I’m from New Orleans, that’s N’awlins for those of you who speak the language. I grew up in the Riverbend, or Carrollton, for the old timers, but was a Quarter rat from the age of 11, taking 3 buses to go to art class on Burgundy Street at the Cabrini Doll Museum and NORD center. I attended University of New Orleans and have a BA in Fine Art. My mother worked at Tulane University, six blocks from our house and when we were kids my brother and I parked cars in our driveway for the Saints games at Tulane Stadium. We could get six cars down the drive, two on the front lawn, and two on the street and we only charged $2 a car. We made enough to buy a coupla roast beef po’boys at Comeaux’s on Hickory St. and a snowball over at Williams Snow Ball Stand. We lived 1/2 a block from a cemetery, but doesn’t everyone in N’awlins? We used to watch jazz funerals from our front porch.

Now, my family lives in Katy, Texas. I have a “real” job, a truly supportive and understanding husband, two incredible kids, and a slightly neurotic dog. We used to have a guinea pig, but the dog killed it. Did I say slightly?

My son is 15 and has Asperger’s Syndrome (high functioning Autism) and Crohn’s Disease, and is a constant lesson in patience, acceptance and managing expectations. He’s super smart, loves video games, fencing, movies, building with legos, and hanging around the house. Like me, he believes that it’s all about him. Sometimes, I wonder if I don’t have Asperger’s, too. Oh, and he’s very handsome.

My daughter, 13, is so creative it’s scary- she loves to paint, draw manga and anima, build dioramas with any box she can get her hands on, create worlds with legos and then make movies with them, sculpt people, animals and objects with those little twist ties from the grocery store, does pottery, and wants to be a lifeguard. And she’s smart, too. And
beautiful, inside and out.

I write for a few hours in the evenings and on weekends as much as I can, without neglecting my family. (That laughter you hear is my husband) I attend a critique group, and do whatever the kids are into at the time.

Tor by Lynn Lorenz
WereWolf Fight League, Book 1
3 Stars
Reviewed for www.heartsonfirereviews.com

Despite the warning in the blurb, this is not a dark and gritty read. The first chapter does have about two paragraph that were difficult and the rest of the book is pretty angst free.
as a matter of fact, it is quite fluffy in some portions of this book.

Tor's mate is raped and killed in front of him by an insane challenger and he loses his will to fight. No unmated weres will fight so his owner, Maddock, buys, Sky who is the most beautiful virgin sex slave that can be found and gives him to Tor with demands that he mate him. Maddock is in major debt and needs Tor back in the ring at all costs. Maddock even tells Sky that he will give him his freedom if Tor wind the championship. Sky and Tor quickly fall in love and the rest of the story is composed of Tor training and frequent sex scenes with a big fight at the end. With the exception of the beginning of the book, this is a very light read that is fairly entertaining.

This is a werewolf story with a slightly different plot, but having werewolves as professional fighters, somewhere in the future, actually makes a weird kind of sense. With the way sports are going, and professional wrestling is already fairly big in certain circles, I can see how ‘discovering’ werewolves might lead to them being used for ‘entertainment’. It is also a brutal story, right from the very start. This vision of the future is a very harsh world, reminding me of what Roman gladiators must have gone through, only worse. It is definitely not for the fainthearted.

Despite the violent tone of the blurb, this actually is NOT that dark. In fact the violent/rape scene is only on the first chapter, and pretty quick too, probably a couple of paragraph.

The rest of the story is pretty much sweet.

Sky is a virgin sex slave who has been given a deal for freedom. All he has to do is to make Tor, the werewolf fighter who lost his mate on a previous fight, to claim and mate Sky, and go back to the ring to fight.

So, after that first chapter, everything quickly turns into Tor claiming/mating Sky, and there's quite a number of sex, and not heavy on the angst, 'cause Sky quickly makes Tor care for him. Then, we have the end fight. Straightforward and nice.

This book was not as gritty as I was hoping for, based on the blurb, so I was a little disappointed. The first chapter sucked me in because I was distressed about the death of Tor's first mate Jin, even though we knew nothing about him. Tor's anguish over his loss (and witnessing his death) was palpable. But someone needs to explain to me why Tor's challenger Cosack was allowed to claim Jin in the first place. It was undisputed that weapons were illegal in a cage match, so when it became clear that Cosack stabbed Tor with a blade (thus gaining the advantage), the match should have been immediately forfeit. We learned later that Tor kept his title and Cosack was also sanctioned and banned from the league, so why would anyone have thought that Cosack had won the match and allow him to claim Jin as his prize? Even Tor and Jin seemed to accept Jin's fate and I just didn't get that. And why didn't Tor shift to heal himself and protest what Cosack had done before Cosack had a chance to defile and kill poor Jin? I guess I had a little trouble getting past all that. Sky was great to help Tor heal and they eventually made a great team, but I also thought Sky came across as a bit too immature and childish (you could tell he was only 18). It was at those times I again wondered about Tor's previous relationship with Jin (and how much better it probably was?) Anyhoo, Tor and Sky both came a long way, were good for each other in the end, and the final cage match held my interest. I'm not sure what new plots future books in this series will offer, but there are a few characters I wouldn't mind hearing more about.

