The Wolf's Mate #1

Jason & Cadence

Rate this book
For 14 years, alpha wolf Jason has watched his partially marked mate Cadence live her life without him. Circumstances force his hand and he must find a way to get her to uncover her buried memories of their past before someone else steps up to take her from him.

For as long as she can remember, hybrid wolf Cadence has loved Jason with every fiber of her being, but he’s consistently shoved her away until the love that’s there is bound tightly in anger and shame. No one can take his place in her heart, but that doesn’t mean that there aren’t wolves willing to try.

Will Cadence be able to get through Jason’s icy demeanor to the heart of the boy she’s always loved? Can Jason undo the past so they will have a future together?

This book contains red-hot werewolf loving, plenty of neck biting, and misuse of a kitchen counter. The Wolf’s Mate is a book for mature audiences only and contains sexually explicit content.

"We were made for each other, she belongs to me, she’s my female alpha."

In the beginning I was totally into it, caught up in seeing what Jason would do to get Cadence back. Jason was a yummy alpha and Cadence was the perfect alpha female, they were very big into biting and marking their territory ;)BUT I couldn't really get into the story surrounding the two. You know that part where everything comes together, well at first I was all happy and excited, then I realized I had about another 30% more to go... so I kept reading waiting for something else to happen that's when it started to go downhill for me, I found myself rushing through the pages just to finish.

I really, really want to know if he was a virgin/celibate during those years apart, after he MARKS her as mate. It kept nagging my mind, because he was 14 at the time, and knew she was his mate, without a doubt, so either he lost his virginity before that, but already having the feeling she was his mate. Or even worse and lost it after MARKING her as his... Because if he was a virgin, I think he would have mentioned it, like he hinted at being celibate... For me she had a huge excuse for not being, since she doesn't even remember and was pushed away and rejected by him multiple times growing up, but Jason... I WANT TO KNOW... Damn...
I did like the author's writing style, and if not for that nagging thought/doubt, I would have rated it higher...

I was very excited to read this book, I have a fascination with wolves and shifters so it seemed like this would be the book for me.
I liked the characters, Candace had had it rough for a long time and I loved her determination to just get on with it. She was feisty and I cannot resist a feisty female. Jason, I liked as well. If we didn't have his point of view, then you would just think he was a jerk, but we do, so I could feel sorry for him and his impossible situation.
The tension between this couple was awesome and I was hanging on for every meeting and confrontation with them. I will also add that when this couple got down to the business, the sex was steamy and satisfying, just what you would expect from a paranormal romance.

The problem with this book, for me, was that even after everything was wrapped up and the problems solved, the couple reunited and the bad guy eliminated this book kept going. I thought that maybe we were going to get another issue pop up, but it just sort of waffled on until the end. To me there was an extra 30% of this book that we just did not need.
I hate saying things like that because obviously the writer has their reasons but from that point on in the book, my interest waned.
That is the reason for my 3 star rating. It would have been a lot higher if not for that.
I will still try and read more books in this series, because I believe it has promise and first books are always the hardest, because of all the world building and getting the feel for everything etc. Still, it was a solid paranormal romance, 3 stars.

The first 50% bugged me with the triangle vibe. Then I liked Jason so I kept reading. T love shifter books but one part went past my comfort zone. I did like the writing and it flowed well. I just liked this one..didn't love it.

I need to add the the majority of the safe readers like reading the heroine with other men so they had this marked as safe. There are some of us who don't want to read our heroines or heroes with other people. This is not a safe book. The heroine kisses another man several times , dances with him till she us turned on. She did do these things due to thinking that the hero didn't want her but to me ..it still made me nauseated to read it and so this book really isn't safe at all. It wasn't cheating ..but it even felt like cheating to her. The hero part is safe so those readers who like the women who do those things but not the men will be happy. I felt like I wanted her to be stronger.

I fell in love with R.E. Butler's writing after reading A Curve of Claw and a Flash of Fang. This was a fun read about a young wolf that marked his mate at a very young age. So young in fact that his father forbid him or any of the wolves in their pack from telling her what the marks meant.

description

Well 14 years later, everyone in the pack has remained tight lipped and Cadence is confused as to why no wolf will touch her or even ask her out on a date. The wolf of her dreams, sexy alpha Jason, abruptly stopped being her best friend at age eleven and has been a jerk to her every since. Cadence is now home from college and looking for a wolf to settle down with. So when Chris, next inline alpha for another pack, asks her out and starts courting her, she accepts. Nothing spells angst like a partially mated male wolf having to compete to win the affections of his mate.

