Anyone who loves rats (and I have nine pet ones) shouldn't read this short story about a couple who rent a cabin with the idea of resurrecting their marriage after the husband's silly and rather pathetic indiscretion.
His battle with the rat - and subsequent killing of the poor thing - is the means whereby he saves his marriage. I know I am prejudiced and for that reason wanted to see the rat win out and the idiot couple - who didn't deserve what they had until it was almost too late - fall in the marital soup.
Despite my personal feelings, I have given this story four stars because it is so well written by a writer whose other work I shall be looking into - as long as he doesn't kill any more literary animals!
I was drawn to this story because of the title. I love rats. Is there some irony in the title? Hmmm. It was OK but just didn't grab me in any special way.
