Ο δόκτορας Μος, μια διεστραμένη επιστημονική ιδιοφυΐα προσπαθεί να επιτύχει τη μεταμόσχευση εγκεφάλου σε ανθρώπους με ολέθρια αποτελέσματα. Ο γέρος αρχιγκάνστερ Τάμπλοτ προσπαθεί να παρατείνει τη ζωή του, μέσα από την επιτυχή έκβαση των πειραμάτων του Μος. Ο άνεργος υπάλληλος χρηματιστηριακού γραφείου Γουντ, προσπαθεί να ξεφύγει από τη μοίρα του "πειραματόζωου", στην οποία η εγκληματική συμμορία τον έχει καταδικάσει, ενώ ο δημοσιογράφος Γκίλροι της Μόρνινγκ Ποστ προσπαθεί να αποκαλύψει την όλη επιχείρηση.

Τα τέσσερα αυτά πρόσωπα, οι κινήσεις και οι χαρακτήρες των οποίων συνθέτουν αυτήν την παράξενη "Υπόθεση μορφής", σχηματίζουν τελικά το παζλ μιας εικόνας, που μόνο σε ένα θρίλερ επιστημονικής φαντασίας θα μπορούσε να είχε σχηματιστεί.

Horace Leonard Gold was a science fiction writer and editor most noted for bringing an innovative and fresh approach to science fiction while he was the editor of Galaxy Science Fiction, and also wrote briefly for DC Comics. Born in Canada, Gold moved to the United States at the age of two. He also published under the pseudonyms Clyde Crane Campbell, Dudley Dell, Christopher Grimm, and Leigh Keith.

1939 Retro Hugo Nominee for Best Novella

Ah the evil men will commit in pursuit of false immortality.

Favorite paragraph: "Bacon code, three centuries; Confederate code, fifteen years; Russian code, unsolved. Cryptographers must look forward to eternity."

Νουβέλα επιστημονικής φαντασίας, γραμμένη από τον Οράτιο Λ. Γκολντ το μακρινό 1938. Ενδιαφέρουσα αν και αναληθοφανής κεντρική ιδέα, η εκτέλεση όμως μου φάνηκε μάλλον μέτρια.

Ένας δημοσιογράφος της εφημερίδας Μόρνινγκ Ποστ προσπαθεί να βρει τι κρύβεται πίσω από το "κύμα" κατατονικών που έχει πλήξει την πόλη. Κάποιος ειδικός χειρουργός κάνει πειράματα πάνω σε ανθρώπους; Η απάντηση είναι θετική: Ο διάσημος δόκτορ Μος προσπαθεί να επιτύχει μια μεταμόσχευση εγκεφάλου, από ένα ανθρώπινο σώμα σ'ένα άλλο. Στην όλη ιστορία μπλέκεται ένας γερασμένος αρχιγκάνγκστερ που είναι στα τελευταία του και χρηματοδοτεί τον γιατρό και ένας άνεργος υπάλληλος γραφείου που θα πέσει θύμα του διεστραμμένου γιατρού.

Με τέτοιο σενάριο, με μια προσπάθεια να φανεί πιο αληθοφανές, θα μπορούσε κάλλιστα να γυριστεί ταινία επιστημονικής φαντασίας, σαν και αυτές που γύρισε ο Κρόνεμπεργκ τέλη δεκαετίας '70 αρχές δεκαετίας '80. Από άποψη γραφής είχε αρκετά προβληματάκια, έδειχνε τα (πολλά) χρόνια της και η πλοκή σε σχεδόν κανένα σημείο δεν με συνεπήρε. Ανάπτυξη χαρακτήρων φυσικά μηδενική, η εξέλιξη της ιστορίας σχετικά αναμενόμενη, τίποτα το ιδιαίτερο.

Πάντως η ιδέα για την εποχή της ήταν αρκετά μπροστά και κάποια μικρά κομμάτια της ιστορίας μου φάνηκαν συμπαθητικά, οπότε το βιβλίο γλιτώνει χειρότερο βαθμό.

While I was reading this short novella, I had an important discussion with my wife about what we should do if I find myself in a dog's body. I figure if I read enough books, then I will be prepared for every possible thing that could ever happen to me.

This short novel was fun and really well done. We really get to know the character of Wood, and get to experience the frustration that comes with being trapped in a dog's body. How do you communicate? How do you get your body back?

I enjoyed that it started out as a mystery because we didn't know who was performing these strange mind transplanting surgeries or why. Then it turned into more of a problem solving story as Wood tried to set things right.

I had to purchase an original copy of Astounding Stories from 1938 in order to read this story. It was almost disintegrating in my hands, but it was worth the trouble to get a chance to read it.

I read this story because it was nominated for the Retro-Hugo Award. It kept my interest from start to finish, although the ending was a bit of a cop out to force a happy ending. It's essentially a mystery ala Columbo where the reader knows what the crime is and who did it, and the fun is in seeing how the protagonist figures it out. The writing style seemed quite modern, with characters that one could care about. I read the story in The Mammoth Book of Classic Science Fiction: Short Novels of the 1930's.

Καλουτσικο θριλερ επιστημονικης φαντασιας γραμμένο την δεκαετία του '30.
Όχι κάτι φοβερό, αλλα σε οποιον αρέσει το είδος είναι μια καλή επιλογη.