Though this was a great story, I am not a big fan of angst, especially when said angst could be overcome by one simple conversation. I also got tired of alpha Jason thinking about causing violence ie punching a wall, or growling at his competition, but never doing it. He had such a tight leash on his wolf that he never displayed any of the traits that make weres/shifters so awesome. There was a scene where Chris touched his woman very suggestively while on stage, in public. Hell, that action alone was worth a fight, or a growl, or even a verbal assault. I tend to like my alphas to be a little more raw and animalistic.

The first part of the story dragged a bit until all of the angst was resolved and then the story morphed into my kinda book. An erotic paranormal love story with tons of action: fighting, kidnapping, and violence. Jason even became the possessive alpha male that every female longs to read about. This was a wonderful story and I truly liked all of the characters. I was hoping to see Callie and Michael find love together because they were my absolute favorite supporting cast, but that doesn't appear to happen in the upcoming books. This book was a solid 3.5 star and would have rated higher minus the angst.

2 and a bit stars maybe.....

It was ok...... Candace was a little unlikable to me she seemed to be able to flip her emotional switch like a pancake often with messy conclusions.... Jason was ok but his whole story of how he had to stay away from Candace was a bit unbelievable especially how she comes to the revelation later on..... The plot was a little bland, and the POV flipped around a bit too much for my liking.... still an easy quickie for anyone loving shifter wolves.....

It was really good at first and sorta fizzled at the end. It was a sweet read and very sexy at times. It definitely filled my "were"/ craving.

I might read the next book but its not on my priority list.

Jason & Cadence
By R.E. Butler

I very much enjoyed this book and the main characters. Cadence was a strong woman and while Jason had a temper at times they had plenty of chemistry. It was interesting to see him screw up over and over and try to figure out how to win her back. I hated Chris from the start.

This book is definitely one to reread, but because I had to buy it to read it I looked ahead at the reviews to see if I would like to continue on with the series. What I saw made me determined not to. I hate when authors destroy established relationships that are wonderful. So I'm passing on the rest of the series.

The book was in both Jason and Cadence's POV. The angst level is medium to high.

A nice unusual story line saves this book from a lower rating. Mind you, it's a pleasant, if bland, reading, but I'm shocked to say it should have been a novella or a novelette. :P
At 60% you get your HEA, then you get the aftermath of it: reactions, playing house, wedding planning, marital bliss, etc. My interest dropped rapidly. You usually want more when you had a stunning story/couple and you can't stop wanting more. Well, this isn't such a story, so I wasn't at all thrilled of getting more.

At 0.99 you might want to read it and spend some time relaxing.

This book left a lot to be desired. First the H/h don't get together until a little bit over 50% then by 70% all issues are resolved. The writing felt rushed and stilted....at the beginning I was complaining because she wasn't moving the plot along fast enough then suddenly she's rushing everything and tying it up with a nice little bow. Then you have 30% left of the book and the author is back to dragging this book out for pages and pages.

All in all take a pass on this book, I was being generous by giving it 2 stars.

I read this book at two at the morning because I was stressed out from work, I had trouble falling asleep so I told myself " hey leila, how about reading a fated mate Romance full of angst and where there was plenty of unrealistic problems so you can escape YOUR own problems. ."

This is how I ended up fully reading it til 7:30 am.

And you know what's worse than not liking it?, its the fact that I actually finished it! instead of a much needed sleep...

this was full of WTF momenta
The villain did NOT make sense, the narrating was BAD, and the story progression was full of uncoordinated passages
The only thing that kept me going was the fated mated trope, it was, for once, not rushed nor did they trip and fall inti each others beds.
Thank you author it was VERY appreciated!!

The whole point of this situation was me distressing myself. Did it work? I guess... nah. This just pissed me off and was tiresome as a whole 🥱

This was a good story. Jason and Cadence were engaging characters and their story did keep me interested in finding out what happened next.

Cadence is a wolf hybrid, something that's never happened before. Her mother was a shifter but her father was human. Her mother died during childbirth and something about that infused Cadence with shifter-like powers even though she was never able to change. Cadence's father wasn't too happy about her wolf side and made Cadence miserable growing up.

Jason is the Alpha of his pack and owner of the local garage. Jason and Cadence were neighbors growing up and very good friends. Jason knew early that Cadence was his mate and only wanted to be with her. When Jason knew his first shift was coming and he'd have to separate himself from her until he can control his wolf, Jason decided to mark Cadence. Unfortunately in the middle of things, Jason's father sees it and stops Jason from explaining what it meant, instead using his Alpha power to make her think she got the hurts from falling in to a rose bush. Since Cadence was so young (only 10 yrs old), his "suggestion" made her forget the truth.

