Someone's taking credit for Mark's hard work. A suspension and a fractured wrist are not the expected result of informing his boss. It could be a blessing in disguise, though, when Jacob from Marketing drives him home, and Mark gets a bonus he wasn't expecting.

Liam Grey is a numbers and data nerd by day, an aspiring author and hopeful romantic by night. Both his parents and his teachers fostered an early love of books, though it's doubtful any of them imagined it leading to him writing gay romance. He currently resides in the Pacific Northwest, and is in love with the mutable weather and landscape (though his sinuses politely decline to comment.)

Ok...umm...THAT WAS HOT!! I loved the sex talk between Marcus and Jacob. And Marcus's thoughts were so explicit! One of the hottest scenes I've read in a long time.

What a great story! Smart and concise writing, really funny characters, a huge spark between the MCs, lots of funny banter, and really steamy sex. What more could you ask for?

I loved this short story SO MUCH!!! Not only did it have some of the hottest, intense sex I have ever read, but the dialogue between the characters left me thinking, "holy shit, this is fantastically written!"

Also, there is no fluffy mushiness between the MCs in this story even though they really do like each other. They mask their feelings with name calling, teasing, and snappy retorts which made me giggle with glee. I truly couldn't get enough of it. And the ending left me with a huge satisfied smile on my face.

This went straight to my favorites shelf.

2nd read on 6/15/12.

Great start to this amusing and refreshing romance I got straight into it with both Mark and Jay their sexiness together was fabulous quite a surprise. I loved it plus the witty smart ass talking had me hooked it was both sweet and funny. A short story but well worth it and it would be lovely if we got a follow up on Mark and Jay.

A hot, adrenaline-charged story in which you can practically smell the testosterone steaming off the page. My only beef with Bonus is that it's let down by a rather uninspiring blurb!

Bonus opens with a punch--quite literally, as the narrator, Mark Evans, has just hit his lying colleague Xavier in the mouth. Unfortunately he's done so in front of his boss, who he was visiting with the intention of exposing Xavier's underhand stealing of Mark's hard work--claiming it as his own. Even worse, although Xavier suffers a split lip, Mark is the one who ends up with the bleeding nose, fractured wrist and suspension from work.

This first scene is dramatic without ever tipping into melodrama. Mark's anger and adrenaline surge permeate the narrative. The author reveals more and more of the situation as Mark's adrenaline ebbs and the pain starts to register. On the plus side, at this point he finally notices just who it is who holds him back with those strong arms: Jacob--the guy from marketing with the sexy, lopsided smile. Given the job of escorting Mark from the building, Jacob goes one step further, driving Mark to the hospital and then back home. This is where you start to see Mark's wry humour surface:
Jacob followed me up the walk and into the house. I hadn't realized in decking Xavier I was going to get a puppy. Punch the asshole, win a prize. Maybe I could sell tickets.

The central sex scene carries the same charge of testosterone-fuelled energy as the punch scene. This is by no means the touchy-feely, lovey-dovey sex you find in some m/m stories. The sex in Bonus is rough, demanding and hot as hell. If you enjoy the kind of erotica aimed at a gay male readership, you'll enjoy this. Mark tears at Jacob's clothing and bites him. In return, Jacob responds with aggressive enthusiasm and showers him with insults, calling Mark a "cock-sucking shit", among other choice phrases.

What really impressed me about the sex in this story, though, was the immersion in the moment. I was carried along, utterly believing in this scene because of all the real-world details that seep in. From Mark's struggles with his awkward plaster cast, to the banging of the kitchen cabinets, and all the other sensory details that infuse the description.

I've categorised this as erotica because it reads to me more like a typical erotica story than a romance. We hardly find out anything about the two leads beyond work and sex, but I didn't find I missed knowing more in this case as the story felt perfectly complete as it was. There is most definitely a happy ending--just not too mushy a one. Mark and Jacob make a great match, despite us only getting to see a very small slice of their life.

I can highly recommend Bonus to any readers who enjoy reading more rough and ready sex scenes, and who like their fictional male leads to act like men rather than the strange creatures that inhabit some m/m romance. The prose is supple and assured, and the structure well-thought out with the bookending office scenes. Bonus was a real pleasure to read both times, and I'll definitely pick it up in future when I'm in the mood for a short and sexy read. I eagerly await more stories from Liam Grey!
