Rate this book
An epic horror-action-adventure! Once there was a mighty bloodline of the Joestars. In the 1880s, Englishman Jonathan Joestar gave his life to defeat Dio, a megalomaniacal vampire. Now, 100 years later, Dio is back, and Jonathan's descendants must travel to Egypt to destroy their ancestral enemy once and for all.

The Arabian Nightmare

To eliminate the "Lovers" Stand within Joseph Joestar's body, Polnareff and Kakyoin shrink their Stands to microscopic size, for a fantastic voyage into Joseph Joestar's brain tissue! Then, the heroes cross the Arabian desert on camelback, braving searing heat by day and deadly dreams by night...

Memes in this volume:

3 page ORA warrants multiple gifs (this was such a satisfying beadown >:) )

Seeing Jotaro laugh was honestly one of the most disturbing things in all of Part 3

AND THEN THE SUN??? sometimes we need a little fun light stand user. all of them laughing?? its perfect. and now with death 13 - might be one of my favorite stands like HELLO. BABY STAND??? so good ... poor kakyoin tho.... everyone thinks he's crazy. also they saying joseph has gotten into all of these plane crashes but he is also 4-0 for SURVIVING them so......

3 estrellas.

As Jotaro keeps Steely Dan occupied, Kakyoin and Polnareff race against time to save Joseph from the Lovers Stand inside his brain - but their enemies just keep getting stranger, trapping them in the heat of a violent sun and threatening their sanity via the realm of dreams! Araki keeps the action bonkers and pace steady in this entertaining entry.

The fight with Lovers probably didn't need to be as long as it was. I've never cared about that episode of a show where the characters have to shrink down and go inside somebody's body. It didn't do anything for me in The Magic School Bus, Rick and Morty, or the wealth of other cartoons that trope has shown up in. It didn't do anything for me in Jojo. Sorry, but I did not care about little mini stands fighting with a fleshy background. Especially since any beatings the heroes take will be shrugged off in short order. From what I've heard this stand shrinking things never comes up again, so take that, Steely Dan.

What I did appreciate, however, was what was going on at normal size. Joseph being a goof-ass-joker is always a joy. And Jotaro coldly writing a list of things he's going to get revenge is one of my favorite moments. And then he just laughs when he's forced to take a beating, because that only means he's going to hurt Steely Dan even more.

If it had been anybody else from the crew who got infected, I'm sure he would've lost his cool and gotten a few digs in at their expense. But when grandpa Joseph is involved, there's no fucking around. It's only fitting that this encounter ends a 3 and a half page Ora Ora (the longest in all of Stardust Crusaders?). You don't hurt the older Joestars. You're gonna get your ass beat, and it's gonna be so satisfying.

The sun was good enough. I liked seeing the maps showing how far the lads have come. And I like seeing Joseph dick around with camels. I wish there were maybe a panel or two where the audience could figure the that the shadows were off before the gang does, but it's not a big deal. The whole thing is a bumper between meatier encounters. But I would argue that some downtime with the crew would have served that purpose better, rather than the non-stop conveyor belt of stand users. Don't get me wrong, the stand battle are clever and fun. But at this point a break would be appreciated. Give me some time with the crew having fun banter and experiencing the local culture. This stuff already happens in the margins of the battles. And it's clear that Araki has done his homework and is excited to share what he's found (even if he can come uncomfortably closer to caricatures). I'd love to get more time with that, rather than a short stand battle that most people aren't going to think twice about and will likely forget once something more memorable comes along.

Speaking of something coming along, death is a bit of a mixed bag for me. The stand user being a baby is pretty damn funny. But like the micro battle earlier, the dream stuff is not my bag. I just cannot buy that the gang won't believe Kakyoin. After all they've been through, where nothing is what it seems, it does not make sense that they would think Kakyoin is losing it. Especially since, to the best of my knowledge, Stardust Crusaders never has a false alarm for a stand user. It would be a unique and funny twist if Kakyoin were convinced that the baby was a stand user, only for something else to be going on.

At the very least, Kakyoin trying to figure things out single handedly has its moments. Getting to hear his inner monologue is welcome, since his character is the least established of the team.

Battle Tendency is an often forgotten part of JJBA. It may not have many of the series' usual elements, like Stands, but it has one of the strongest plot arcs overall. The cast of supporting characters is also one of the best.

I have the hardcover one which is still 1 volume (I think). I would add ALL the ones I have but that would take too long I think. So just this one.