I really enjoyed this different take on werewolves. In this authors world, the were's are cage fighters, the ones with mates are the defenders and the others are challengers. The defenders and their mates are in the ring and the defender fights to protect his mate from being taken by the challenger. It was really pretty exciting.

Tor is the reigning champion but hasn't fought in six months ever since his mate was killed in the ring. His owner buys him a very expensive, virgin slave boy, to convince him to mate and get back into the ring. Sky is not what Tor wanted but he is what he comes to crave. Sky is a little stubborn, unfamiliar with the cage fighting but determined to be the very best mate and partner that Tor has ever had.

This was a fun and very exciting story! I liked all the fighting scenes and these two were supremely hot together. I look forward to more in this world.

I completely enjoyed this one. Its a book unlike any others I've read and Lynn really latched on to something utterly amazing here that you won't be able to put down. Throughout the book all I could think about was how depressing it was what happened to Jin who was was brutally murdered right from the getgo and that event will remain with me for some time. Probably till I come across the next book that will take its place. I yank you not.

The fighting scenes were what was to be accepted consider its a caged fight. Its a no holds barred event so anything goes. I liked it. 5 kudos to Lynn on this one. I look forward to the next book in this what's hopefully going to be a series and what level she'll take it to next.

The beginning of this book sucked me in, but after that it turned out to be a very sweet story that didn't correspond much with the world being portrayed. There were also some aspects of this world that were left unexplained. The story concentrated mostly on the MC's relationship, and the plot suffered because of it.

This book had a great premise, but I didn't enjoy the way it was carried out.

Yeah, I really liked this story. I know the books I choose and enjoy and rate high are not generally within the mainstream of M/M Romance as it would appear with the M/M Romance group I am a member of, but I really make no apologies. I like what I like. I read for enjoyment. I enjoy some things more than others. And I generally really enjoy growly, protective alpha shifters.

Tor is one big, growly, protective alpha shifter and I really loved reading him. I really love when big powerful men dote on their smaller men.

Sky was just enough of a brat to be interesting but not so much of one (not much at all) to be annoying.

I'll acknowledge the other reviews I read where the was a little shocking, but I suppose the spoilers I'd read may have prepared me for it enough to not be shocked. Also, I'd already read Ms. Lorenz's Bayou Dreams, which, if I remember correctly, has a similar scene.

Since these shifters don't seem to experience the same bonding/claiming/insta-love/soulmates scheme that a lot of shifter stories employ, I did find that Tor's acceptance of Sky within a day of being introduced and after Tor's mate had been tragically killed in front of him six months earlier to take a very big leap into It's-in-the-script land. But there was a time issue within the story, so I'm willing to forgive/overlook/accept this as part of accepting the world the author presents.

What this all boils down to is I'd probably give this book a 4 or 4.5 taking the above concerns into account, but there was so much action that I thought was handled so very skillfully. I mean, I can hardly imagine choreographing some of those sparing/fight scenes in live-action much less to imagine them vividly enough to write them down in a way such that a reader can picture the action as it unfolds. Being so impressed (and really enjoying the smexin', too), I can't give this anything other than a five-star rating.

Now, I just need to stalk Ms. Lorenz to determine when Ashland is coming out!

This was a cute story about slaves and werewolves who fight to keep challengers from taking their claimed mates. Tor was a current champion fighter when his mate, Jin, was killed after a lost fight. In order to get To back into the ring, Tor's owner decides to buy another slave to be his mate, thus giving him a new reason to fight again.

Mates are not werewolves, and Tor's new potential mate, Sky, is an 18 year old trained, but virgin, sex slave. He is sweet and innocent, yet eager and willing to learn what it takes to be mate to a were. He learns quickly that he has much work to do to move beyond the shadow of Jin and show Tor that he can be a good mate.

I was a little disappointed in that I expected this to be a little more hardcore than it was. From the start, I had a hard time taking it serious, in that it just seemed a little cheesy and just too fluffy and light. I am not a huge fan of the endearment "little one," and it is used quite a bit in the beginning. Things smoothed out as the story went on though, and I ended up enjoying the story. There are a few other characters I'd like to know more about and look forward to seeing where this story is headed next.