Because of Jason's dad's interference, Cadence never found out what really happened. He forbid anyone from talking to Cadence about it which basically screwed Jason over because until Cadence remembers that he marked her and realizes she's mated they can't become full mates. He hasn't been able to move forward with trying to jog her memory because after he pushed her away (rather harshly) when they were kids, Cadence was hurt and felt abandoned and thinking Jason disliked her. After that she took her anger and aggression out on Jason whenever they were near each other. Cadence went away to college and when it was finally time for her to come back home, Jason knows it's time to get her to remember and then win her. He has to do it quickly too because their town has 2 packs. The Alpha of the other pack, Jake, promised to hold his people off Cadence for a month to give Jason a fair shot but after that she's fair game. Unfortunately, Jake isn't a very good Alpha because his son, Chris (who is supposed to be the next Alpha after Jake) decides to make a play for Cadence and makes it practically impossible for Jason to get a chance with Cadence. Jake pretty much seems to look the other way because it's his son that's ignoring his orders so Jason is kind of screwed since he can't just kill Chris (no matter how much he wants to).

Chris basically poaches Jason's territory by taking every single moment he can of Cadence's time and getting the females of his pack to be nice and friendly to her to try to draw her to their pack and away from Jason. Chris starts being pretty underhanded in his attempts to keep Jason and Cadence apart. When Jason manages to get Cadence to take a job at the garage managing the office, Christ tries to hire her away saying she's too good for that place. The whole thing with Chris was kind of messed up, especially since Cadence knows that she could never be with Chris because she loved Jason. If that's the case, why the heck did she keep going out with the slime bucket and letting his kiss her goodnight!?!?! Jason is forced to see them dating and doesn't take things well. On top of this, everyone looks to Cadence to fix this all and make the right choice but because of the "Alpha's edict" making sure no one let on to her what was going on, she didn't even know what she should be doing to make things right. To be honest I thought they really kind of jerked her around in that way, both her and Jason. Chris ends up proving just what a slime he is and things get tough but everyone comes through alright. Jason and Cadence get together but they have to spend some time working through their lingering relationship difficulties but before too long Jason and Cadence are starting their HEA.

This was an enjoyable story. I liked Cadence and Jason overall but I had my frustrations with them both at times. The story was good but there were a few points I didn't consider believable or realistic given the circumstances which is why it didn't get 4 stars. I'll probably read the next book in the series sometime in the future. :D

* note - I listened to the audio version of this book. Overall, the narrator was good but I would have liked the narration better if it didn't see hurried sometimes. It wasn't constant but at times the narration seemed a little too fast.

GOOD: The characteristics of a 3 star book include: interesting characters, a decent storyline, and unique story elements; there was something about the story that I didn’t completely connect with; the book is a solid read. I would recommend it to a friend.

My Thoughts:
I enjoyed Jason & Cadence. Cadence had a external toughness that was unrivaled among the packs but her toughness was tempered by her protectiveness and underlying vulnerability. Jason was all alpha all the time. I liked his character after his motivations became clearer but I honestly didn't care for him too much at the start. He was callous and downright mean to Cadence.

The secondary characters added a genuine level of support to the story. They were well thought out and interacted well with the primary characters. I absolutely loathed Chris. I didn't trust him from the very start of the story. He was beyond crazy but definitely served his purpose in the story.

There were a few elements that this story from being more than three stars. Both deal with the pacing of the story but in different ways. The story seemed to drag along in several spots. For instance, it took Cadence a really long time to figure out what was happening around her. Everyone kept subtly hinting about her "choices" and "options" but she only got frustrated and irritated and never pushed to ask anyone what they were talking about. She would bristle...make a snippy comment...and then let the matter drop. Her behavior just seemed a bit incongruous for someone wanting to know what was going on. The conclusion to the story was also drawn out. There were two earlier moments where the story could have been tied with a bow and nicely ended. However, the author dragged the story along adding, what felt like, filler. The story could have ended at about 75% after Cadence returned home from the rogues but the remaining 25% was just filler. For example, why did Cadence suddenly grow a set of fangs? It was just kind of thrown in with only a cursory explanation. Also, when Jason heavily marked Cadence and his corresponding guilt over it. This plot line felt unnecessary and it didn't significantly add anything to the story.

