HENRY is short fiction (8K): Avlin, Texas is just like any other small town. Quiet. A little run down. But mostly full of decent folks. At least, on the surface. Henry knows better. Understands the darkness running underneath. The needs and wants that can ruin everything.
It’s heartbreaking his own Momma doesn’t love him. And that the only person who wants him is a preacher who would mold him in the Lord’s image. Thing is, Henry has a choice. He can let them control him, make him do what they say—or he can use the power within him to take the life he wants. Trouble is, that power comes with a huge price Henry will never be able to pay. And if he tries? The cost could be his his troubled soul.
I write a lot of paranormal books for someone who is afraid of the dark. And I wonder why I have to sleep with the lights on. Sometimes life is a teenaged B horror movie and I'm the one who investigates when the scary music is playing. But the voices are calling and resistance is… Yes. I am a Star Trek geek, too. And a fan of RPG’s. With a slight coolness factor since I've been told I'm allowed to join the pops.
I probably need a different shelf for this stunning short story by Patti Larsen. In a short format, she creates a remarkably complex world, complete with characters. Two storylines are clearly destined to intersect, but I couldn't figure out how, and I was drawn in, wondering just who/what Henry might be. You would think Henry's life was almost as bad as it could be, when a ray of hope appears. And then things get immeasurably worse. I hope there is more to come on Henry's story!
Just read this excellent short story. Loved it! 'Henry' is full of atmosphere, tension and I loved the build up. Creepy, supernatural, full of characters getting their comeuppance but not in a cheery, comfy way. Patti Larsen delivers it in a disturbing, chilling way. Great story, great ending. Will be reading more of Patti Larsen's work
I've known kids like Henry, except that none of them could do what he can. "Henry" is cool and scary and a great read. I LOVED this short story so much I wrote her and asked if she was considering a book about these characters. I want to know MORE.
What a creepy and disturbing story. Thankfully it was short because I think I would have been damaged if I had to read much more. I gave it five stars because I felt like the author meant to trouble my mind, and she did that completely.