In a world were there are cage matches where enslaved shifters fight for, or in defense of, a mate. Owners can make money hand over fist if they have a winning mated pair. But if the were losses the match, the challenger takes and claims the mate right there on national television. There are not may rules in the cage fight but when an insane challenger sneaks in a knife and stabs Tor and kills his mate, Tor looses everything good in his life. In a ploy to get Tor back in the ring, his owner buys the slave, Sky, to entice the were back into the ring.

Not your typical shifter story, with a different world setting that includes slaves, and some light BDSM coupled with a story about love, loss, and second chances. I found myself skipping ahead to see what would happen next. A very enjoyable read.

I should have read this one long ago! Live and learn.

I love stories with pain of all kinds (emotional - physical - doesn't matter). This one had it in spades. It opens quite brutally as someone notes in another review and it doesn't really let up. There are moments where it gets a little lighter, or sexier, but the threads underneath are quite dark and you'd be foolish not to understand that going in. Tor is someone who you cheer on and Sky certainly one you'd like to hug. Both are stronger than they think - and the ending was absolutely fitting though I certainly wished I knew what happened in the long run both for Tor and Sky and for Ashland from Ashland

2.5 rounded up to 3.
Interesting fantasy world-building of a gladiatorial slave culture that enslaves werewolves to battle in the 'cage' in defense of their mates. A little weak on logic at times. (What exactly are the rules to this 'sport'?) And a little heavy on the warrior/twink trope, but overall an o.k. read.
I did have an issue with one of the sex scenes, but that's just a personal squick. No sex with animals please - I don't care that he's a werewolf - wolf parts plus human parts equals yuck.

I really struggled to get into this one and I don't feel like my efforts were rewarded ... the story started with a bang and I thought I was going to get a gritty, meaty piece of writing but after the prologue, it petered out to tofu-esque meh-ness ... shallow and sophomoric with limited world or character building.

Tor was chosen for me as my October 2013 ‘Dusty Bookshelf Challenge’ over at the Paranormal Romance and Urban Fantasy Fanatics group. The story is told in third person through the eyes of both Tor and Sky.

I think there was a sex scene every 10-15 pages and because of that - no story - and you know too much sex! Having said that I liked Tor, but could not understand Sky at all. He was really whinny and frankly I hated him. Having said that I still might read the second one since I liked Ashland.

(This review may contain spoilers).

I liked this book more than I expected I would, since I fully expected it to just be a male/male erotic romance with very little plot.

This book was definitely graphic when it came to the romance scenes, but at the same time, there was a plot that made it easy to identify with the characters.

I felt that Sky and Tor were particularly well-written characters and I really felt for Tor at the beginning of the book, after what happened with Jin. It was really easy to empathise with Sky and his original desire to be free that later evolved into a desire to be with and belong fully to his mate.

I wasn't really sure what to make of the scenes where Tor was a wolf sexually with Sky, though. There was something that didn't seem quite right about scenes of a sexual nature between an animal and a human - and if I'm honest, I did kind of cringe when I read them. I also found quite a lot of the language to be very crude, though it probably would have been weird if the language had been really flowery. I don't know. But every time I see the word 'cum', there's a juvenile part of me that giggles. To me, that word doesn't sit right in what's meant to be an adult erotic romance.

I did like the hints of a relationship between Stoltz and Ashland. I'd like to see a book that focuses more on them. I'd also like to see more of the world and its history. Are all weres kept as slaves? How does it differ from out world?

I particularly liked the scene at the end of the book. There was a sense of equality there that I didn't see before in the relationship.

I'd definitely be interested in reading a sequel and more books set in this world.

Paranormal, Futuristic

Tor is a champion fighter in the Werewolf Fight League. Though to his master he is just a slave. When Tor’s mate is killed in a cage fight that proves exceptionally brutal Tor loses his will to fight ever again. His master, Marrack has other ideas on the subject.

Sky is a young sex slave that has been trained to please whoever buys him. Sky is very special in that he is still a virgin and the one that ultimately owns him is going to be very lucky.

Marrack buys Sky for Tor in the first step of his plan to get Tor back into the cage. As Marrack plan is set into motion Marrack has just one month to get Tor back in shape and ready for fighting again. Can Tor resist mating with Sky? Everything is depending on Tor – his reputation, Marrack’s money and Sky’s chance at freedom.

Tor just might find love again with Sky but then he might end up with a betrayal that he won’t be able to recover from.