Although I had a few issues with the story, overall it was an enjoyable, light, and quick read.

How many times can you say I love you on a page, in this book alot it seems! Okay we don't all come out with deep meaning speeches to express our love all the time, I almost got sick of the 'I love you's' - but then in another way it was more realistic!

Jason and Cadence best friends, with sweet memories of playing together as kids, after playing one afternoon Jason decides to make her his mate and marks her, she is too young to be marked and action is taken to protect her, as far as she is concerned jason turned on her and kept his distance. He has hurt her feelings, but she still loves him, not that she will let him see, she hides it behind her feisty personality.

 photo black-wolf_zpsec4cbd5b.jpg

She has her degree in hand and has returned to her home town, that is home to humans and werewolves, cadence is a hybrid wolf/human and does not fit in to any particular set. Since her return people are treating her strange, some are being rude, others trying to be nice. She even has the attention of a hot werewolf, but she only wants Jason but he doesn't want her, so lets see we're this goes!

There is some secrets being kept from her but no one will tell her what's going on, can she figure it out? Why is Jason acting so weird?

What follows is a sweet, sometimes exciting story, occasionally a little drawn out of an alpha werewolf getting his woman. In my opinion it should have finished at around 80%, as the rest was cute and sweet and more normal day to day getting along, it really didn't need it.

Sex, there is a lot of sex in the second half of this book, and biting lots of marking during sex.

 photo bite_zpsf5d8ae7d.jpg

Good characters that came over as very realistic, including all the pack, who will have there own story to follow, which will be on my tbr shelf.

Overall 3.75 stars

R.E. Butler’s, The Wolf's Mate Book 1: Jason and Cadence’s story is an unexpected find. It has a surprising storyline that is full of adventures just waiting to happen. Plunging the reader into the world of wolf shifters where our hero and heroine are woven together by a unique bond that is so strong it survives years of neglect and at points, almost hate. Jason and Cadence's happily ever is a rough and rugged road with lots of hazards and pitfalls for our couple.

Cadence is a hybrid shifter with a really sassy mouth. Born to a full blood shifter and a human father, her birth resulted after her mother was attacked and killed by another shifter. Rugged sexy Jason recognizes at an early age that Cadence is his mate and he must protect her from his beast. Their friendship originated when they were young. It later turns volatile when Jason has to learn to control his beast. During this time their friendship and love becomes tarnished. Cadence feels the ultimate betrayal when Jason turns his back on her, leaving her without her friend and mate.

But there is so much more to their story and without giving away any of the particulars, let me state that this is an excellent beginning to the series R.E. Butler has created. The characters are believable and almost seem human. They own businesses and homes within the community and interact with humans as if they are accepted and not feared. The secondary characters complimented the storyline and add flavor to the mix. This book had drama, deceit, twist and turns and at one point I wasn't sure if Jason even had a chance with his mate! Fantastic addition to anyone's library!

Jason never thought that claiming his best friend and the girl he spend all his childhood with..his love of life...Cade..will lead to complications and he has to suffer in future. To add she never remembers it and its meaning enough to know that he is her mate - true mate.

But all he wants is his beast/wolf to not hurt her..but hes hurting her anyways by ignoring her, being away from her all these 14 years and all he want is to take her in arms and never let go.

Cade never knew why Jason ignored her..but she missed him..hell! he was her heart and love..but how can she say to him when he ignores her and all his pack treats her like low life...yes shes not full wolf and not pack...but she is every bit the person she is..strong,independent and kick ass.

When someone else try to claim cade things turn upside.Jason has to face the enemy and save Cade's life. Can Jason and Cade's love survive all hurdles?

Nice story and werewolves are my weakness *wink*.

The Wolf's Mate is about a wolf named Jason who marked his woman when she was to young and as a result no one could tell Cadence about what happened. This continues for more than a decade. Cadence is in love with Jason but she feels like he does not love her and Jason loves Cadence but he cannot tell her anything.

This one has been popping up on my kindle recommendations list for awhile and for 99 cents I thought why not. Overall the book is a little predictable but for me it still worked. I thought the writing was decent but it could have used some editing especially towards the end when the plot starts to wander a bit. The book has some other challenges but again it is not bad, it kept me entertained and it is a cute story.

I'm rather glad that I read the second book in this series before I reviewed this one. This one needs some editing. A lot of the information was passed in a kind of odd internal dialogue, no matter which character's head we were in. Some of it read like the narration for a fashion show. Either way, I wasn't really impressed. The story was also drawn out and could have been more effective with some judicious cuts.

