! She has pulled me in to a unique and fun story that had me intrigued from the very beginning. I think her decision to create a fusion of modern, contemporary romance with historical romance was spot on. It contained all of the old charm of a historical romance set in the framework of modern day. For example, Van Dyken created a series of very “modern” activities that Kessen and Christian completed with each other in order to get to know each other better. These included paintball, a trivia contest, and even rock climbing. This was definitely a fun and interesting twist in the story that kept the plot moving right along.

Perhaps my favorite part about the modern/historical romance fusion is the fact that social ques from the historical fiction genre definitely made their way into the modern romance context. One prime example of this was when Kessen and Christian were caught kissing in the garden by the paparazzi. Obviously if this was a purely modern tale, this really wouldn’t be that big of a deal. However, the pressure they face from this public act of affection causes the social pressure to become so great that they must marry. This is definitely a reality in historical romance, as the social and romantic rules of the time dictated that discretion was of the utmost importance. I definitely felt that this was a nice touch that was a tasteful homage to the rules of the past and the more elegant ways things used to be. In all, Van Dyken’s work is fun, fast paced, and a great pleasure to read. If you’re in the mood for a heartwarming romance that has all the great aspects of the era of great romance set in today’s fast paced world, definitely give this one a try.

I originally went with three stars because it's not horrible, but I most certainly didn't like it. I was bored. I was annoyed. I wanted to stop reading. I wanted more. There was no substance. They both fell in love with the outward appearance of the other. All the info they had about the other one came second hand from the best friend. It pissed me off the more I thought about it so I dropped it down to two stars. This was a 1700s era romance disguised as the year 2012. The female lead is supposed to be career driven and focused on taking over her father's company. She meets a guy and basically throws all of it away. She never once thinks about the business. It's like all the hard work she's put in the previous ten years means absolutely nothing because she now suddenly has this guy thrown at her. The male lead is a manwhore who suddenly decides in two minutes that he's completely reformed. They went from hating each other to being in love with each other in 2 minutes because that's what would have happened in a historical romance novel.

Love the hilarious word play between the characters. The Regency flavor in a contemporary setting makes for lots of interesting situations which had me laughing out loud throughout the book.

Kessen, the spoiled rich American who despises everything that has to do with her father's British heritage is forced to go to London for some cultural immersion. There she meets Christian Vandenbrook, the heir to the dukedom, who likewise hates everything American.

A very light, enjoyable read. Highly recommend.

3.5 STARS: Definitely original!! How great for us regency lovers- a modern day regency romance!
My ONLY issue with this story was that, in the year 2012, the leading lady would go along so easily! Maybe it's because of her love of historical romance, but she took the news way too easily for me.
Compelling read overall!

I am not one that usually enjoy a historical romance and because of that I had been a little hesitant about reading Compromising Kessen . This book is a perfect example of don’t judge a book by its cover. This is not a historical romance at all. This is an amazing book set in present time that looks into what it is like to be part of the high society with old money in Europe.

What an amazing love story. Kessen and Christian have an instant connection that neither one of them wants to admit. The relationship between the two of the advances faster than any that I have ever seen but Rachael makes this happen seamlessly. This book is 285 pages but takes place over a week. It is amazing how so much can happen in only the span of a week.

One of my favorite parts is the comic relief that is given from both of their best friends Duncan and Nick. They have the best intentions to help but cause the most mischief. Through it all they all stuck together and made it through.

I love the way I was pulled into the story and immersed into their world. The desire to learn so much about the history of Europe and how things were in the time of old money when it was new is so intriguing. Because of the many emotions that pulled me into this book and the desire to learn so much more about a subject I wasn’t aware I had a desire to learn about I am giving this a 5 rose rating.

This really shouldn’t have been published

Bad grammar, incomplete scenes and descriptions of people/places/situations, adults acting like children (not in a good way”, no explanation for the entire premise of the book are a few of the problems this book had. Plus an ending that read like someone just mashed together a few story-ending tidbits and called it “the end”.
I am a fan of many of this author’s book which is why I read this -but this is rude to your fan base and makes me want to not read any future books. The authors introduction gave the impression that the book needed minor editing but in reality this needs the beginning and ending to be rewritten and freshly edited. I gave this two stars only because the middle has a little bit of good humor (more in line with the author’s more recent works) but the rest was truly bad. Don’t waste your time with this draft story.