This story mixes the ancient concept of gladiators and throws in ultimate fighters, werewolves and puts it into a futuristic world. It is a mix that makes for an amazing plot line that is sure to please readers of this genre. It is m/m and while that might not be for some readers those that do enjoy this genre will find themselves pulled into a story that will keep them turning the pages to find out what happens next. It will also have them wanting to read the next book in this series.

3.5 stars

I have to admit I approached this story with some trepidation. I am a fan of Lynn Lorenz. Her Rougaroux Bayou werewolves and her New Orleans stories are always found on my Must Read lists of recommendations. I normally shy away from fiction with a slave element, especially those with scenes of rape. But a series with werewolves fighting in a sort of gladiator werewolf fight league caught my interest and I just had to know how this author handled such a storyline.

Tor, the first in the series, left me with mixed opinions. I thought the idea of using the mixed martial arts fighting leagues in a werewolf story intriguing, especially if the setting included a Coliseum. Ancient Rome has always been a fount of inspiration for authors and using it as a basis for her world building works really well here. Other creative additions to her WWF series is the PETA modeled Werewolf Rights group fighting to outlaw slavery and the WWF. This is such an imaginative use of an animal rights organization when applied to werewolves that I am surprised that other authors have not thought of this (and if someone has, please let me know).

A little better than 3.5 Stars but not quite 4?

That opening scene was brutal, and because it was so horrifyingly well-done I think that the rest of the story felt a little...less? I don't know how to put it. Only that I think the length of this one did it a disservice; with a few more chapters where it takes more than a month for Tor to get fight-ready, where Sky's duties as "coach"/incentive then morph into him training some? Would make his actions in the ring during that official fight scene more believable. No way he had the strength or could understand the physics of what he planned (and succeeded at). Also, would have given Tor the time to actually get past Jin's death (not over it, Lynn did a good job with that aspect) while seeing Sky in a new light.

That said, I will give Book 2 a try because I am interested in the relationship between Ashland and Dan. The Master/Slave romance dynamic is a hard one to pull off well, and I'm eager to see how it unfolds.

Also, I made a GR Resolution to actually read more of the books I already own, and I've had these for 5 or 6 years! And hundreds more just waiting for me to get around to them. So, I'm hoping to make it a 1/1 ratio - for every newish one I read I have to read an older one...

The books warnings may have you thinking this is a dark book. Don't be put off by that if it worries you because it isn't. It is, in fact, really quite sweet (after the inital scene, which isn't long).

3 stars because the characters aren't fleshed out quite enough to get that absolute emotional connection I need, and the final fight is too coincidental, a longer book would have been required to make it work properly. However, the book's characters, primary and secondary, are enjoyable and I wanted to see them happy. Plus the sex scenes are well written and steamy.

If you like UFC style fighting as a backdrop, werewolfs, M/M and submissive butt virgins, then Tor has you covered. This book says WereWolf Fight League # 1, so I'm gathering it will be a series. If it is part of a series I would certainly read the next one as, overall, Tor was nice and easy to read. By the way, it would be remiss of me not to add - excellent cover.

3.5 and I enjoyed this more than I thought. The opening scene had me re-think my Bingo Book this round but glad I stuck with Tor. (side note I met Lynn Lorenz at GRL and I instantly liked her. You can see her love for what she does right on her face. She loves her stories, loves her characters and just loves to write etc. And she was respectful to her fans and that goes a long way with me :D)

As I said the story starts out brutal and heartbreaking with regards to Tor's mate Jin. But the main story was how Tor had to get a new mate and move on with Sky. Majority of the story, more than 75%, was sex but it worked. And what I found more impressive was the story took place solely b/w Tor and Sky. This is risky. It could get boring, fast, with only 2 characters, over and over again. But the author slowly showed their relationship evolve. Yes the plot was predictable but that didn't stop me from wanting to read to the end and witness their HEA.

I had the privilege of meeting Lynn Lorenz last month, and I thoroughly enjoyed talking with her. I was intrigued with the idea of a werewolf as a fighting slave, a gladiator of sorts. So, I purchased Tor. I wasn't disappointed.

In the beginning, we have Tor. He is a slave, his primary purpose is to fight. He is seriously injured and looses his mate in a rigged match. Next enters Sky, a sex slave, trained to serve in a different way. The two men are forced into a relationship neither one wants. In spite of the odds, the men fall in love. That's all I'm saying, at the risk of giving away too many spoilers.

It was a fun read. Werewolves are big, brutish men. Tor is blond and hairy, a totally hot man. Sky is portrayed as the weaker of the two, but he certainly has his own strengths. I liked the interchange between the two men.

Tor was the first story I've read by Lynn Lorenz, but it won't be my last.