I can say that it did improve toward the end and that the next story in the series was better done than this one.

It does have very explicit adult situations.

This is one of my favourite wolf shifter books that I have read so far.
I love especially love the scenes in the bar where Cadence takes a bat to a male wolf shifter for touching her friend as well as when Cadence kicks a she-wolf's ass for calling her 'mutt'- oh, I love that part.
This is a book I would happily read again and again.

Not bad, I thought this was going to be a second chance type deal but once the details came out it was actually good. I wanted more from the Chris situation though. You don't get a clear reason on what happened there. Plus, with the other pack leaving it kind of felt like it was taking away from the story. Jake seemed like he knew what was going on as well but the reason behind what he told Jason never came out.

This novel was so weird in some ways but at the same time it was good and enjoyable. I didn't like that Cade didn't remember her mating bite and all the drama that followed afterwards. It totally upset the balance in the story.. especially the end stuff with Chris.

i dont really know how to review this book because on one hand i really liked it and on the other hand after finding out some information for the second book made me really hate this book. does that me sense? i loved how the heroine was strong but i found it so un fucking realistic to wait 14 years for your fucking mate!! this was a werewolf book but honestly it sounded like the hero was no fucking alpha. there was none of the things that i normally love about werewolves in this book and it was so disappointing. also found out in the second book that the hero from this book ends up treating his mate like shit, she's pregnant and cant be bothered to do anything for her and just humiliates her all the time, so hearing about that made me really hate this book, because nothing annoys me more than an author making me like a character but in the next book turning him around to be such a fucking arsehole.
so i definitely won't be reading anymore from this author at all!!

sorry if there is spelling mistakes, i was rushing writing this.

This is the first book in the Wolf's Mate series by R.E. Butler. A friend recommended it to me.

I had mixed reactions to this novel. The writing style felt juvenile to me and I had a difficult time getting into the story, although it did get better as it went on ... or I just adjusted to the author's style.

I enjoyed the storyline of Jason marking Cadence as a child, and then having to retreat and wait for her to grow up while trying to control his wolf. Call me a sucker, but I think that is a sweet tale of childhood romance.

I was less impressed with some of the convoluted storylines. For example, the idea that the previous Alpha's Law still prevented anyone in the pack from discussing the truth with Cadence. Those two Alphas are still alive, just retired, and they should have been able to talk to her themselves, or lift the order once she was of age.

Overall, I enjoyed this short novel but hope that the series improves or I probably will not continue beyond the next one or two.

This is the first book I have picked up by this author and I'm glad I did as it was very enjoyable.
I'm a huge fan of shifter stories and her take on them was interesting. Great character and world development, though one small criticism was that towards the end, after the mating ceremony, it kinda didn't go anywhere interesting, what we got was ok of course but it didn't seem to add anything of huge importance to the story.
A lot of the steamy scenes take place towards the end as well and there does seem to be a lot of rougher type sex, bruising and "clawing" etc.
I liked Jason and I'm so glad we got his POV on why things happened the way they did when he and Cadence were just kids, he was certainly in a difficult position.
Cadence was great, a very strong and sassy woman who didn't take crap from anyone.
Heaps of secondary characters that I hope will get their own stories.
A great start to the series and I look forward to picking up the next one!

I usually love everything by this author but this just missed the mark for me. Didn't like the two H's by the end of the book and wasn't worried about what happened to them.
This book sort of lost its way for me. Apart from being slightly confusing as to wether they were or weren't mates. Jason marked Cadence as children but he does nothing to keep her in his life due to being told to stay away. That is fine as youngsters but once he became alpha surely that is a moot point.
Cadence is a strong woman even if she is a hybrid. She protects her friend from the pack bullies but does not stand up to Jason or go after the man who is her everything. Not alpha behaviour at all, and Jason just lets someone else move in on his unclaimed mate. NOT alpha behaviour.
The whole thing with the third wolf Chris was just overdone to me.

Oh my!

If your a fan of shifters than this book is for you. It has a sassy female protagonist and an equally rough male one. Jason is the alpha of a wolf pack but is missing the other half of himself. Cadence has been in love with Jason for so long and does everything and anything she can think of to push his buttons but when Cades comes back home after college and starts noticing how people are treating her differently. Jason has 4 weeks to convince Cades that he loves her and that they are meant to be. Can Cadence put two and two together before she destroys one pack or boosts another. Can two people find a second chance at love after the fact.
